OKAY SO HERE’S A TEA ABOUT TAEMIN’S “CRIMINAL” because I believe this masterpiece should be known!!!!!!!!!
Criminal is based on STOCKHOLM SYNDROME.
There was a verse that says:
“I’ve been collared by you
It hurts so much that I can’t breathe,
But I’m in ecstasy”
It’s said that the lyrics were made based on STOCKHOLM SYNDROME. It’s where fear starts to make you feel positive emotions for a person keeping you in an extreme situation. This particularly happened in a bank robbery that occured in Stockholm, Sweden in 1973 where four employees were held hostage by robbers in a standoff with the police. Attachment formed between hostages and robbers. Hostages refused to testify against robbers and EVEN PROTECTED THEM. Swedish criminologist and psychiatrist Nils Bejerot named it STOCKHOLM SYNDROME.
“I know well that it’s bad for me,
that gaze and those movements
Though I try to escape you
Like I’m brainwashed, I nod along”
THE LYRICS FIT THE CONCEPT SO WELL!
Now, you can see there were 2 main characters in the MV portrayed by Taemin himself. The first one is the criminal who was chained by the police force. Second, the flower-like, innocent Taemin who has a scar on his nose which is the victim.
Another one, right before the chorus comes out, there was a phrase “Ruin me more” which is in Korean, the pronunciation can be also meant for “Run Away”. It’s like “Try running away if you think you can”.
When Taemin was recording the song, they agreed it would be better if it sounded ambiguous, so the phrase was INTENTIONAL. That’s how they recorded it.
The lyricist of “Criminal” said on an interview with MOMOE that in the process of fixing up the lyrics, Taemin led the opinion to make it a little more conceptual. So they narrowed down the theme to Stockholm Syndrome.
If you listen to the bridge of the song, you can hear pieces of news reports in Korean and English. When they created the guide music, you could hear that part only faintly. Taemin requested that he wanted lines to make it sound like a movie so the team wrote out all those lines and worked on it like a script of a film.
If we go back to the pre-chorus of the second verse:
“My heart torn open with scars
is already filled with your fingerprints
Then again, my hand holding onto yours that stabbed me isn’t clean either”
For that part, if the lyrics before were more like being dragged along even as you say no, from the pre-chorus of the second verse, it was more like becoming an accomplice in this criminal love. You perfectly assimilate into what’s going on. So, in a way, it’s both a confession of love and a confession of a crime.
Plus, in the choreography, Taemin suggested that his hands should be tied up to convey the story more to the audiences. I MEAN, THE TALENT THIS MAN HAS.

That explains the almost Thriller esque zombie movements with the broken wrists and awkward tugs. Which follows into the point of someone who is mentally under control of their captor. You mentioned MJ’s smooth criminal and I’d just like to point out that Taemin is considered the MJ of Kpop. You’ve seen him in SuperM. A lot of his solo dance parts in Jopping was very MJ-esque

