    I tried to tell people Blizzard was tricking investors with OWL, there is no way the viewership could justify a 20 million buy in. Those hundreds of millions are never being seen again. Fanboys are in absolute denial to this day about the state of the game, casually and as an Esport.

    I've been playing Blizzard games since the original Warcraft and I have observed that Blizzard is amazing at making games, but terrible at balancing them. They are so focused on maintaining control over everything that they slowly suck the fun out of their games over time, Overwatch just being the most recent example.

    As an Overwatch fan, also of Overwatch eSports fan, I can only agree with that guy. Even though I really enjoying watching pro play, I dont mind all the things going on, because I know the game. But I acn see that it is too chaotic for some spectators. I also agree that too many changes are done to the game. But on the other hand, you cannot deny that Blizzard really makes a big effort in polishing their game and nurture their community

      Everything he said has actually been known by anyone who's played around the time Starcraft 2 dropped in popularity.
      After Starcraft 2 failed as an esport, everyone could see that Blizzard was a mess. Lewis isn't wise or a messiah. Everything he's said is common knowledge.
      HOWEVER, what Lewis said is very negative and there is a reason why Blizzard is stepping in on Overwatch early on. Hearthstone, Starcraft 1/BW were massive successes because of their appeal to a casual audience and their decision to make the game fun as Lewis mentioned. SC2 was designed as an esport and was difficult on purpose which made the game fail miserably.
      Overwatch, however, was designed with the same viewpoint as Hearthstone and SC1/BW. And it succeeded. Massively. 300k-700k viewers for Atlantic Showdown and gamescom and earlier tournaments.
      However, Blizzard was burned in the past. By letting SC1/BW and Hearthstone grow organically, third party tournament organizers took a hold of the scene and prevented Blizzard from entering it themselves. Example, Starcraft Brood War. KesPa, a Korean organization, basically owned all the tournaments in the SC:BW scene. Blizzard couldn't do anything because KesPa had such a monopoly over all tournaments in terms of experience, infrastructure, and fanbase.
      As a result, when Blizzard created SC2, they made the conscious decision to stop supporting SC:BW which killed the esport scene for the game and instead Blizzard promoted the living hell out of SC2. However, due to the terrible design choices I mentioned earlier, SC2 ended up failing. However, what we saw was Blizzard attempting to grab reins of the tournament scene before third party organizers could before them.
      Overwatch is essentially the same idea. It's a casual, fun game. These games made by Blizzard inevitably turn into esports. The earliest Overwatch tournaments just prove this. 300-700k viewers, 6 figure prize pools in the first few months of the game's life? Crazy stuff. However, because of their previous experiences, Blizzard basically decided to create the Overwatch League very early in the game's life to prevent third party organizers from taking control of the scene with a league or tournament of their own.
      And honestly, while restricting third party organizers was a fine idea, they did it too harshly in my opinion. There were no tournaments for extended periods of time and any tournaments that occurred were small scale with very little advertising. This led to Overwatch dropping in viewers until the recent Overwatch Contenders Season which had only 50k viewers.
      So was Blizzard's decision to make the League wise? Honestly. Yes. While Lewis is negative, I think all the pieces are in place. It's a game that casuals love. It's a game with diversity. It's a game that has a story and isn't just about clicking heads. And despite what Lewis says, there is carry potential in the game. Just look up Taimou highlight reels.
      Overwatch has all the pieces in place to succeed. Even despite Blizzard strangling the scene at the start, I still think Overwatch can succeed and will kick off. It's just too good of a game. There is only one problem. Spectating. Right now, spectating is a mess and the observer system is primitive. However, if Blizzard improve the spectating experience, I honestly believe Overwatch League can succeed.

      Never said something like this? But watching this 8:09 has shown me enough why he is a journalist(or whatever you might call it) and you are probably not. He just gave a perfect explanation for anybody who is not much into Blizzard or Esport.

      But his points have been rehashed by countless other analysts in the past whether financial advisors, random UA-camrs, market analysts, etc that it's been beaten to death.

    • @Diavolosss
      @Diavolosss 6 років тому

      +Kwanro I don't think it's as dramatic as you make it sound. OWL can still become a thing it just won't be as big as LoL/Dota. SC2/HoTS/Hearthstone still have esport scenes with big money in them, they just aren't as popular. SC2, HoTS, and even SC:BW matches can be viewed on TV if you live in Korea
      People make it sound like any esport that isn't one of the "big three" is a failure.

