  • I love this song and personally believe it to be better than the studio version.
    Lyrics:
    Lonely are the free
'cause there ain't that many of them
they don't walk like you and me
They just tumble in the breeze
    lighter than a feather
    all together, separately
    That's how it's s'posed to be
    no matter where they wander
    from post to in between,
    from here to over yonder,
there's no place for them to land
    Lonely are the free
    The silent are the strong
not so much as a whisper
    tells you anything is wrong
    You've known all along,
but you can't help but listen
    and now the moment's gone.
    It keeps you hanging on
    until the stillness signaling
    the breaking of the dawn,
    is shattered by the sirens
    singing sacrificial songs
    The silent are the strong.
That's all they used to see
    a violent shadow passing 'cross
    the sun so fleetingly
that if you have to ask you miss it
    (?) you see
    Lonely are the free
    Lonely are the free

when I've heard this on leafs of grass. made me cry so hard. I've been "free" way to long. always going left, when left is wrong. always to late, or just missed you living alone isnt the life for me... forever a fan of Steve Earle

    tells you anything is wrong

    keeps you hanging on

I love this song so much. It bears such strong meaning. I don't like any of Steve Earle's other music and I typically despise country music as a whole, but this is amazing. I'm thinking about getting 'lonely are the free' tattooed somewhere. I really don't like the studio album version, however. I'd love to find a rendition of this without the rain at the beginning.

Em muitas fases da caminhada já curti esse som .( Lonely Are the Free) eu conheci no filme irmãos de sangue (Leaves of Grass) no fim do filme !
me ativa varias memorias diferentes, tempos diferentes sempre a mesma vibe!
uma onda boa de euforia de pensamentos de VIDA varias delas .
e em todas elas eu mudo um pouco sendo sempre o mesmo no meio da fumaça .

Wanting chords? Real easy.. c major, a minor, back to c.. then c to a minor to f, back to a minor then c.. add first string first fret between transitions of c to a minor and back.. you'll figure the rest on your own.. cheers!!

You come into this World alone. You leave it the exact same way no matter who holds you hand in your final moments. I will embrace it, don’t need no one to hold my hand, I’m a mans man. Just my dog because at the end of the day I have come to realize that animals are better than people!🐕🐕⛄️❄️🐕
We are free. Free of drama and stress. Just chill. Peace and quiet. Play some Steve Earle.

Thank you "Tomwolff0" for posting this song for everyone to enjoy and thank you Steve Earle for creating this Masterpiece =). Loving this tune a lot.

regarding the two (?) the last one is "any way you see"
as first the first, it's tough. it sounds close to something like "until the stillness' signaling the breaking of the dawn"
    hope that helps!
thanks much for the post. it was beautiful in the movie and just as so here. much appreciated.

*_Welcome To The World || It's Really Windy_*
No it’s like we woke up in a dream. A dream full of wonders and rules and pain and senses.
I find this place very uncomfortable while others shine and wander in wonder and fly and sore and don’t want to go back… no more.
Gravity is like a ten ton brick and when it breaks your back your done… that’s it.
You live and survive to die. In the mean time trying to figure out why.
Everything you have and know will be lost… some things are priceless, such things have no cost.
Welcome to time and the mortal soul, one by one … watch … them … go.

צדקה "the world is broken we have to fix it." quote from movie. good song. sorta Dylany and i REALLY appreciate the lyrics, thanks very much, tomwolff0, nice photos above also.
Happy Succot, good film for thinking about at harvest time, has many unanswered questions, but they are all good ones. Ed Norton's Bill/Brady is a bit like Jekyll & Hyde, music is similar to "O Brother, Where Art Thou" music.
Tim Blake Nelson and Ed Norton are understated partners here, good film & sound track.

Steve Earle just recently released the track listing for his next album, which comes out in April. "Lonely Are the Free" will be on it, so the track should be available as an mp3 and I am sure the lyrics will be available with the liner notes.

@drewactual to answer my own question above,, it is: "until the still is signaling the breaking of the dawn" and "and is shattered by the SIRENS singing sacrificial songs".. which makes the meaning of this part of the song some strong shit yo... and makes me like it that much more..

This song is not on any of his albums, nor is it in his discography yet. I don't know why - my only guess is that the website is rarely updated. As far as I'm aware this is the first copy available anywhere on the internet. The movie starring Edward Norton, "Leaves of Grass", hasn't been released yet onto DVD either. I was privileged enough to get a sneak peak. I assume that when the movie is released onto DVD, this song will be available on some type of soundtrack.

I'm having trouble understanding the line between the lines "keeps you hanging on" and "the breaking of the dawn"... and also, does he say (in that same area) is it "and is shattered by the silence singing sacrificial songs" or, maybe "and is shattered by the sirens singing sacrificial songs"?? could go either way..
