Classic Olympic highlights from the Mexico 1968 Olympic Games as Kenya's Kipchoge Keino finishes off a topsy turvy Games with a gold medal in the men's 1,500m event, winning by a great margin.
Kip Keino, an uncoached Nandi tribesman from Kenya, was already 28 years old when he made his second Olympic appearance at the 1968 Mexico City Games. Suffering from violent stomach pains caused by a gall bladder infection, Keino entered the 10,000m. He was running with the leaders when, with two laps to go, he doubled up with pain and fell onto the infield. He jumped back up and finished the race, but he was disqualified for leaving the track.
Four days later, he earned a silver medal in the 5,000m, trailing Mohamed Gammoudi of Tunisia by barely a metre. In the 1,500m, Keino tried to neutralize the finishing kick of the favourite, Jim Ryun, by building up a huge lead. His tactic worked and he won by 20m, the largest margin of victory in the history of the event.

I named a character in one of my children's books for Kip Keino. I decided to name the girl "Elsa" after the lion in "Born Free" because little girls can be as fierce as little lionesses. When I was picking the boy's name, my thoughts were already towards Kenya and I remembered a commercial showing Kip Keino training by himself, running up a long hill. Writing is a kind of lonely marathon, too, so I named the boy "Kip." Of course, most people would not put all those things together but the layers of meaning are fun for the author. Watching the Olympics was really important to my family when I was a kid, and it was my first exposure to the international world. Very important!

Keino was actually 1.8 seconds outside of Ryun's world record of 3:33:.1....and it would indeed be an astonishing run at altitude were it not for the fact that Keino was Kenyan and was born, lived and trained at altitude which gave him a major natural advantage over Ryun and the others in Mexico. An intelligent tactic race by Keino. In all fairness if the race was run at sea level Ryun would've shattered the Olympic and world record for the gold. Keino as well would've finished under the record. Ryun had already proven that notion earlier in Los Angeles when he broke Herb Elliott's world 1500 meter record. But Jim had to hold back in 1968 due to the altitude and settle for the silver medal. He hoped Kip would come back to him. He did not. In 1968 George Young of the U.S. was leading the final yards of the Olympic steeplechase and looked like a winner, but the "altitude monster" suddenly stuck out its invisible foot and tripped him, and George had to settle for the bronze. Where is the fairness to it all?

But more than any other country(or continent) the U.S. is closing the gap on the Africans. For a country that indulges in so many other sports, the talent pool is spread out and diluted. One has to wonder if the best runners in the U.S. are not in the sport of running at all but on the soccer field, the baseball diamond, the tennis court , or the lacrosse field... hmmmm

I would say they're both worthy. It's really like apples and oranges to make such a comparison. @@sundromos9456 Not sure the expectations on Ryun going into 1968 were unrealistic. He'd beaten Keino by a huge margin when they'd last met in LA in 1967 when he set the WR. His defeat here was a little like Great Britain's Kerr in the 2024 1,500. His silver has been viewed a little as a failure to get gold due to his being such a strong favourite to win. The 1500 has a history of beaten favourites in the Olympics though.

I didn't understand Jim's strategy of sitting back, but for Keino to run a PR 1,500 at altitude was amazing in it's own right. But today the U.S. runners are closing the gap on the Africans, more than any nation on Earth. And considering the variety of sports our kids have here, the talent pool is dispersed and diluted ..

The one race Jim Ryan needed to not allow the front runner to get away early. He always beat Keino before this big one. High altitude one factor, but not the key factor.

Just the original broadcast would be nice instead of this "inspirational" music! It feels so manipulative. I would prefer the historical aspect of the race, not the "feel good" packaging of the Olympic corporation.

Well I agree that all these other "sports" like badminton and golf etc. etc. are ridiculous but no one asked my opinion. Also despite being a former military man I don't agree on all the wars we fight such as Vietnam where I was. I also believe that we all would have been better off had my European ancestors adopted the Native Americans way of life (hunter-gatherer) when we first came to the Americas instead of imposing ours on them . Speaking of melanin it has been my observation that some of the best athletes such as Ashton Eaton (two time Olympic decathlon gold medalist) are a blend of black and white. Look at Barack Obama (smart) white mother, black father. Mixing of the races is best in my opinion. As for the Kenyan runners, they are great because they were born at altitude forcing their bodies to grow stronger as an adaptive response and also their culture which is harsh and primitive and they have a mind set that does not limit them to barriers. Finally... "Can't we all just get along?"

I don't eat like the average American. I consume pasture raised meats, eggs, etc. My diet is high fat, moderate protein and very low carb. I eat no cakes or cookies, sodas etc. I am a former paratrooper and still try to emulate that way of life with fairly rigorous training. @ 67 I can still do 10 good pull ups and also do "Turkish get-ups". Peace and be well and remember that there is only one race, that being the human race as we all originated out of equatorial Africa.

Who ever said anything about being superior? (I'm assuming you're speaking to me?) Certainly not me as I believe Homo Sapiens (that's all humans dear) are the scourge of our planet. The "white man" has probably done more than his fair share of planetary destruction but no race is above reproach. Perhaps the dog is the greatest creation. That would be "God" spelled in reverse. Cheers!

I don't quite see how it would be interesting. Just a guy falling onto the field due to severe pain. Not much of a show and he probably didn't make a comeback or anything, so it would not be something worth watching
