I have actually been thinking about doing a video about this myself! I still may at some point. Great video and some interesting perspectives, even some that have me thinking maybe I should change some things for my credits. Namely, the Mantis/Rougarou scenario. I currently have only counted them as one credit, but your logic does hold some weight imo. I also don't count racing coasters as more than 1 credit in any case currently, but I can completely understand why some people do.
The one thing I don't agree with is the relocations. Currently haven't ridden a coaster in one park then another after relocation, but I do plan on going to King's Dominion and riding Dominator this year, though I did ride it at Geauga Lake. I however, do NOT plan on counting it as a new credit. I just don't feel like it is warranted, but to each their own. I respect your opinion and as you said, the most important things is having FUN, which a lot of enthusiasts seem to forget!!!!!

Think about Kings Island Racer. It's actually two, totally separate roller coaster structures that have turnarounds that go in opposite directions. Two different coasters. However, Kennywood Racer is one coaster structure & track with two lift hills. Grand National, Twisted Colossus & others, too.
Relocations I count once unless they've been completely changed, like Wild One. I had the pleasure of riding the Paragon Giant Coaster and it's so different (and way better) than Wild One that I count two different coasters.

Don’t know about rules 10 and 12 but can find me in the rest. My basic rule is that it has to be on RCDB, but of course this doesn’t account for most carnival rides, hence rule 10.

Yes! I agree with (almost) everything.
The only thing I don't think I'd count are Racing Coasters. The main reason being that, for example, Cedar Point is considered as having 17 coasters, but if Gemini counted as 2, they'd have 18.

If a park has a log flume ride with twin tracks, they don't brag about having two log flume rides but each track might have different layouts....making them both different "rides". Twin coaster tracks are one ride but two different ride experiences because the inside track is going to give a tighter ride on the inside turns.....making it a different experience. Maybe? LOL Now, I'm so confused ! ! ! ! ! ! !

I completely agree EXCEPT I can't get behind Skywarps counting. To me they're identical to Larson Loops with the powered system, but beyond that they're only one single element of a coaster on repeat. To me it counts just as much as a drop tower (which doesn't count).

Personally, I wouldn't consider a relocated coaster or a skyline as a new credit, but everything else I agree with.
Edit: My thoughts have changed. I would consider a skywarp as a credit. I still would not consider a relocated ride as a new credit, as it is still quite literally the same track. I would however consider the new Hulk a new credit, as it is completely different track and was completely rebuilt. I think of it as a clone.

  • @offrails
    @offrails 4 роки тому +2

I sometimes wonder if Skywarps were created just to troll enthusiasts
I don't count credits as much these days, but I use several rules
    - Relocations do not count (I've ridden Dominator and the Boomerang from Geauga Lake at their new homes). I count Olympia Looping as one credit.
    - Racers are one credit, though I make an effort to ride both sides (I have both sides of Grand National, but only one side of Colossus because it was only operating one)
    - Dueling coasters are two credits (Gwazi, Dueling Dragons, Lightning Racer)
    - Duel track, but separate, coasters count multiple times (Space Mountain and Primeval Whirl)
    - Water coasters are debatable. Log flumes do not count
    - Upgrades are debatable. I never rode Steel Phantom, but might have considered it a different credit from Phantom's Revenge. Mantis is one credit for me. Flipping the train backwards does not create a new credit.
    - Powered coasters do not count, but I will ride them anyway
    - Kiddie coasters do count, but I will not go out of my way to get the credit
    - Superman at Magic Mountain is debatable, though the general consensus is that it is a coaster and I would count it as a single credit.

I've been wanting to find someone that agrees with the 'racing rollercoasters, 2 credits' thing! I live in the UK and only go to one park a year (most often the same one so that helps a lot..) since I'm 13 and have no free will to travel any further than my school xD so my credit count is very small, either way, both tracks are a different coaster, no matter how similar they are, just like a clone!

