Why Melton Mowbray needed to be called ‘middle town’

  • We know that Melton Mowbray was especially important in Anglo-Saxon times. But why did it need to be called ‘Melton’ - the ‘middle settlement’? Could it be that it was established in competition to somewhere older? Perhaps even a long-established pre-conversion ritual site?
