- Is Jamaica safe? I ventured out for the first time in the cruise port of Montego Bay, Jamaica. I took a cruise ship excursion to the Rose Hall Great House and ended up a little scared. I also did some some shopping and had jerk chicken.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon in Montego Bay many years ago. As a kid we traveled to Jamaica often . My dad was a brewmaster and his best friend was Paul Geddes …… founder of Red Stripe. Paul was the first brewmaster on the Island. His dad and his friend, Eugene Desnoes actually started the brewery but were not trained as brewmasters. Thanks to Paul we were given our honeymoon as a wedding present. Just a fun fact from back in my day 😉
As a trini living in jamaica. I love hearing soca music in the ports while enjoying the Jamaican culture. One Caribbean
I can’t believe you never had a cup of blue Mountain Jamaican coffee! It is the best!😊
The best coffee ever
The best coffee ever 🇯🇲🧑🏾🍳
When I worked at Wal-Mart I had an assistant manager who was from Jamaica and said if it wasn’t for visiting family he wouldn’t leave the resorts because it wasn’t safe.
So happy to see your adventure in Jamaica. Rose Hall is the spookiest place I ever visited while on vacation. I took lots of pictures using a 35 ml camera (this was in the early 1990) and some of them didn't turn out. They were just bright light. It was very strange. I was fascinated by the architectural features of the plantation house, very beautiful mahogany wood framing. I have been to Jamaica 5 times. A very beautiful country and pleasant people. Generally safe to explore with organized tours during daytime, within tourist areas. Kingston is not recommended.
In Jamaica, my wife and I took the excursion to the Appleton Estates Rum place. It was a great trip! One of the best cruise excursions we've ever done.
Thank you for shining a nice light on Jamaica! They get such a bad rap especially when some places in the USA are so dangerous 😊
And I’m sure you avoid the exceptionally dangerous cities or neighborhoods in the US. Not a lot of tourists here on the south or west sides of Chicago.
@paulieprinceton4550 thinking more of NYC, LA and such. High tourist areas but equally as dangerous as almost any caribbean country.
@@sharonh2172there were 311 homocides in Jamica through April 2024. There were 327 in LA in all of 2023. We absolutely have our issues, but its still not the same. (Also, again, tourists are not going to those neighborhoods).
@gilded_lady I truly understand your point. I still believe americans have a false sense of security sometimes. I'm just saying that violent crimes in the US are not confined to bad neighborhoods. I live in the absolutely gorgeous, historic, and touristy city of Charleston Sc and a young man shot 9 people in a church in one of the most beautiful places in the city. People still get robbed on King St.... the most visited street in the city. Just saying is all.
U tell people this all the time. Got to Miami Dade, South Central, South side chi, Detroit , Baltimore ect ect and the crime and murder rates are fare worse then Jamaica. Really if u think about it the United States should have the US on a do not travel to list of they put Jamaica on it haha
Hi Tony, I went on this excursion in 2013 .. As I was coming down the steep steps from upstairs I tripped and fell , Being embarrassed I shouted who pushed me.. Got a good laugh and a lot of concern from the tour group making sure I was ok.. I was ok but I was a conversation from the other cruisers the rest of the day... I enjoyed this too. Enjoy your channel

🏝Montego Bay - first cruise. Ochios Rio- 2nd trip. Was 20 yrs. ago - beautiful but the poverty of the people made the "norm" of how they treat people outside of a tour unbearable. Kids would try to take the Coke out of my hand to recycle for $. There were 12 kids vying for my one can. The Falls there are spectacular. Seems like they now try to bring tours to areas that are controlled. Maybe I'll go back. Thanks for showing Tony
Jamaica is one of my favorites. I love the people and enjoy hanging out there
I'd want to see the Johnny Cash house!!! Had no idea he ever had a home there.
Jamaica the land of my birth. Thank You for shining a positive light on the island 😊
We had an amazing adventure in Jamaica many years ago. We hired a family who had a lot of recommendations, all I can remember is Pete, but we explored deep into the jungle, bought spices from a local guy, visited a really cool art commune in the top of the mountains. The vendors were VERY pushy and one of my bro- in- laws almost got pulled into the jungle ( which Pete adamantly warned us against). We found it so beautiful, sad, poverty stricken, obsessed with the male genitalia ( which is hysterical) . My hubs said nope! Never again. Too dangerous, but I would love to go to Rose Hall! I would face the danger for Rose Hall. I would just call Pete. His family was wonderful! I recommend him!
