Thanks for featuring Izel Native Plants, I’ve checked out the website and it looks like a great resource. My husband and I are focusing on planting natives at our place and I’m excited by the offerings Izel has.
I was excited as well but unfortunately, even though I was able to filer by my state, once I made my first selection I saw the disclaimer that they are unable to ship to the left coast. Looks like a great resource as long as you don't live in AZ, CA, CO, FL, ID, LA, MT, NM, NV, OR, TX, UT, WA or WY
This is a great topic. I find the plugs very useful for planting in my established woods because, as you note, there are many roots and, in my case, rocks. With adequate water many plug plants will grow fairly quickly. Plugs work very well for carex and ground covers. Sometimes I find that certain plants do better in some locations if I plant them as larger sizes especially if there is critter pressure. So, as with so many things gardening, you have to experiment a bit. Growing out in containers usually requires a lot of watering but you can also grow out plugs in raised beds or other more coddled garden beds. We have such great native plants in the Northeast. I am fighting lots of invasive weeds on my property but the other day I visited a spot that is a bit isolated and it was filled with asters, different types of goldenrods and native grasses -- truly glorious.
Izel is great. I ordered and planted about 700 plugs from them and Prairie Moon Nursery back in May. You can usually pick your shipping dates and the plugs are well packaged and protected
I got wild strawberries from Izel last year and they've been growing like gangbusters. Thanks for always helping me find native plant nurseries, Summer!
Great alternative for plants .. Other than what's available in big box stores. And the native plant will have a better chance of survival. Thanks for sharing this great information and resources. Can't wait to see the beds come together, just like the rest of your gardens.
I've planted 72 plug plants 12 varieties 6 of each - I paid about £12 for them from Thompson & Morgan - I'm in UK 🇬🇧 I've been using plugs for about 12 years now such a good way to fill out pots and then plant into the ground and of course much cheaper
Beautifull garden. Very well put together. I feel like every year you see a weed you should replace with a plug over and over until its an overgrown jungle of plants densely planted ontop of each other just flowing out.
Geraniums sure were the plants that covered ground the fastest here after planting them in spring :) Will split them up and replant / share next spring
Uploaded a quick video with the growth progress since april this year to my channel in case someone is interested to get an idea. Nothing else interesting to see, don't mean to plug anything but just wanted to share how they have been doing here (in The Netherlands, receiving full sun in the 2nd part of the afternoon until about 8o clock in the evening)
1. My compliments on your squatting technique (vs bending over, sitting, kneeling) while planting plugs. Many benefits to hip mobility, digestion, quad aesthetics and longevity correlations as well as practical considerations. 2. I really envy you for finding New Jersey Tea plugs from a large nursery-tea, beauty and nitrogen fixing. I try to support local growers as a principle but 80% of the time the plants don't grow well and/or are mislabelled vs the large nurseries. You'd think being local and smaller quality could be better. I hope this is just my problem. So I could only get 1 New Jersey Tea to grow from my local pot purchases. They are really hard (for me) to start from seed successfully stratification and all. Have you actually had the tea from the leaves? I hear about it all the time but have never talked to anyone living who has drunk the tea. 3. You mentioned exposing weed seeds while planting. You used your hori hori to create a hole by pulling up soil from within the hole. Given your nicely loose soil, what do you think about the technique of using a trowel: held in a fist pointing downward with concave side facing you, stabbing downwards into the soil, pulling towards you, dropping in the plug and pushing soil forward to secure plug.. Hole is created, but soil stratification (and weed seed exposure) may by less disturbed as most of the soil movement is horizontal rather than vertical. I've found it faster when doing hundreds of plugs~15s/plug. Are their downsides to this approach (assuming loose soil).?
Finally a place to buy plugs. Thank you! Also, I was wondering about the metal “protectors” you have around some plants. The rust blends in well. Are they just aged or did you do that to the metal? Again, thank you.😊
This is going to look Amazing! 🤩 Don't you wish we could fast forward?!😆 I bought plugs for the first time this year at a local native nursery.... I CAN just wait for the plant to grow! (This is always my approach)😄. I would hope nurseries all over would try this and see that people will buy natives and buy plugs, or 4"containers and we do with our beloved perennials. I'm disappointed in the lack of straight native species at local nurseries. And when i do find them, theyre $30 a gallon....well...I can't do $30 a plant. And that's coming from someone who appreciates all the benefits of natives. If we're trying to make a difference here, I think that needs to change. 💰 🙃
Great information! Does anyone know of an online nursery that sells non-natives as well? I've been working on a Piet Oudolf style garden with 70% natives - but have been having a hard time sourcing the non-natives.

Your restoration project is a huge inspiration, thank you!

Love the time-lapse!
Beautiful garden! planting my first garden in May with NorthCreek.. so stoked to create a happy habitat in MA
learned a few things, thanks!
Fall planting is the best for root development. I think you may be surprised by the growth of these plants next year.
This is a great video. I'm planning to grow about 500 plants this year in plug trays myself.
Thanks for the video. There's always something to learn. ❤
This was excellent and informative. I always wondered how to go about planting around mature trees. Gonna be OUTSTANDING!

Gosh this is going to be so beautiful!! I wish I had the talent to know how to create such a beautiful space!!
Thank you Ms. Summer. How does the normal gardener get ahold of plugs if their only sold wholesale? 🍁🍂🍁💚🙃
These are all sold to the homeowner. The nurseries typically only wholesale but Izel Plants consolidates the nurseries and sells direct to customer
Maybe consider starting an LTK channel with links to your plant resources and tools?
Would love that hori hori knife...
Your plugs are as big as the one-gallon pots I get out her in California!
Thanks for the great resource! Does anyone know of a resource similar to Izel for western states?