Taemin is just one of those performers that leaves you speechless every time he steps on stage. He was born to be a performer and that is one of the reasons why he has become known as the Korean Michael Jackson. That is also why, as one of the top two dancers in the industry, he was made a member of SuperM. (Kai from EXO -- Taemin's best friend since they were trainees, who is also under SM Entertainment, as well as a member of SuperM -- is the other top dancer.) Taemin is an Idol of Idols and a legend of legends.
And the title of the industry's BEST dancer isn't just a fan's opinion but it's a widely agreed upon title bestowed on both Taemin and Kai by their peers and the industry as a whole. There is literally no one considered better than them.
Taemin is one of the most popular solo artists, as well as the youngest member of the legendary Kpop group SHINee. He debuted as a solo artist in 2014 and "Criminal" is part of his 3rd Korean solo album called Never Gonna Dance Again. It is part of a trilogy which started with his prologue "2 Kids," and continued with "Criminal" which is part of Act 1 of the album. And it was followed up by "Idea" which is part of Act 2 of the album and it brings the whole concept full circle.
As Taemin said in an interview: "The two acts put together tell a story. '2 Kids’ is about growing pains and depicts the story prior to the story in the album. You can think of '2 Kids' as a teaser before the movie called 'Never Gonna Dance Again.' Act 1 shows a new side of me. I think it’ll be something you’ve never seen in K-pop before. And Act 2 is the end-all-be-all. It’s the ultimate level of intensity. Never Gonna Dance Again’ was originally the name of the concept. Because it doesn’t make sense for me to stop dancing. But I wanted to give a sense of rebellion with the irony of the title.”
And just so you know, Taemin is not the criminal in the song. He is being held captive by the criminal who is the girl he is singing about (i.e. the pressure he feels under as a Kpop idol). The song is about living in a toxic relationship and being brainwashed by the girl to the point where you are suffering from stockholm syndrome and you have now fallen in love with the person (or thing -- i.e. his career) who is inflicting all the pain and suffering on him. Even though you are being abused by that person (possibly a metaphor for the pressure he is creating for himself with the need to always be the best in everything he does) you can't help but love them and allow them to continue to hurt you, etc.
This albums whole concept is a metaphor for his life and career. With every release from this album, the concept was designed to be darker then the last. In "2 Kids" he was emotionally and physically beating himself up with regrets and in "Criminal" he was living in a toxic relationship. And "Idea" takes the theme one step further, and says that even though it was my idea and my plan to live this life, nothing comes without a price, and because of that need for perfection, any chance of being average or living a regular life is pretty much dead. Taemin has sacrificed everything to become the magnificent and unique performer and person that we know him as today.
But there really is no one that pushes him or holds him to a higher standard then himself. Taemin has said that he really has never taken a true vacation since he was a trainee -- he started with SM Entertainment when he was around 11 years old -- and he doesn't know what to do if he isn't constantly working and training. The thing that he hates the most is when people assume he has had it easy because he is part of a big and powerful company and he is so naturally talented. As he has said, there has never been anything that has come easy to him and he has only gotten to where he is today because he has worked hard to accomplish everything. He is constantly pushing himself to become the best of the best in everything he does.
If you are impressed with Taemin's dancing, just wait until you see his dance practice video for "Criminal." You will be even more blown away. As I said, Taemin is on a whole other level.
Taemin's choreography is very much influenced by him. Although he has input in almost everything he does, he has choreographers that come up with the choreography for most of his dances and he then infuses it with his own ideas and style and makes it uniquely his. The way Taemin dances is just the way he moves. His movements are effortless. If you watch Taemin dance more, you will see that no matter who choreographs the dance, it will always be very Taemin-like. Many choreographers who have worked with him over the years have said that, with Taemin you can't help but allow him to move in whatever way his body takes him. Taemin is art in every sense of the word. :D
Taemin's style of dance can't be defined. As he has said, he has worked his entire career to create a style of dance that is unlike anything in the Kpop industry. And I would argue that that now extends to the entire industry of dance. Taemin started out as a self-taught popper and locker without any dance training, and, even then, as a trainee it was clear his skills as a dancer went far beyond the average dancer. Over the years, as you see with "Criminal," he has infused those popping and locking skills into his now more contemporary style of dance. But, when it comes to dancing, he can do it all and there is no one better at it than him.
Taemin's talents are one reason why SHINee are one of the top groups in the industry and why they have such legendary status. SHINee is made up of some of the absolute best singers, dancers and performers in the entire industry. With more than 12 years since their debut, they still command one of the top spots. When Taemin debuted in 2008 as part of SHINee he was only 14 years old and, yet, he was already known as one of the best dancers in the industry, and he has only gotten more magnificent over the years.
Now after 12 years Taemin is still one of the youngest in many Kpop circles (he is only 27) and, yet, he often has the most seniority and experience. He is so well respected that everyone looks up to him.
The funny thing is, although Taemin is ultra confident when on stage, when not performing his personality is the complete opposite. That's what makes him even more lovable and why he is so popular.
When on stage, Taemin can turn his sexy, sensual side up to 3,000 and he becomes the most powerful and magnificent performer that commands the stage. But the minute he step off the stage he becomes quiet and shy and he blushes when people compliment him for his looks or performance.
When not on stage, Taemin is known for being sort of innocent and kind of naive and a little ditsy, as only the maknae (youngest member) of a group can get away with -- he is 2 to 4 years younger than the rest of the SHINee members and he plays up being the baby when he is around them, and they pretty much will do anything he asks. He knows how to be cute when he wants something, but he hates it when someone asks him to be cute. LOL.
SHINee are a 5 member group that is known for their live vocals and amazing dancing. They are known as CD-quality singers because they sound just as good live, if not better, than they do recorded. SHINee always sings live. The ONLY thing they are not good at is lip syncing so they avoid it at all costs, so when you hear SHINee singing 95% of the time it will be live. They have trained their entire career to be able to sing live for 3+ hours straight and always sound flawless while performing extremely complex choreography the whole time. SHINee is the group that really set the standard when it comes to live performances. It's literally known as the SHINee standard and it's what all other groups work to reach.

Yassssss finally my boo Lee Taemin Jackson Jr!!!!! Ok so Taemin debuted in the five member group shinee at the age of fourteen in 2008. He was so young and even confessed that he didn’t believe he was ready to debut because his training period was so short. However, he literally learned so quickly and became one of the greatest singers in Kpop( in fact the King of Kpop). When he was little he used to watch and listen to MJ often which his still his inspiration to this day. However imma go back to my babies Shinee because he is still with them the group although he does a lot of solo things. Shinee made Kpop what it is today they really modernized the sound by adding there beautiful R&B sound. Fun Fact: Taemin has said that the reason he started dancing is because he watched MJ's Smooth Criminal and he was fascinated with the leaning move, so much so that he would practice it during recess 😂 he was 10 at the time! The song is supposed to represent the KPop entertainment industry and the bad practices, people,, etc he has come in contact with throughout his career but how he can't stop being an idol because he loves it so much.
For context, he debuted at 14 years old and has been an active idol for over a decade being the only idol to have a debut (group, solo, side group) in each of the last 3 generations of Kpop.
He is also really close friends with Kai from EXO, Jimin from BTS, Ravi from VIXX, Hawaii Sunghoon and Timothy from HOTSHOT. They are called the Padding Squad because Taemin gave them all custom padded jackets with a group created logo on them.