I really enjoyed this excursion too. Interesting stuff. Check your photos for any phenomenon 😃 Hope you didn't sign that book at the end 😂
The tour guides/bus drivers are always my favorites.
I love my daily dose of Tony!😊 Thanks for another fun and interesting video! You rock!❤🤗
Thanks Tony. We really enjoyed this video and thanks for taking us to Rose Hall. Very interesting!🛳️🏖️🛟🦩⚓️🥰
We went to Montego, but decided to go the Grand Palladium Resort nearby in Lucy Jamaica. You should try it once. Bought some day passes and had the best time ever! Congrats on 7 years on UA-cam! You inspired me to start my own cruising channel..
We visited Jamaica on a cruise in 2012 or 2013 (I don’t recall which year, exactly). Put in at Montego Bay and took an excursion to Ocho Rios and the Dunn River Falls, which was interesting. Drove past the Blue Mountain, the source of the famous Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee bean. Bought some while we were there. Our tour guide was wonderful. This is where we learned that there are no problems in Jamaica (“no problem, mann”) only “situations.” As for safety, to the best of myt knowledge, cruise ships do not put in at Kingston. I was in graduate school with someone from Kingston and she told me that we should not, under any circumstance, visit the Kingston area unless accompanied by someone like her, a personal friend who knows the area. Our experience on the Island was positive except for the gauntlet of shopping stalls at the exit from Dunn River Falls. They lined both sides of a very narrow, twisting pathway, and the vendors where really hawking their merchandise, like aggressively.
❤thanks for the tour of Jamaica. Always wanted to go there.
We did this excursion 10 years ago when we cruised to Jamaica. It was very interesting! I really enjoyed how you told the story Tony! Thanks!
Another great video.
Thanks Tony!
Good information! Your vids are always great, Tony. Thanks!
We spent our honeymoon in Montego Bay in 1998. It’s changed a lot since then.
What a great video ❤ I’m an Aussie , but my mum is Jamaican born and raised . I visited Jamaica with her 30 years ago and one place we went was Rose Hall! Did the tour and it was a highlight of my trip . So great to see it hasn’t changed
Spooky tour for sure!
I do enjoy a cold Red Stripe!
Thank you, Tony.
Appreciate getting a taste of your travels.
Thank you, Tony. This is very interesting.
Thanks for the cruise news and your views
I was waiting for this video from this port, thanks. Pretty neat; love the Johnny Cash connection. Have never been to Montego Bay, only to Ochio Rios.
Awesome cruise Tony, so many beautiful ports and great videos!
Hi Tony. Interesting story regarding the mansion. As always thank you for taking us along and all your hard work. ❤
Another great video. On our first ever cruise we stopped in Montego Bay and we did not feel safe. Glad to see this excursion and you felt safe there. We do still talk about the pride the driver had about the largest KFC (we are in Louisville).
This was such a great series of vlogs. Tremendously enjoyable.
Really enjoyed this beautiful video, Tony. They only let me give one thumbs up, so here’s another one. 👍🏻
That was a great cruise. Terrific ports of call ❤
Great video ❤❤❤❤
Thanks for the excursion video
I really enjoyed excurting with you. I’ve watched all of your port tours on this cruise and I think it’s a great addition to the channel. I hope you enjoyed doing them as much as we have enjoyed watching them. More, please. ❤😇
Reminds me of a song...hope to hear you sing ...Montego Bay....song of my youth. Beautiful video. Love spooky places.
We ported at Falmouth and could see Montego Bay in the distance. Thanks for the report. We are currently on sea day #5 and docking in Papeete, French Polynesia tomorrow. We're snorkeling two days here and one day in Moorea before 5 more sea days to Hawaii. Loving the Majestic Princess.