    I hope the spectator and competitive changes they're introducing at Blizzcon this weekend will be a step in the right direction. As it stands it's obviously a very risky esports push, albeit with some really compelling ideas. As the teams and their rosters are being revealed, I'm starting to see excitement build within the OW community, which is at least a positive sign.
    I have no doubt that they'll be able to attract Overwatch players to view the events, especially if they take advantage of Twitch integration and also use tournaments as a platform for community outreach (I'm talking debuting new animated shorts, making announcements, etc.) but converting a casual audience to an esports viewing audience, and attracting new viewers, will be harder.
    For as much as I want the League to succeed, I can't help but think that all that money would have been better invested in transmedia storytelling to help build the brand. A Netflix animated series, comics and novels, merchandise. The IP has massive mainstream appeal and a passionate fanbase, but for many of its fans the passion is centered on the world and characters far more than the gameplay.

    Reading some of the comments here is just fantastic, this is an explanation about how Blizzard handles their games when it comes to eSports. Not the overall development of their games, stop judging their ability to make a great game based on what their reputation is in eSports lol. Just think how much success they had with WoW, Diablo, Heartstone, Starcraft and even Overwatch. Easily in the top 10 most played and successful multi-player based games of all time. Most of the kids watching this don't even know how legendary these games are because it was before their time

    Having just recently seen the world cup, I know I would watch the OWL as an overwatch player. I'm gold/plat range, which I think would qualify as an "average" player. I just find most of the complaints leveled against OW to be in the category of "yeah I can see your point, but you've blown it so far out of proportion I can't take you seriously anymore."
    If you aren't interested in OW or the OWL, that's perfectly fine. I don't care about LoL or Dota in the slightest but they can still be great eSport. I enjoyed and will continue to enjoy the direction Blizzard is going with OW both as a player and spectator, dare I say slightly excited for it. Surprised to see that's the minority opinion (at least here).

    I don't exactly know what happened between Richard and Blizzard, and why they hate(?) him, but his points are sound. As an Overwatch fan - and someone who also follows the pro scene - it's clear to me he knows what he's talking about. Everything he brought up - well, we've all been complaining about the same stuff. It's especially true what he said about the actual game having issues itself, not just the esports part. They're focusing so hard on esports when they have so many other things they should be worrying about, like hero balance, SR system, Mercy, etc. And yeah, we all couldn't believe the amount of money they pumped into the Overwatch League. Not a great thing when viewership isn't that high. Also, Overwatch's popularity has been dropping in Korea, which is a bad sign. I don't know. Good luck to them I guess. I don't want it to fail, but I think they're being a little arrogant here.
    As for what Richard said about Overwatch being hard to follow for the casual viewer, that's definitely a problem. But I've always wondered about LoL's and DOTA's massive popularity with the casual viewer. I don't know anything about LoL and DOTA and when I watch a game, I don't understand a single damn thing. Would it not be similar to someone watching Overwatch, or am I alone in not understanding LoL, DOTA, or just MOBAs in general? I mean, compare a MOBA to CS:GO or something. It's easy to follow CS:GO, but a MOBA? People have no issues following that?

    Don't think he mentioned what wasn't already obvious, either way this league goes i'm sticking around because it's exciting to see how it turns out.
    Overwatch has a decent sized playerbase interested in competitive overwatch, but in my eyes does not have the capacity of competitive players to support a true E-Sport title, this behaviour Blizzard is taking is not healthy for the long run of Overwatch. IF the league fails a lot of good players that regular non professional players look up to will leave the game and the overall progression of player skill and competitiveness will decay inevitably, what happens then? Well a pre-existing healthy competitive scene gets dried out incredibly fast and the life span and longevity of a good fun title goes down hill in a neverending recession. Leading to not just Overwatch League failing but pre-established tournaments EG Contenders, APEX etc going out the window completely.
    But right now, hell money is fuelling competition and whether these capitalist companies make money or not it's going to be fun. Why should I give a fuck these guys aint on my investment portfolio.

You don't think he's right then ask yourself thsi how come when Jeff Kaplan sat in front of a fireplace doing nothing he had more viewership on twitch 39k than the contenders ever did? Blizzard make games to sell millions upon millions. Esports is based on hardcore niche games. You can make something but the "fans" will not be hardcore fans and they will jump into the next cool bandwagon. Counter strike and dota fans are not fans because the game is easy and rewarding for everybody. It's a sport and every sport is hardcore.