Outside of rcdb.com but included on coaster-count.com are 1st gen Intamin freefall rides. I know some diehard enthusiasts may not include this, but I just think that before there was legitimate drop tower tech (which aren't coasters), Intamin had to use coaster tech (lift, coaster track, car and gravity) to create a drop coaster. It's no different than a Togo Ultratwister without the bunny hill and zero-g roll elements. It's just a top-hat element that uses an elevator lift where the drop is lying on your back instead of doing a 90-degree, downward facing drop. If the car was doing a 90-degree, downward facing drop after the lift, it would be on rcdb.com, I think.

My philosophy is if they're different tracks than it's a different credit. Gemini has 2 complete tracks so it's 2 tracks. Twisted colossus is 1 track so it's 1 credit. However mobius loops that go back to the station before riding the other side are 2 credits imo. But that technically means I believe the old hulk and new hulk at islands of adventure are 2 credits. Completely different ride. Just clone of one another in the same spot. Relocations are the same track so they're the same credit.

Now consider old woodies--they get retracked and rebuilt all the time, to the point where there's a "Ship of Theseus" situation where little or nothing of the original wood likely remains, definitely not the original track, though the layout may be the same. (Not in some cases, though.) Same credit or new credit?
The Yankee Cannonball at Canobie Lake Park is often described as a relocation of a 1930 coaster from Lakewood Park in Connecticut, but Lakewood's Giant Coaster (from evidence of old postcards) had an essentially completely different layout--they just reused the wood. So would that be a different credit? (It may be that no one with a credit on Lakewood's Giant Coaster is still alive, so this is a bit academic.)

Here's my opinion on each rule here:
    1. 1 Coaster = 1 credit
My thoughts: I don't think you'll find anyone who disagrees with this.
    My final opinion: I agree.
    2. Any seat only counts towards 1 credit
    My opinion: I agree.
    3. Each side of a racing/dueling coaster count as 1 credit.
    My opinion: I agree.
    4. Mobius coasters only count as 1 credit... unless its racer at Kennywood
My thoughts: I won't lie; I had to look up a POV of Racer at Kennywood to see how it operates. I was very surprised to find out that Racer is a mobius coaster in terms of layout but isn't operated like one.
My final opinion: I agree with mobius coasters being 1 credit. I think that I agree with Racer being 2 credits.
    5. Mountain coasters are roller coasters too!
    My opinion: I agree.
    6. Powered coasters count as a coaster credit
My thoughts: This is where things start getting a little iffy with me. I personally do consider powered coasters as roller coasters (I think). At the same time, as of right now, I have only been on one powered coaster, that of which I do not have on my credits list because it is not on RCDB. At the moment, my credits list goes off of RCDB standards, regardless of if I agree with it or not. (for anyone who's wondering, the one powered coaster that I've been on is "the high in the sky Seuss trolley train ride" at Universal's Islands of Adventure)
My final opinion: I agree that powered coasters are credits, but I personally don't put them on my list at the moment if it's not on RCDB.
    7. Larson loopers don't count as credits
    My opinion: I agree.
    8. Skywarps are roller coasters
My thoughts: I honestly don't know on this one. I would personally count them on my list only because they are on RCDB.
My final opinion: I don't know.
    9. Log flume/shoot the rapids rides are not roller coasters
    My opinion: I agree.
9.2. Water coasters like Journey to Atlantice are roller coasters
My opinion: I disagree. I have only been on the version at SeaWorld Orlando which is mostly a log flume with a roller coaster like element toward the end; ain't no way in hell that's a roller coaster. (I have it on my credits list only because it's on RCDB; this is the only ride that I've been on that RCDB says is a roller coaster and I disagree) I don't see how water coasters are any different from log flume/shoot the rapids rides, even with your reasoning.
    10. Relocated roller coaster count as a new credit
My thoughts: I have only been on one roller coaster that was relocated (to my knowledge) but I went on it after relocating and not before. That being said, I haven't needed to put that much thought into this, but I think that I agree. (for anyone who's wondering, the one relocated roller coaster that I've been on was (The) SandSerpent at Busch Gardens Tampa)
My final opinion: I think that I agree but am not 100% sure.
    11. Upgraded roller coasters count as a new credit
My thoughts: I don't know and I think that it might depend on how much is changed. I don't think that I would count a retracked roller coaster as a new credit. An RMCd roller coaster is undoubtably a new credit. I think that it would depend on how much was changed and maybe how obvious the change was.
My final opinion: I don't know but I think that it would depend on what was upgraded, how it was upgraded, and how much was upgraded.
    12. Transformed roller coasters count as a new credit
    My opinion: I agree.
    13. Each individual cloned coaster is its own credit
    My opinion: I agree.
    Sorry for the long comment.

