    I went down the pickup change hole years ago 😂 Yes each change was slightly different and a lot of work and parts. Then a great player I know showed me his equaliser pedal and how he could dial in every tone in seconds that took me hours of rewiring to do the same thing. Lesson learned. Hi Landon, Mike here from just north of you in North Bay. I kind of did the same thing with my CV 60's Tele, but instead of a high end Fender pups I opted for the Lindy Fralin Blues Special with ObsidianWire controls. Night and day changes and I'm really happy with them. Also added some locking tuners and shielding in the cavities....

    Once you got to where I realized you were replacing literally everything I was left wondering why not just get an empty pickguard and fill that instead, leaving the original assembly completely intact as a functional unit. I'm lazy though - I do work hard but I won't do it until I have to lol

    • @picksalot1
      @picksalot1 11 місяців тому +3

      Yes, that's the way to go. Use a "Quick Connect" at the Jack, and a whole loaded Pickguard can be swapped out in minutes without any soldering. Then you've got two different flavors of the same guitar. 😎

    • @Bliggick
      @Bliggick 10 місяців тому +2

      I was thinking the same thing. Then you have the stock loaded pickguard to replace into the guitar if you wanted to resell the guitar as stock and keep your custom loaded pickguard as a separate unit.

    I dig the tone, it's a nice hybrid of single coil, P90 and PAF, and if they came stock on a strat I'd consider it a great big plus. I also dig how they look. Very cool. But I can't justify the price. As a strat player I'm in between classic and modern, but not obsessive. I know all sorts of tricks to get the tones I need without breaking the bank.

    • @norseman61
      @norseman61 11 місяців тому +1

      I'm with you. There are so many simple things a player can do to change the tone of their guitar that don't involve changing the pickups. Pickup heights, picking location, attack, etc. can often do more to the tone than a pickup change will. And apparently, a lot of people don't seem to realize that those little knob things on the guitar and amp can actually be used to change the tone.

    • @TheGhostGuitars
      @TheGhostGuitars 11 місяців тому +2

      I agree, I had planned in getting a set of CuNiFe to replace the original ceramics in my '92 Mex Std Strat, until I saw the 350$ price for them. Finally took a look at a bunch videos on these pups to hear how they'd sound.
      Sounds good, BUT, to be honest methink it's not worth 350$ to get that tone. I can get alnicos that sounds similar for ~100$ less from Seymour Duncan, and ye could pay less for other sets from cheaper sources like China for under $50 (but ye generally get what ye pay for if ye go THAT route).

    • @angusorvid8840
      @angusorvid8840 11 місяців тому

      @@norseman61 I always suggest working the tone knobs and amp settings first. I don't know what it is with modern players, but they seem to think those knobs are just decorative and would rather spend more money on crap they don't need. I'm old school. I once recorded an acoustic in a tiled bathroom because it had the right sound I was looking for in regard to that album, a very low budget demo. It sounded amazing, literally Floyd quality. I love reading about the recording process for my favorite classic rock albums. It's often so simple it's easy to overlook.

    From Leo: You did a great job, and it was a good demo. I do think the grounded metal trim bezel lowers the unwanted noise and changes the magnetic field. I played a lot with Jaguar pickups that have the metal teeth on them. Just curious, why not get a new pick guard and drop in the whole new assembly without scraping the old works? Opinion: CuNiFe has a great smooth mid-range, but muted highs.. the highs were crystal for the original SQ pickups. Overall I liked the new pickups.. but would I buy them.. I don't think so, they sound p-90-ish with distortion which I liked.. but I'd keep remembering those clear high on clean SQ. (Nice Radiohead and Pixies!! BTW)

  • @recordingbude8653
    @recordingbude8653 11 місяців тому +1

    The CuNiFe feel brighter with less low mids, which make the stock pickups sound a little washed out. Feel like the CuNiFe would be great for the John Mayer type of sound, but take a little more effort to dial in with overdrive as they are very bright and poky. One suggestion to your videos: since humans have a "listening buffer" of only a few seconds, they tend to forget what things sounded like, so it would actually be best to cut the video in such a way as to have the comparison for each pickup individually right after the other. I know, this is even more work in the cut stage, but hey, I'm sure it'd be worth it. ;)

    The Fender pups don't sound better to me, just louder, leading me to think the og pots are 250k and the new ones are 500k. Ergo you could get the same results by just upgrading the pots. Btw whaddya doing with the stock og pups?

    The best thing you can do to eliminate ground hum is go wireless. I've been playing single-coil pickups, mainly on teles plus a few strats along the way, for decades. Tried everything to combat hum, including copper shielding (useless, see Dylan's mythbusting video) and noise gates. Someone suggested going wireless so I bought an inexpensive rig (Swiff WS-70), and waa blown away to discover that it didn't just reduce hum, it completely eliminated it.

    • @1man1guitarletsgo
      @1man1guitarletsgo 10 місяців тому

      I shield all my electric guitars (including a CV 50s Strat) with aluminium foil, and it works very well. I tried copper but thought it altered the tone. I'll look for Dylan's video, but do you have a link?

    • @Andreas_Straub
      @Andreas_Straub 8 місяців тому +1

      If going wirelessly removes your hum problem, the root cause is a ground loop. There are filters for the mains cable to remove such a problem (like humno), or you find the second device causing the loop and use an audio cable with ground only connected at one side - depends on your setup.

    So the neck is 9.5k and the inductance is 3 H? That's quite a bit more than a vintage single coil which could be 5.5k and 2H.
    I think the point of these was to put them in humbuckers so that you wouldn't need a bar magnet.

    Well, at least the bridge pickup is only 10.5k. . . . . . . . . . . Which is still almost double that of a real Strat pickup. I'm pretty sure any of us who are familiar, probably dig the Wide Range pickups. However, the pickups in the Classic Vibe guitars aren't exactly sucky. I have a Classic Vibe 50's Tele & very much dig the pickups. Yeah yeah I know, "Think outside the Strat." Which of course I did myself A LONG time ago by putting a 10k rail pickup, in a Partscaster. But I still want the around 6.6k pickups in the other positions. Wait, position that is as I kinda Tele'd that guitar by removing the middle pickup & using a three way switch. Cunife huh? Question, who's hearing a 60 cycle hum over bass & drums?

      would still rather hear both clean, so can't really say if I care for the CNF as much as I'm supposed to or whatever. I would probably get the cheaper ones for an upgrade since they have those selections for about half the price that are likely better enough than Squier pickups that all have similar names to the top price offerings.

    I don’t get why you unsoldered the original pickups first. If you are replacing the pickups AND the tone stack wiring, why not just unsolder the bridge and cavity ground leads and then remove the original assembly in one piece? That way you just need to reattach the ground leads if you ever decide to switch it back to factory original.
