Greetings from Madison, Wisconsin. My kitchen smells like pawpaws now because I grow them in my yard. There's so many this year I gave away a couple of bushels to friends and neighbors and ate 2 or 3 every day since September 15th! They are not native to this state but have proven to be easy to grow and a good choice for home gardeners. Two different varieties are required for cross pollination in order to produce fruit. Mine are grafted Shenandoah and Prolfic varieties, and I hand pollinate to ensure fruit. They are beautiful trees and the fruit is delicious!
I wonder if the Grubb that had the pit mine was related to the Grubbs that owned the Mt. Hope Estate and was connected somehow to the Cornwall Iron Furnace??? Interesting! Great hike and fabulous views.
When I hiked the MDT in May/June of this year, I also thought that this section was the prettiest on the trail. The hike up to Buzzards Roost is no joke with a pack, but the view is great. The mosquitoes were pretty bad in that last section down the hill. Great hike!
That's a happy Paw-paw Picker at 14:12! Good thing you didn't walk right onto those ground hornets! They are no fun! The bushed with red berries don't seem like Red Elderberries, because those plants have compound leaves, and yours in the video do not. The leaves seem more like one of the Viburnum species. It's smart for folks to see the past flood levels on a pole like that. More places need those sorts of markers to remind us all of the flood risks, especially those extreme floods.
I have read that Paw Paws spread by underground runners. Therefore, every Paw Paw one sees in a clump are related to the parent plant. In order for pollination to occur, pollinators need to encounter Paw Paw blossoms that are not related to each other.
Wow I live in the PNW, on the western side of the Cascade Mts. we have a lot of rain. My Uncle from Tennessee gave me a some “Buckeye” seeds. Do you ave any Buckeye trees or plants in the forests of PA? Sorry to say i have no idea what a Buckeye is. My uncle used to talk about Paw paws also.
My wife and I are loving this channel. We live in Lititz and this one is close to us. We'll probably go to Buzzards roost next weekend.
The dam was from the Marrietta Water Company. Gravity pushed the water across the river to Marrietta. The sound is the Alcoa plant across the river.
Quite a hike. 34:34 good view, clouds help.

Also a song recorded by Burl Ives called “Way Done Yonder In The Paw Paw patch”.