-I'm mixed on powered coasters, but my position can be explained by if it has a clear gravity section, yes, if it doesn't, no. As a result, I do count many 2 story dark rides such as Wacky Shack at Waldameer, I do not count Mach mine trains such as Thunder Run.
-I used to agree entirely with your view on log flumes, then I rode the one at Seabreeze this summer. Fun fact: this was built in house and was the first log flume ever built to my understanding, it was an upgrade to The Old Mill from the 1920s in adding a drop. Because the drop is dry you're actually rolling down it, and you get a very coaster-esque pop of airtime on the drop. Coaster Force tweeted a diagram a few years ago where the million dollar question to determining credits is "does it feel like a coaster?", which I think is a good determanant. Most log flumes don't count but if they have a dry drop I'll probably count it.
-I'm on the 1 circut=1 credit view as far as racing coasters go

  • @DaanBruins
    @DaanBruins 2 роки тому

Do you consider BobKarts (not new generation) and alpine slides credits? I don't because they're not on RCDB. And what about Mr. Freeze turning backwards, do you consider it like Rougarou? Again, I don't consider it a new credit.

Such a subjective subject, almost not worth posting.
I personally would say I rode a coaster before and after a retrack, like Nemesis will be the same credit, and the pepsi max big one has a very different first drop than when it first opened, but it's not a new credit.
Also, Ikon is a credit whether you rode the Enso seats or not. They aren't seperate credits.
Also, the idea of padding credits.. not fooling anyone... you've either ridden a coaster or not.
All clones are a new credit, a moved coaster is a new credit.. but not specifically traveling coasters.
Also, I'd rather ride a cloned coaster at a new park than sod about with kiddie coasters.. we see some UA-camrs not riding an slc because it's like another, but then ride the tiniest baby coaster instead. What a waste! If you are going to shun the identical SLC, use that time on the biggest, best, newest coaster at the park instead of queuing for a 8ft high wacky worm!!

I suspect the reason some people don't count mountain coasters is that, if counted, they dominate all the height and length records, which seems wrong for people who equate "tallest" and "longest" with huge coasters.
I count powered coasters for one reason: it seems wrong to exclude the Dragon at Canobie Lake Park, which was my daughter's first cred and, easily, the coaster I have ridden the most times in my life since she would often want to ride it three or four times in a visit.
Racing coasters are one thing, but how about rides that are mirrored or duplicated simply for capacity, like Walt Disney World's Space Mountain (or the late Primeval Whirl)? Two credits or one?

  • @mynameiskrysta

I would say if it’s on a fully customizable track, it’s a credit, unless it’s very clearly a waterslide, so a log flume is a credit but a giant flume isn’t since there’s no variability and very little customisability, like a water _coaster_ has (unless there’s something significant about it like theming- escape from pompeii could be a credit but not any ol oval-shaped track with a drop). And a flat ride with a track (larson looper and imo the HQ ride) isn’t.
And a racing coaster depends on how different the track is, rolling thunder=credit but gemini ain’t because they’re the exact same experience, you would get a more varied experience just switching seats on the same car than riding in the other train

What about Demon Drop at Dorney Park? It definitely doesn't seem like a credit to me, but it looks like coaster-count.com would count it, just not under the strict count, like they do for water, powered, & alpine coasters. I plan on visiting this park this summer, and that would be a controversial one to count.