    While I largely agree with a lot of the warning signs Richard points out, I'd like to hear him elaborate on some things. Certain statements seemed really anecdotal, namely balance and player burnout. No one outside of Blizzard has numerical evidence to prove either of those things are really problems but I am absolutely willing to accept (based on evidence) that they are, and people anecdotally claiming there are sweeping balance issues happens in every MMO I play. And it's rarely the case that were are sweeping balance issues in these games. 5 million uninformed opinions don't mean jack shit.

      did you play overwatch at all? i did, since launch until release of sigma or whatever the hell his name was. the balance was all over the place and it was being shaken up every major update. just look at brigitte on release. me and all my friends (8+ stack of people) just burned out on the game because the content releases were super rare and every game felt the same, you always kept stalemating the same payload chokepoints and it got old

    I feel like he's at least wrong about one thing. I don't think Overwatch is too complicated for viewership nor do I think people would rather watch a basic gun/bullet shooter. I've never regularly watched esports before it and have no problem following along. I watched professional CS:GO once or twice late at night because I had nothing better to do and honestly it was just boring as fuck. Like obviously it took skill to aim as well as they did and know where to move or whatever but it wasn't interesting at all even when the crowd was going wild because some dude 1v3'd to win a round it did not look like a big deal to me. Overwatch is the only game I've watched the pros play and been impressed with skilled moves. He talks like there are no superstars in OW that can just run through an enemy team when there very clearly are those kinds of players. The differences in strategy that you see with different comps and different maps makes it so much more interesting. I've never see LoL pro games because I don't play MOBAs but I'm assuming that's part of the reason people watch those tournaments as well. I don't see any reason why class based shooters are at a disadvantage just because there takes greater thought to understand what is happening. I don't know the economic side of it, he's probably right about the over investing tbh. But I still think it will draw new people into the viewership.

    • @kylehallman8183
      @kylehallman8183 6 років тому +1

      It's because at the most basic level, CSGO, CoD, BF1 ect all are really self explanatory. You watch a guy, with a gun, he shoots people, the match objectives are very clear the screen tells you all the information and one player can change a game.
      OW is super colorful so as a player it's great and easy to figure out what's going on. It's a fun game to play, but the skill ceiling is obscenely low, that already makes it a bit boring, obviously watching DSPstanky and Seagull is always entertaining, but thats a couple players out of how many? Do you really want to watch high level Dva play? Does anyone who doesnt know the ins and outs of the game at a high level really understand the small decisions being made by a good reinhardt?
      Now obviously good players are better than bad ones, but when you compare the skill of OW pros, it's not so far off as say, someone whos fucking outstanding at CSGO vs some guys in Nova4 (basically the ecquivalent of low plat in OW).

    • @thekillers1stfan
      @thekillers1stfan 6 років тому +1

      Skill sets aren't transferable across Overwatch and CSGO but that doesn't necessarily mean less skill to me. What exactly are you counting as skill? Just aim? if so then yes, there are a number of usable Overwatch characters that require very little aim but if you consider how team reliant it is it also takes a greater level of communication and planning, even when just considering which characters to use on which maps.

    • @FortWhenTeaThyme

      You're trying to judge CS:GO after seeing it "once or twice". Of course you're going to fail to see how strategic it is. It isn't that hard to understand, but the four main grenade types add a huge strategic element to the game. Communication is also extremely important, probably moreso than any other shooter because of how absurdly dangerous it is to be out of position.

    I don't want to falsely inflate my ego by thinking I'm 'better than the average viewer,' but OW is actually easy to follow after watching it a bit. Now, the fact that it takes a few games to get used to it is a problem, but I think Richard here is kind of insulting 'casual' viewers. I do think it's valid to see it like that when considering those who don't play the game, but the bottom line is this: people can get used to watching it, and at the highest level it is quite enjoyable.
    Just my opinion, though. The rest of his talk on forcing and huge investments is a concern many people share.

High skill heroes mixed with low skill heroes, terrible balance, atrocious spectator esport (for which the production is also responsible because they use the camera angles all wrong and the casters are often incompetent), massive meta changes every 2 weeks kill any stability, one tricks everywhere, inconsistent mmr, no scoreboard or minimap, outdated engine and hit registration...everything about the game is just...bad. All it's been from the start is marketing gimmick after marketing gimmick like "hurr durr tracer is gay", but they never took the time to listen to the community or the experts in the esports field, to make something that will last.

  • @imago_deon
    @imago_deon 6 років тому

    Interesting points. My two cents:
    I think the hero design decisions aren't as bad he makes it sounds, especially now that some characters are getting re-works that increase their skill ceiling (Mercy, D.va and Roadhog come to mind). As far as I know, top players still get an opportunity to shine. An important caveat is that 'skill' in OW does not only translate to how many kills you get. Perceived 'low-skill' heroes don't get that much use on the higher levels anyway, unless their players actually use them with skill.
    The overall viewing experience is Overwatch's trickiest problem to solve. Once they figure that out, I don't think viewers will have a hard time figuring out what's going on. If your average MOBA viewer knows enough of what's happening on the screen to know what's going on, my guess is they won't suffer from information overload watching OW. That is as long as Blizzard nails the spectator experience.
    As for the cost of buying-in to the league, is high and concerning.

