It's piece by piece as I understand it. For example, after finding horse tilting by either accident or looking at the code (I don't know how it was first found) they probably found the closest horse spawn, then wait until the spawn time, mug the hunter, and go flying into the distance.

Speedrunning is completely different. Whole communities come together to dissect the code and compile all the bugs known in order to optimize time as much as possible.

Olympic-level performance - reminds me of watching an Olympic slalom run, shaving off microseconds. I keep smiling and thinking, "I see what he did there." I also keep thinking, "Okay what the hell just happened?" I'm not motivated or probably physically/mentally talented enough to do speedrunning like this, but just like watching slalom runners, it's a pleasure to watch someone who is so amazingly fast. It also gives me ideas I might try out when I get bored with the regular game.
