I finally played fear and hunger, in my first run i got quite far, i played darce, got passages of mahabre from a bookshelf, needle worm and greater blood magic, not too bad, wanted to quit so i went to crow mauler room to save, then before i left for the night i wanted to use passages for the funny, walked around a bit and didnt find anything, used the portal without the cube somehow, then i found scroll with black orb in a random shelf, killed lord of the flies first turn with black orb to the head and then got killed by some guard a bit later. truly a fear and hunger moment

Personally, with the advent of platforms like Steam, I think that single player games should have balance changes if possible. However, I also think that balance changes should be reserved for the most outstanding situations. Mischief of Rats is one of those. Situations where I'd call for a balance change are if something is clearly unintentional and exploitable, if something is too powerful to the point of trivializing the game (MoR changes the game from "high risk strategy" to "just spam rats"), and finally, if something is so weak that it sees absolutely no use and serves no purpose. The exception to those are when a developer puts in something as a joke and it being stupidly broken or ridiculously weak is the entire point.
I just want to see a game played the way it was intended by the developer to be played. It's fun when old games are broken and we can look back and laugh at them, and some unintended aspects occasionally get approved by the developers themselves, but if a developer feels like something unintended should be changed after release and they have the power to change it, then they should have the right to do so.

I think that buffs/nerfs have their rightful place in nearly all games nowadays, and even as far back as Quake having patches on floppy disks. I really enjoy when a game lets you get the best of both worlds, where there is a, "legacy xyz" setting that lets you toggle something that used to be broken but got patched out on or off.
That legacy thing seems a good compromise

It is almost impossible for a solo dev to balance a vast wealth of items and skills. Heck, Triple A studios struggle with that. There is always going to be an optimal way to play a game, that cannot be avoided. There are competitive fields that force you into abusing the 'meta' even in singleplayer games, such as speedrunning for example, but that's the case in every single game.
In contrast to games that were released to consoles without internet connectivity, games like F&H can be balanced with patches, yes. And I do think it is good thing to adjust the numbers a bit, in case some features are gamebreakingly powerful or entirely useless - but purposefully trying to keep balance between a majority of items and skills ultimately is a futile task and takes away precious time and work that could've been spent on expanding the game or fixing bugs instead of adjusting certain items so they don't feel as good as before. So yeah, that's my two cents.
I kinda disagree with speedrunning, cause that's a self imposed challenge, and eventually someone can solve the best stuff to pick for it, but for a normal run of the game I think a dev should focus on making evertything usable or, at least, keep the strong stuff for lategame such as idk getting access to a hexen without sleeping in termina in donnovan's house. That rewards people who get far into the game by not needing to sleep anymore to use the hexen

As someone who's played alot of roguelikes, balance changes absolutely have a place in single player games.
It all comes down to variety in gameplay imo. Funger's high rng, different characters and skill system heavily push for versatility of gameplay styles (at least in the early game). Its good gameplay design to reward this kind of experimentation and if "balance changes" positively affect player options, then they are fantastic. Otherwise you end up with frustration at what the player comes to percieve as "dud" progression paths when the rng dosent roll the specific way they see as the only option worth using.
a lot of roguelikes and deckbuilders ive played are very unbalanced and need changes even, most times the options are so bad only 1-2 paths in a class with 4 potential archetype can win in a max ascension run (or sometimes 1 path is so polarizing that u MUST pivot when u see it offered)
idk abt rpg that much, but imo funger needs these kinds of "broken" skills that sometimes trivializes the game since the game is designed this way (or im just bad at it)

My opinion on balance changes in single player games is that it's part of the natural process of testing that helps shape a game to better reflect the designer's vision. If something in the game isn't meeting that expectation I see little reason they shouldn't alter it. Does it make the game more or less fun? That really is down to the quality of the developer making those adjustments.

Buffs and nerfs are healthy for a game. It feels less fun if your too overpowered in the wrong way. I want to be strong because of my actions not because of a bug or oversight

You know there’s some bolt cutter in the woods just left of the train and before the shack that Tanaka stops at? Guaranteed spawn, they are hidden in a bush you can walk over click the bush 3 times while standing on it.
Didn’t actually know you could use keys to get into the city I always found 3-4 bolt cutters.
That bush is just a cheat, you can get infinite stuff from it

I feel like balance changes in a singleplayer game can be pretty valuable. It can keep a game interesting and fun without the need for self-imposed challenges or otherwise forcing oneself to ignore some crazy strategy because it will always effortlessly win. Assuming everything turns out fun and balanced in the end, of course.

Answer for the question: i think nerfs in a single player game can be a bit disappointing as its fun to be overpowered, and fun is the main goal of a video game. But its a nessicary evil, nerfs and buffs to a game helps keep it fresh and lets you try different playstyles, items etc. when you know that one thing in the game that guaranteed a win is gone, you'll either stop playing or find the next op item. But in saying that, there should always be a way to get op in a single player video for me personally, starting from nothing and becoming a god is a too much fun to be taken out of video games. P.s Great video, love the channel! Keep up the great work my guy ❤
Just to specify, imo nothing is wrong with stuff being very strong, especially in late game. But if this stuff is accessible even early on, that's where I think a change is needed, cause you can self impose to not use/take that thing, but you're nerfing yourself for that and aren't really playing the game anymore
@@frapollo94 Thats a very fair point. Its like getting a black knight weapon in dark souls 1 right away if youve played that game. Makes the bosses in the game trivial. I think it really depends on how OP the item is compared to when you get it. Like in early verisons of the binding of isaac, brimestone was basically a guaranteed win when you got it, so a nerf was nessicary. I guess it also depends on the player also, If the player wants a challenge or not.

Regarding balancing in single player games, imo it's up to the Dev's vision: one example is ultrakill, anytime one weapon reveals to be OP it is nerfed. This is done bc the dev wants you to use all the weapons available and he wants you to find the levels challenging (especially the "secret" ones).

I already played in other difficulties, but compared to the amount of times (and time) and played Maso mode, I really get used to every special mechanic of Maso mode.