I'm 13 and are completely invested in rollercoasters, wondering how I can count credits without using memory or paying £3 for an app that counts them for me. I think it would be a fun pass time since a lot of things are going on with school ect. A powered "coaster" is not a roller coaster. It doesn't coast. By definition a roller coaster must coast the majority of it's ride. If you count powered "coasters" then it makes no sense to _not_ count Larson Loops.
If someone won't count a mountain coaster as a roller coaster because you can operate the brakes, then the scenic railways overseas that still have brake operators on the train aren't roller coasters either. Like Tivoli Gardens and Great Yarmouth.

I agree with most of these videos but I still do not understand why Larson Loops not roller coasters and Skywards are. From my perspective, Larson loops are powered coasters that have the simplest layout ever possible for something that goes upside down, and to me it appears that they do use gravity for part of the ride. As for log flumes and chute the chutes, I would also consider them credits because they have lift hills, a track, gravity powered drops, and wheels. Basically, anything that has a track and wheels that is not flat on the ground is a credit for me. This includes drop towers, (the free falll kinds, not the S&S Power Tower ones)

  • @StamfordBridge

I’m slightly surprised to see which “rules” people are objecting to most here. Almost all of these rules are squarely in the majority (I’m not weighing in on right or wrong - just saying they’re in the majority, so I wouldn’t expect objections so much). However, one rule here - Skywarps - is quite iffy, and my sense is that the enthusiast world is quite split over them. And one rule here - powered coasters - is to my experience a clear minority opinion, so I’m most surprised no one has mentioned this one yet.

    • @XscreamThrills

There's not that many powered coasters out there so maybe that's why no one mentions them.

    • @StamfordBridge
      @StamfordBridge 5 років тому +1

XscreamThrills Well, coasting via gravity seems to be one of the most common primary criteria most enthusiasts give, and once powered coasters are accepted, some would say that blurs the lines even with a lot of dark rides, like, say, the Alice in Wonderland ride at Disneyland.
As for me, I mostly avoid getting too worked up about this stuff and rely on coaster-count to do most of my classifying for me, lol.

I disagree with the relocated coasters one. It’s the exact same track In a different location - not a new credit IMO. Also entire retracks are new credits and the trains travel across entirely new track. However Rougarou/mantis is only 1 credit because the track is the same. All about the track IMO.

    • @Atm-nv9lz
      @Atm-nv9lz 5 років тому

Charlie Newbold the one place I kinda see relocated credits as a gray area would be relocated cloned coasters. If you consider cloned coasters credits, then what would make say a boomerang relocated from somewhere any less of a credit than a brand new boomerang. Because of that, I think making all relocations new credits is a better option.

    • @charlienewbold9809
      @charlienewbold9809 5 років тому

Atm2222 the relocated boomerang is still a credit; just not a new credit. I.e: if you rode that exact boomerang in its previous location, you wouldn’t gain an extra credit if you rode it in it’s new location. I don’t think the fact that it’s a clone makes much of a difference.

I've always liked the way you think, and that definitely continues here. I think you covered all bases, and explained yourself very well. I wondered about power coasters, since I don't hear too many opinions about them. I haven't ridden one, but plan to this year, so I wasn't sure if I should count it. Mantis to Rougarou was another curious one for me. Counting it as 2 puts me at 200 coasters even, with Twisted Colossus getting that honor. In my rankings, Mantis would be somewhere around # 80 for me, but Rougarou would probably be closer to # 130. That dramatic of a difference in experience made me think that I should count it as a new credit. I totally agree with your rule on mobius coasters. TC is 1 credit, Kennywood's Racer is 2.
I think I agree with all your rules except for # 10. I did Flashback/Boomerang at SFOT, and rode it again after it moved to St Louis. I didn't give myself an extra credit there, because the structure and train type are the exact same. By my logic there, riding both Hulks would be 2 credits, because it's a different structure. It's basically a clone, just simply in the same spot. But considering how many points of contention there are regarding credits, we did pretty good in how much we agree. And it's cool that our coaster counts are almost the same.

    • @XscreamThrills

@@XscreamThrills Fire in the Hole and Blazing Fury are credits specifically because they use gravity and momentum in the finale.