I love that you are doing these type of videos. I really appreciate your interesting and fun delivery. I am a “fluffy” person so I really enjoy seeing the trips of the ship that you do. Thanks Toni for all your hard work !
Many years ago I visited Rose Hall. There is a book that goes into the history which I read before I went on the tour. Loved it. Ralph Lauren used to own a home nearby. Other than that I really did not feel safe there. Maybe things have improved there. Glad you enjoyed it.
Enjoying your exploits as usual. How are you liking the Pride? I spent a week on the Costa Atlantica which was also a "Spirit Class" ship and I kind of liked the layout.
Great Vlog on Jamaica 🇯🇲
I have done the identical excursion on Jamaica and loved it .
Whoa! Spooky!! Looked like a nice excursion, Tony.
You sold me Tony!! I'm booking that tour next time I port in Montego Bay.
Thanks for review, I felt this was a great tour as well...I have heard of that place, Rose Hall. Scary history and "herstory" I suppose to be specific.
Some of the nicest people I've ever encountered ❤
My wife and I love going on ghost tours. We gave gone on them in New Orleans, Philly, Anchorage, San Francisco, Gettysburg, and other places. This makes me want to go to Rose Hall!
Love some Scotchies!! We were so sad that they closed their place at Falmouth.
I’ve been to Montego Bay. I loved it. We were on the Carnival Glory and did a buggy jeep tour through the jungle.
Love MoBay! I’ve been there more times than I can count. I’ve stayed in resorts, hotels, rental apartments downtown on the Strip and in the more residential areas. I’ve never felt anything but welcome and made some good friends there who took me to places tourists don’t normally get to see.
And all of these trips were as a solo traveller.
Yes like anywhere else in the world, you must be aware of your surroundings, and avoid some situations; however I never felt unsafe, which is not something I can say about some North American cities!
I've been to Jamaica at least a dozen times. Twice by cruise ship. It's one of my favorite places to go. Beautiful country and people.
Jamaica is the best Island. Big up from a Jamaican in Switzerland 🇯🇲🇨🇭🧑🏾🍳
We went to Montego Bay on Carnival Dream in 2018. We booked a resort for a day at the Hilton Rose Hall and it was fantastic.
I was just in Jamaica and the people were so friendly.
Jamaica is beautiful. If more Americans knew their own history, they'd know Jamaica was a major port of the 'Middle Passage' during slavery, and pretty much any of the large properties, mansions, or plantations from the 17 and 1800's were part of that history tied to the US.
Went to Rose Hall and the same shopping place last week on MSC. Did the tour guide sing the song about Ann at her grave? That was a great tour, and I had a lot of fun. My first time in Jamaca too.
We enjoyed this same Rose Hall excursion back in 2016 when we stopped in Falmouth Jamaica. The Rose Hall estate looks the same as it did back then. We also stopped at the same shopping center. This is where we found Red Stripe Lite - which I thought was one of the best beers I’ve ever had. We’ve yet to find Red Stripe Lite anywhere other than Jamaica. Apparently, they don’t export it. I would welcome the opportunity to go back there on another cruise.
I absolutely love Scottchies!!
I've never been to Montego Bay, however, in 2020 I went to Ocho Rios and did two excursions and both seemed fairly safe. Private Neighborhood Beach our Tour Guide had access to and Dunns River Falls.
I've been to Jamaica quite a few times. Montego Bay, Ocho Río and Runaway Bay. Dunns River Falls was fun. Also did a real good zip line excursion. It's a shame that it's become so dangerous. I enjoyed my travels there.
I would love to visit Rose Hall. It plays a big part in my favorite book series.
We’ve done the Martha Brae river raft ride x 2,,, anybody else? So fun!
/yes I was also in Montego Bay ages ago and saw the great house. I also went to Dunns river falls, very beautiful
Good tour. We enjoyed it very much when we were in Montego Bay. Did you see the witch? Some have said she was in their pictures.
She isn't in my pictures so far. :)
Rose Hall area is beautiful.Noticed you showed the Usain Bolt statue. Did you see it up close by any chance? We live in a gated community in Montego Bay for months amongst the friendliest locals.
If you go by car. The roads were the worst I have ever been on. Hurt my back when bus kept hitting Huge pot holes. Maybe better now.
