Can you just imagine the amount of “sticky fingers” after the war? How many servicemen, officers and even normal citizens ended up filthy rich at the end of the war? Or even very well off. There was friggen train loads of gold and cash in country after country. There’s NO way it was all kept track of!

Many items that 'sprouted legs & walked off' 😉 during the war. Have popped up all over the place over the years. It's still going on to this very day.
A few years ago a valuable painting that was looted during the war was discovered. Hanging in the museum at the University of Utah. The man who donated after his death had 'acquired' it while he was serving in Germany.
After a close inspection it was discovered that it was on the list of stolen property. Wanted by the Monuments Men commission, & it was eventually returned to its rightful owners.

This is just me but if I was someone hiding gold with Germany falling down around me, I would have sealed it with rocks and dynamite and made sure it could not be found except by me, not just leave it at the bottom of a lake. The real treasure may be sealed away forever, those who knew its location took the secrets to their grave.

If you had read any books about the war, you’d have been able to spot the errors and hyperbole as easily as I did. People should never think that they’re learning anything about any subject from documentaries….there are many errors and a great deal of hyperbole in this episode to a disappointing degree. But I know this bc I _have_ been reading about this war, for 35 years. I watch videos like this when I can stand to in order to see historic footage, but I was so disgusted that I had to stop watching before 7 minutes ticked over.

The eagle and swastika was built into the floor and had to be covered as it could not be structurally removed without causing great harm to the building. We did some bunker hunting. It was amazing.

I was a Dutch soldier between Hamburg und Bremen. During large scale Nato excersizes, we were always told, men, we should be glad we can practice things we can't possibly do at home. Deutschland is a lot larger than the Netherlands. So, behave yourselves, please. When you know that even the Dutch had occupied a small part of Germany after WW2, though during the 80's that was pretty long ago, it is always good to know why I actually was a draft soldier in Germany. Think about that, why did those armies stay in Germany for so long? I believe the Americans have not even gone home today. No wonder Mr Putin is worried. The nuclear missiles, you know. Sure Putin is not exactly a saint, but do you see those conservative Russians do have a point? And I do not like a Second Cold War at all. No matter who is right or wrong, we all should stop the situation of super powers being afraid of each other. Build schools, not kasernes. Do you see why? Nobody really wants war!

In my home town, we got the problem of the national police school during WW2. These policemen were bloody fanatic and dangerous, if you had done something wrong. But still, a friend told me of an exception. People walking long distances, looking for some food, were supposed to be back at 8 in the evening. But there was a large German soldier, who was known to wave his hand: hurry, go home! He risked quite a bit, but my town knew, that one soldier would not report you to the police. Which is great. A friendly enemy soldier.

The SS gold is long gone they came back for it after the war and it's long gone. Now the smaller caches are gold or still out there. Meaning regular soldiers had this crated gold or had that and then tell anybody about it. Maybe they were killed forgot about where it was after they retreat it. But most of that gold was reused to rebuild Germany. There's so many videos in the 60s and 70s of waffen SS soldiers coming together celebrating their reunions. And they are with the regular army and tank commanders. Are you telling me all these guys didn't know where the gold was sure they did.

And why, one might reasonably ask, would the Nazis have needed the help of a simple farmer, one who could betray their secrets?

      @itwasagoodideaatthetime7980 Рік тому +5

Yes, they would have need it. Besides being difficult terrain to get about in. The Germans had *VERY* little gasoline/petrol available to them at this stage of the war.
They also needed not only their animals & farm carts. But their physical aid as well. Boxes of gold aren't light, & its a *LOT* easier to hide. It if you have extra muscles to move it about.
& they also could have relied upon the near fanatical loyalty of most these people. This was the ' beating heartland' of Hitler's political support amongst the German civilians.

They should have asked the Norwegian resistance for advise, fighting in the mountains. I bet the Allies did. I remember a Norwegian man telling me, new German troops travelling north were ambushed, a fact that not everybody knows. Seeing those valleys, you realise the German army didn't stand a chance, and there was no safe alternative route either. It was hurrying and hoping for the best. Oops.
And another example of fighting and mountains is Afghanistan. There is a UA-cam video on British troops going home and they only had to cross an Afghan valley. Well, they were slaughtered. Lesson, the Afghan mountain people is a people of warriors. They never give up. Enemies simply do not pass their valleys. Mountains are a dangerous place for armies. Better remember that, when you are a general or a soldier.

Do you even know when Norway was liberated?? For your information, the German troops occupying Norway capitulated without a struggle after the unconditional surrender in May 1945. So how were the Allies to get training from Norwegian resistance fighters?? Not to mention that the hyperbole and stretching of the truth in this episode is truly ridiculous!

You conspicuously avoid mentioning the name of this "secret fortress" (unless it's "Schwatz" or the like, at 7:40, but I can't find any fort of that name) - is this because the place is still kept under wraps and people are discouraged from looking at it, by the Austrian authorities? Berchtesgaden is the most famous of these fortified places of course, but it's clearly not the one featured here.

    • @Vague101

Thought the same thing. Read articles saying it was all propaganda by the nazis others say it was a plan but they didn’t have enough resources to go through with it which would explain why there’s no photos of this “fortress”
