Agreed! You might find several that can come close, but this is a surprisingly mature performance by a young group. There's a tiny precision problem near the end, but they come out of it for a strong finish! The percussion section is EXCEPTIONAL in this! I have heard some performances where they get a little too carried away, but this group plays like they are a complete part of the ensemble! Also, there are a couple of you tube recordings of this with the trumpets playing rotary valve instruments; that just does NOT work in Gershwin. Loved seeing this trumpet section on piston trumpets (with the Amado water keys! good job guys!) This is definitely a very fun performance of this piece!
Possibly true about the first section (although there a lot of his signatures there, too), but the middle section (the slow canon), is pure, unmistakable Gershwin. The bluesy wails of the strings soar over some of the most lush polytonal underpinnings I've ever heard. He managed to make totally unexpected progression choices seem inevitable. Just brilliant.
There are lots of other performances of this on UA-cam, and they drive me crazy because none of them are anywhere near this one in expressiveness, tempo, sheer musicianship, great conducting, getting right inside the music. George would have loved this!
@@larryecross If I have just the sound on, I keep "seeing" him up there conducting. Did you know there are Gershwin sightings, sort of like Elvis, ever since he died, including by his own brother? He left us too soon, so I guess he likes to hang around sometimes.
Grandissimo Dos Santos!
Wow. Great. Congratulations to 1st Trumpet. Congrats also to 1st Oboe, 1st Flute, 1st Clarinet. Excellent Hornists. Excellent Strings and Percussion. Bravo!! 👏👏 Muchas Gracias. Best regards from BRZ🇧🇷Santos City. São Paulo State. Thank you !!!
+Maxwell Norton Yes, so would I but I did attend a concert with this played in Glasgow Scotland UK not so long ago, that performance was equally as good
I have been reading various Gershwin bios, and they ALL miss the boat on this one. One said it was poor stuff compared to Rhapsody in Blue, and another said it was fairly good lesser Gershwin, but perhaps because of all that tricky polytonality and contrasting rhythms, it "never caught on". Such Neanderthals! And one of these bios was written in the 1980s. There was a transformation, even a transfiguration going on in music then, with Gershwin breaking ground and leading the way, and they simply did not or perhaps would not hear it.
**Love this performance** perfect tempi, spirit and energy. AND...of course great Youth Orchestra led by a great conductor: Joshua Dos Santos GERSHWIN got it right in 1932. The original title of the score is RUMBA. He captures the energy of 1930 Havana to a bulls eye. Research and listen on you tube to Antonio MACHIN, Sexteto HABANERO, Miguelito VALDES and Orquesta Casino de la Playa and to early MACHITO and his Afro Cubans to hear what GERSHWIN was drawing upon. WE RETURN TO CUBA....2015

I always say that young people orchestras are our hope for the future. Music saves our soul.
From 2020, I salute you. Never have we needed it more.
Assolutamente d'accordo!!!
Cuban Overture is certainly as significant a piece as "Rhapsody" and "American" - it deserves to be performed more.
I agree
Have never heard a youth orchestra anywhere near this good.

Hot stuff! If you didn't know this was Gershwin, you'd never guess. It seems he could do anything.

He left the world too soon.
Our great american composer!
I can't believe I've never heard this suite, and I love Gershwin's big works. What a wonderful performance; sexy and confident!
Sempliicemente meravigliosi ! Strepitoso il Direttore d' Orchestra !
Extraordinary performance of this very complex piece by this youth orchestra. They sound like a million bucks!
There are lots of other performances of this on UA-cam, and they drive me crazy because none of them are anywhere near this one in expressiveness, tempo, sheer musicianship, great conducting, getting right inside the music. George would have loved this!
Absolutely in agreement
George certainly would have been just floored over this performance- I know it's exactly as he had it in his mind !

Here I am again! Such a joy. I won't listen to ANY other version. The strings have such heat, and the percussion!
Verdaderamente és una preciosa pieza

Quedé encantada.👏
I only found this piece recently. I thought I had heard everything Gershwin wrote ... but, WOW. What an amazing piece of music.
What a piece! Long live Gershwin! A genius! And a great performance!
What playing !!!! So warm, so affectionate.
Grandissimo Dos Santos!
EXCELENTE JOSHUA!!!!!

Brings you to tears , magnificent
I'm crying! Thank you very much for this magical music experience!
A youth orchestra, outstanding!

This is indeed a top performance. I would love to have been there.
+Maxwell Norton Yes, so would I but I did attend a concert with this played in Glasgow Scotland UK not so long ago, that performance was equally as good
Magnificent. A Great performance that made me stand up and clap. Bravo to all.

A Excellent Performance. Thanks. Out.
magnifica interpretación!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This has got to be the best version I've heard so far - pacing is fantastic!
Thank you for sharing this wonderful moment, I am cured of all my ills.
Muy orgulloso! Gracias, Gershwin!
Wonderful !
This is fantastic. He did it without a score. Very impressive!
He is the best
I just noticed that too!
He can conduct many long symphonies from memory. Please also check Vasquez, Lopez-Gomez and Dudamel👍
Splendid performance!
Beautiful performance! I'd love to see this live...probably my fave piece right now. Thanks for sharing this
Bravo Joshua :) Besos!
Maravilha!!!!
These kids are GOOD!
This might had been called VIVA GERSHWIN.
GERSHWIN = GENIUS

Me encanta esta interpretación, Enhorabuena.
Thank you so much, this is a wonderful orchestra

Hermosa interpretación! Me encanta esta obertura!
so handsome !!!!!!!!
My God!!! They are only teenagers..But they sound like profesionals...
Love the two contrasting rhythms - how does he do THAT? He's Gershwin. "Swonderful.
They are better than the LA Phil
Such amazing talent ! and of course Gershwin !
super
For personal use: 8:14
Excellent performance. But as with most it should have an accelerando for those closing several measures
Why has no modern rap producer sampled the part at @7:57 yet?

Sounds quite a lot like it'd be by Heitor Villa-Lobos
Rumba??? I would say Conga!!
Did they change the name of the orchestra? Didn't used to be Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra?
There are different orchestras the Simon Bolivar AND the Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestras! hahaha
Lorenzo Olivero Both fabulous.
Bravo!