I did visit Montego Bay decades ago and it was very safe
Love me some Mo Bay. Been there and Falmouth always took excursions and shopped in the secure area felt safe
We cruise out of Florida all the time I hope I get to meet you one day!!!!
Hi Tony.
I thank you for taking us along on your tours and excursions. You tell us the truth and don't sugarcoat anything. Did you ever stop at the port of Falmouth? Did you hear what a customs security agent did right before a ship left the pier?
What are your thoughts?
Liz from Orlando.
Thanks Tony for your honest review of Jamaica and glad you found it "cool." I was waiting for this review, no pressure! Lol. 😊
Of all the Caribbean islands, Jamaica is my favorite. I've been both cruising and traveling to the island for 31 years.
I feel, as anywhere in the world, you should be aware of your surroundings, but not scared. I would say Jamaica is basically safe when using good judgement.
Stay well. Stay happy. Peace.
Awesome 😊
I've never cruised to Jamaica, but I've been there twice
I love it there
Went to Tropican Bliss Beach a couple of years ago. It was a Great excursion.
My favorite excursion especially the vendors on Rose Hall property that sell carved mahogany.
We loved Rose Hall! Took lots of photos.
I love how she said at the start of the tour, "Today I am your mama, you are my babies" awww
Rose Hall was spooky but great tour went there b4 when stayed at resort on the island
Tony I am in Rose Hall Iberosal resort here in Montego Bay Jamaica with the Carnival Horizon!! We were supposed to visit Ocho Rios but the pier is broken. It would be cool to meet up. Whoop Whoop Loca Fam!!!
My husband and I enjoyed Jamaica. We felt safe. I was excited to hear soca in the background. Shout out Luda. Lol. Actually, it was Rupee. Tony, do you and Jenny like soca?
I would love to go there. People are very friendly in Jamaica. That’s been my experience.
That looked like a very nice tour. My wife & I do not get off the ships in Jamaica any more. We do not feel safe.
Ttlhinking you all keep your light that shines around you as the guiding light don't think they can get in.😇but thats my thoughts. ❤
We wen to MOBAY on our second cruise. We had planned on just walking around but the shore excursion folks told us "not in Jamaica". Booked tours seem to be the way to go. BTW, that was 21+ years ago 😄
We have been to Montego Bay several times. Went once to Rose Hall, a lot of the stories are fabricated but had a great time and would go back.
Cool excursion! What happened to your outro that you sing? Was kinda cool.
The news show outro? It's on the news shows.
I had a bad experience in Ocho Rios a few years ago. I went to explore the port & got swore at & berated by a guy because I wouldn't stop to look at what he was selling. Montego Bay looks way more chill!
Me too
The exact same thing happened to me in Paris. It can happen at any tourist place.
Many years ago we were supposed to go to Ocho Rios and we couldn’t go, so we end up in Montego Bay, there was nothing at the port, we took an excursion!
We weren't very impressed with Montego Bay the first and only time we've been. Probably should give it a second chance one of these days. It's hard to believe that big building next to the ship has so little inside of it.
We went back in '95. Climbed Dunns River Falls and visited a coffee plantation.
Have never visited Montego Bay, but our day in Ocho Rios was wonderful. Organized tour so we were able to avoid most of the aggressive vendors and still enjoy our day.
I hope you were able to try the Blue Mountain coffee😊
Yeah I've been really wanting to visit Jamaica but I've also heard about safety concerns from other people too
Loved Montego Bay 👍
I’ve been on that tour years ago and you’re right about that house, very creepy.
We had a very nice time our first visit to Jamaica on our Disney cruise last year. We went tubing and spent the rest of the day at a kind of waterpark area. While we were sitting around, we smelled the most amazing smell - they had started making jerk chicken right there on premises and between that and my first ever "rum punch" (is it supposed to be made with spice rum?) we had an amazing meal before returning to the ship. As an aside, I love festival, and peas and rice (we have some Caribbean food around where I live so I had had it before) and that was the most amazing jerk chicken I've ever had. But we had hear the State Department warnings about Jamaica and very nearly cancelled our shore excursion there because of that. I am very glad I didn't.
