I have never had a professional lesson & am just your every day chap attempting recipes to inspire you guys to try too. I upload 2 recipe videos per week, but some fun is had too on Sunday when it is Funday where anything goes....including giant foods, mini foods, taste testing foods sent from around the World, kitchen gadget testing and many more. Any requests for recipes / cool stuff you've seen let me know! I try my best to reply to as many comments as possible, but it is hard to as I am busy working on the next video, but please interact with eachother and be respectful :-) #barrylewis

    I did a lot of theatre productions growing up, and dry ice is what makes all that cool stage fog. I’m talking like oil drum sized containers with gigantic blocks of the stuff. Let me tell you, if you get a burn(yes, it’s so cold it burns) from it once and you’ll never let it happen again! I wish I’d known about fizzy food stuff back then, because I could usually take a ton of the leftover after each night’s show. Although, I did participate in a few dry ice explosion experiments, which were super fun!

    Be careful with too much dry ice in closed environments though, sadly CO2 in your lungs doesn't make you burp, it suffocates you. But as long as you have fresh air coming in through a window or something you should be fine.

      @@mrbarrylewis and Kaeltis, it's actually relatively safe to use CO2. The reason for that is that your body is highly sensitive to the presence of CO2 - in fact, the "I'm suffocating" feeling you get when you can't breathe IS caused by a high amount of CO2, not by a low amount of O2. Basically, it's incredibly difficult to die from CO2 since every cell in your brain will be screaming at you to get out of there as soon as possible. The same isn't true for CO (carbon monoxide). The body can't detect CO in any way, so it's very to die from it when it displaces the O2 from your lungs. You just pass out.

    Oh dry ice is so much fun. I bought my mom some ice cream through the mail last year and it came packed in dry ice. I've never seen how it acts in water so I dropped some in the sink with some water and the entire kitchen floor was covered in white vapor in 20 seconds. There's basins at our apartment complex and my dad took a couple of chunks and threw them in the water and it was covered in a fog. Just so fun.

      Don't want to spoil it but all you have to do is get a fire extinguisher (a carbon dioxide one) and "blast" it into a pillowcase. Home made dry ice

    • @DJAsHeRMusic
      @DJAsHeRMusic 6 років тому +4

      Becca Boys that's a super inefficient way of doing it. You can make liquid nitrogen out of just the air so maybe there is another way

    • @SomeGuyFromCrowd
      @SomeGuyFromCrowd 6 років тому +2

      It takes a huge amount of energy to get liquid nitrogen from air - you need to dramatically cool the air, which is very hard without specialized equipment.
      My undergrad chem lab used the carbon dioxide method, albeit with a giant tank instead of a fire extinguisher. It works because the liquid CO2 soaks up a ton of heat as it vaporizes, chilling some of it down enough to turn solid. You could certainly do better, but it'd take a ton of energy and a lot of time!

    We do this alot and there are a couple things to note: there should have been more insulation in the container dividing the dry ice from the fruit/food abd the food should never freeze. Ideally the insulation keeps the food from freezing, but it is still able to get the fizzy effect the dry ice imparts. When done in this manner, the fruit is always delicious. :)

    Just wanted to share a science tidbit with My Virgin Kitchen. When the solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) turns back into a gas without first becoming a liquid it is called sublimation. I have worked with dry ice many times ( I work at a science center) and another cool trick you can do with it in your kitchen is to take a glass of warm water and gently stir in a large spoonful of washing up liquid so it doesn't bubble up. As soon as you've mixed them well add in some dry ice. It will create bubbles full of carbon dioxide gas. When you scoop bubbles off the top and pop them it creates a very cool looking fog.

    Put a candy bar into the dry ice. It only takes a few hours for it to become rock hard. Be careful when eating it, there is a real danger of breaking a tooth. The best way is to slice the candy bar into pats as you would a stick of butter, then freeze them. Incredibly good on a hot summer day!

    i am reeeally sorry for being "that guy" but dry ice does not melt, it directly changes to CO2, it does not change to liquid (i.e melt
    ). The process of dry ice (solid) changing to CO2 (gas) is actually called sublimation

    Just a warning though, Barry. When dry Ice Sublimates it's releasing CO2, which can build up pressure in a properly sealed container. Honestly, having a bit of an escape for the gas it a good thing. Also, I think someone might have said this already? But proper ventilation is important when working with dry ice. Don't stick your head too deep in that cooler, there's no oxygen for you to breathe. These videos are cool. I love science, so this playlist should be an adventure.

    • @nooperspism
      @nooperspism 6 років тому

      Akela Nakamura Agreed! I was surprised to see all that tape on the original dry ice container. Shipping regulations require dry ice to have sufficient ventilation to avoid gas build up like Barry saw with the plastic wrap bubble.

    • @akelanakamura3305
      @akelanakamura3305 6 років тому

      I mean I guess I understand they were trying to force the carbon dioxide/fizz/whatever into the food but man I was totally expecting him to bring out a highly damaged cooler. The shipping container itself wasn't so tightly sealed tho. I'm sure the CO2 could've gotten out. I mean a shipping container with that one strip of tape on it really isn't going to be airtight. And I think that the CO2 could get out thru the styrofoam stuff. There might have been holes or ventilation in the lid that we just couldn't see on camera, ya know?

    Would have been cool to introduce the other people you had tasting, but it was real nice in general having more people to try things! I liked that segment a lot!
    Secondly, don't worry too much about the CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) suffocating you. Your body can cope with CO2 and you will know when you are inhaling too much of it, since CO2 levels help regulate your breathing and so on. CO (Carbon Monoxide) is the silent killer that you need to watch for, as your body does not react to CO and there is no easy way to tell when it is present.

    When dry ice melts, it doesnt turn to CO2. Its already CO2. Dry ice sublimates going straight from a solid to a gas you melt

    Dry ice doesn't melt. It sublemates. It goes from a solid to a gas without ever being a liquid.

    It’s expensive here in the states too...but that’s IF it’s allowed by local/federal laws. I would LOVE to know how to do “homemade dry ice”!

      Um,,, I don't think they even sell the equipment to make it.
      You'd have to isolate CO2, get it down to -70°C (-248 or something in F), and somehow get it to stay that way long enough to do anything with it.
      Not even a freezer in Antarctica would get that cold just by sitting around.

      Don't want to spoil it but all you have to do is get a fire extinguisher (a carbon dioxide one) and "blast" it into a pillowcase. Home made dry ice

    Dry ice sublimates. Also, you never want to actually seal a container with dry ice in it. Your cling film didn't do anything lol if it had, your cooler would have exploded.