    I think you could definitely argue that LoL's esports scene was very forced. Riot was a small company at the time, but as a player I remember being bombarded constantly with links to go watch the tournaments, and honestly its probably the only reason me or my friends ever thought to start watching. While I'm very skeptical about OWL, people already claiming that it already crashed and burned while it hasn't even started yet is BS! The guy in the video has interesting points but his perspective is downright too negative and subjective to be honest.
    The patch updates aren't that quick that players don't get accustomed to them, he's exaggerating!
    It's not an issue about Multiclass shooters being bad for E-sports but the amount of visual noise Overwatch has that affects it tournament viewership, which can be improved, it's not impossible. TF2 had a pro-scene, it's just that the updates were far too long in between and Valve didn't bother with it much.
    He keeps saying that the different guns and abilities will confuse the casual audience, but let's be real here, a casual audience can get confused watching MOBA tournaments as well if they don't know what's going on and MOBAS are much more complicated than Overwatch, yet they are successful. It's not about simplicity of game mechanics! E-sports scenes like CSGO, LOL, and DOTA thrived because they had a following and a considerable amount of hardcore fanbase and they are much more hardcore games compared to Overwatch.
    Overwatch has very serious balance issues right now, but let's not pretend that LOL didn't have the same problems at the beginning, and LOL is one of the biggest, if not the biggest E-sports right now.
    The amount of money being poured into OWL is scary and financially risky but if nothing else, this amount of money will surely make them think carefully about their actions. Not to mention, Blizzard is not new to the E-sports scene. Yeah, they had accidental hits in SC1 and Hearthstone, and yeah, they mishandled SC2, but come on! Blizzard is a company who had more games in E-sports than any other game company, do the people not think that that counts for anything here experience-wise? Nobody has ever successfully forced an E-sports scene before, but if there's any company that could do it, Blizzard is the most credible to take that challenge.
    Seriously, OWL hasn't even started yet, at least give it a chance ffs. I'm skeptical, but I'm not a hater.

Premier csgo tournaments get 200k views regularly even if they aren't majors whereas OW tournaments don't have numbers and have gotten less views over time (compare Apex s1 and s2). Also, it doesn't matter to RL that he's deep into csgo. He's deep into LoL, doesn't mean he doesn't objectively look at DotA. OW is a fun game, but unless you play it there's zero excitement. Viewers aren't stoked on whether a Genji can press Q or that a Mercy can press E.
    The whole game is built around playing as a team, so there aren't those clutch moments where you 1v6 a team and manage to capture the point at least not on the tournament level.
    In games like counter strike or rocket league all players are equal in terms of what their in game character can achieve therefore there's a chance to win a 1v5 or a 1v3. So it's very important to have that individual skill, in OW it's less pronounced because every hero has different capabilities.
    The only potential the game has is streaming, watching a single player isn't as confusing as watching the game from all perspectives. And it definitely helps improving yourself, because you look at it, memorize it and you start doing the same in your games. While watching a teamfight will make you cry on how you will never be able to do that while solo queuing.

    When I look back on the glory days of Overwatch during Season 1, 2, and into Season 3. The game felt fast paced, it felt like there was a skill gap and it was fun. Fast forward to Season 6, after a plethora of ill advised hero changes and matchmaking rating changes, the game has been trending downwards for sometime. And when I look back at the glory days it becomes clear that Overwatch was a great title by ACCIDENT. The more Blizzard puts their hands on the game the worse it gets. They just stumbled into a competitive title. They never set out to make it competitive. Look at how there is no extended scoreboard in the game, look how hard it is to carry, look how effective low skill hero's are. Blizzard wanted to make this game fun and happy and we all holds and use team work to win :D
    cringe...
    They don't want superstar players. They have cultivated a community in this game that rejects ego's, rejects the idea of carrying teammates, rejects the idea that statistics imply a player is superior. example: "medals don't mean anything"

      They intentionally made it a competitive game the only made no extended scoreboard because they were afraid of people using stats to illogically support their own hypothesis about what works and whats good even though every character can't be judged by how many kills they get. I think the reason it is hard to carry is because of the division of labor they have forced onto the game by making many different roles, and then trying to make every character in those roles viable. Every player on a team (unless they are an incredibly superior dps) is just a single station of a factory belt. Not just one employee can build a car on their own...

      That's not true for a player trying to climb rankings alone, though. It's far easier to carry games and climb playing as DPS than playing as tank or healer. The roles are all vital to an effective team comp, but on a player level damage is clearly the carrying element and unlike DotA 2 and LoL, the DPS components of your team don't need to get farmed to deal damage.

      Only they did intend for this to be competitive.If I recall, they signed Montecristo to be a caster back when the game wasn't officially released. Whether this is being pushed by Activision or not, they are after all, the one's who funded development for Overwatch, one thing is for sure, Overwatch competitive is a fucking joke.

    230k views on the Overwatch World Cup semifinal and finale. I have no idea where he got 20k from even Contenders had 40k views and that’s Overwatch’s minor league
