Diamond crossings can be a source of running problems. I found that shorting was an issue. I was going to take mine out and reconfigure the track but I do love watching a locomotive trundle through them. In the end I completely isolated the crossing, and switched power according to the route. This fixed the issue, maybe not for everyone but works for. I'm DC and I love throwing switches. I even have manual frog polarity switches !
I like your look of 'what once was ' certainly brings an air of historical depth.

Neat! If you wanted to progress the work further, you could partially dismantle the Y-point, removing the switch rail that connected to the diamond. Having said that, there's a point further down the line from where I work which has had no use since the sidings it served were removed a good few years ago, but was still in situ recently...I suspect that it would cause more hassle to take it out with changes to interlocking, etc. Having a back story makes a huge difference to how you approach the layout, I know it's worked for me on Schinkendorf as well as my previous layouts.
