Even that Build prototype is fascinating. The engine has such a unique 'feel' and look to it. My favourite engine, by far.

I completely agree, even in this early state it has a great vibe. The build engine games just feels so good to play. I've spent a lot of time with it over the years and can easily say it's one of the best game engines of all time, imo. Thanks for the comment :)

@@revenantevil Better than the doom engine?? The build engine was prone to way more glitches. Sure is more dynamic with way more features but is way more buggy. Im pretty sure ID tech 1 ran faster and smoother too

Build is definitely more complex than DooM's engine.
That being said DooM has insane optimisation.
So I think it's just a case of what you want out of the engine.

Interesting is that in LameDuke the slimer could only be killed with the plasma gun. I'm assuming that was done deliberately, because the devs had some kind of vision for the creature that we never got to see due to the the plasma gun getting scrapped and the the enemy being tedious to deal with anyhow (if they had kept the plasma gun, but the player didn't have it for whatever reason, i.e. dying and restarting with a pistol).

    Surprisingly
some footage of the lame Duke has no resemblance to Final Duke 3d. I'd say it's Rise of the Triads beta, but not DN3D.
In the final version, they were able to find the perfect combination with city blocks and alien ships on Earth and in space, while maintaining a consistent style when the game is recognizable by a single screenshot taken anywhere in the level. I hadn't thought about this until your video!

I played this really long ago. In a way it was cool because it was like having a full version of the game for free, but it actually wasn't the proper duke game from the final build. There were some cool things going on in the levels, like spaceships flying around outside to give the illusion of the outer space areas being more alive. It was actually just geometry moving in circles, but they'd probably have polished that more so it wasn't noticeable in a final version.

It's not really a cut level of Ken's Labyrinth (as that game was meant to recreate Wolf3D, not Doom), it just uses assets from it and its music engine. The level is 100% native to Build, and you can actually play the Duke version hidden inside LameDuke's files by using Ken's Build tool CONVMAP5 (to port from map version 4 to 5, same as LameDuke) .

Also just to note, Assault Troopers/Captains in the final game typically only use their jetpacks if: A) Duke uses his. B) Duke and the AT/AC are on equal ground and Duke jumps. C) Duke is on a higher level than them upon the AT/AC seeing him. Not necessarily whenever they feel like.

Speaking of skins: You should have copied the "tiles005" into your Duke-directory, it contains the Duke-skin. I extracted the Lame-Duke-skin into normal Duke, so you could watch that skin in the mirror of Hollywood, if you show all the old types of enemies.

The trooper and android enemies look interesting, As if they were the kind of typical dangers Duke would fight in between stopping supervillians and alien attacks. Duke might have been the type of military character that was singlehandedly taking down dictatorships all over the world on government orders which fits in with his 80s action film persona.
It could be seen as a day in the life for Duke fighting rank and file soldiers and drone units in some war torn part of the world. No aliens (or as we see very little), no mad scientists, just The King getting into the nitty gritty of more realistic military work. But the Devs probably saw that as boring and scrapped most of it believing that a more grandiose story of Duke fighting a bigger invasion would pull in more players.
although personally a COD style game about Duke in a more realistic setting fighting foreign troops in Infinite Warfare style armor taking down a petty dictatorship would also be pretty interesting to play as well.

There's the fact that there's a lot of grime in the environment, the plumes of flame that eject out the tops of buildings like in Blade Runner, and in one of the levels (I think in the third episode) there's a massive TV on the side of the building like in Blade Runner, but it seems to be unfinished.
This can be found in what's called Lameduke, not later versions as far as I know.
As a bonus, there's also some influences in Duke Nukem Forever 2001, such as the flying police cars.

But yeah, I did play a bit of LameDuke, though for whatever reason, it looked different from anything anyone's ever shown, or rather, it looked like what you're showing off in the video here, but it was all from a second person perspective or something. Honestly, I wish they kept this setting for the final game, because it fits in much better with what's established in DN1's skyboxes and DN2's prologue (NeoLA, futuristic skyscrapers, the works). Interestingly enough, only the 1994 build seems to actually feature the Rigelatin rifle that Duke uses in DN2 and supposedly escaped with, or at least I'm assuming that it's that weapon, since it's an energy rifle that shoots blue energy bolts.
