Hey Art, amazing work as always!! With the new GPU export, do you know if it sorted or helped with your CPU spiking issues on the Mac Studio Max?? I'm looking at picking one up but your other tests all put it in roughly the same place as the laptops and for export at least, this GPU option makes the M1 Mac Mini look arguably better buy for a desktop purchase. Thanks
Thank you. So don't think of the Max as in desktop or laptop, just think of the Max as a chip. The performance is about the same comparing the form factor. This was something that intel could not do but Apple Silicon can, so choose the best form factor for your workflow. And as much as the Mac mini Looks great, I still maintain my stance in the review that I made when Apple launched the machine back then, that it is not a true pro machine. If you need more than 16GB or want everything to run fast across the board then Mac mini is not necessary the machine.
Interesting, I have the M1 Mac Mini and whilst the Auto option is the default when you click Custom you do NOT get the option to tick all boxes, you can only enable GPU acceleration for display only, other options are greyed out and unavailable.
@@ArtIsRight My M1 Mini is 16gb, and I have the latest release of Lightroom, auto is the default but GPU acceleration is for display only, no other options are available when you click custom.
hmm, they might have changed that in the latest release. Or you have to do this helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html Use SOLUTION #3, it works for me
I just updated my LR to the latest version and did a simple test of this and got somewhat weird result om my Mac Studio Ultra 64GB. In first test I changed to custom and removed the checkmark for use GPU for export. Then I exported 226 R5 raws (probably not enough). It ran for 1 minute and 26 secons. Then I enabled GPU for export and exported the same raws. Now the run time was 2 minutes and 2 seconds ! Switching to auto and did it again, now the runtime was 1 minute and 13 seconds. So it seems there is a difference between auto and custom with all enabled. I should probably try with a larger number of raw files.
I thought I was the only one who experienced this one. it seems that if you got a slow graphics card compared with the cpu it's better not to use the feature. I tried exporting 100 photos and got 1min 30sec on auto and 2mins 15sec with gpu exporting on.
@@ArtIsRight I have an M1 with 8GB ram and enabling GPU for export drops the export performance to unacceptable levels. It iterally drops from approx 20 images a minute to about 5.
Sony A7R5 , 61 Mpxel , 200 Raw Threadripper 1950X + 64Go : export = 8'16 (environ) Geforce 1080 Ti 11Go : export = 3'55 (environ) When i use my graphic card, it is use the Cpu at the same time or only GPU? is it possible to use the both at the same time? is there some test with new graphic card? Hi Art. Thanks so much for you time. I have this problem now with Ventura 13.1 . Do you know something? Lightroom Classic suddenly supports only limited graphics acceleration (Mac M1 Max). When I want to use custom, it just lets me turn on "use gpu for display" , not the other 2
thanks for the video. I got M1 Max with 64gb of ram. in the settings. it's same as yours stats it supports full acceleration. However I've noticed when Converting RAW to DNG files in Lightroom classic. the CPU usage is high but the GPU usage is very low. Does Lightroom classic don't use M1 Max GPU for converting raw to DNG?
Hi Art Nicole here I had to turn off GPU as everytime I opened an image in lightroom it would flicker going light and dark also, I read somewhere others had the same problem and thats what would stop the flickering. I tried it and it worked, but it would be nice to have that feature. Just so you know what Im running, a M2 mac mini pro with a benq sw321c just bought them in the last month. also I have no thunderbolt bridge connection and was told thunderbolt 4 was not compatible with 4k monitors, is this right?
Hi Nicole, a few things I like to clarify first. Thunderbolt 4 or 3 or 2 are all compatible with 4K displays and they will work just fine. Just have to use the correct / compatible cables. Now this said, the flickering probably has more to do with LRC compatibility with M2 or bug in the M2 which most likely stem from LRC and possibly OS. How much memory do you have no your system and what are you doing to the when the screen flicker? In library / develop module etc?
@@ArtIsRight Hi Art thanks very much for getting back to me. This is my first time using a mac for me, so I`m on L`s lol. I used the cable that came with the m2 to connect to the monitor. I have 32 GB the flashing from dark to light on the image is in the develop mode in lightroom classic, it also happens in photoshop camera raw, and Affinity photo 2. Also in develop mode.
Hello Art, thanks for this video, I didn't know this option could be activated. I am trying to activate this on Mac mini M2 Pro, but only the first box can be checked (use gpu for display) but not the other two. Does this happen to you too? Maybe this GPU is not supported yet?
Probably not supported yet which is why. Something to note, when I tested mine on full auto, it already support full hardware acceleration so might be better off leaving it at auto.
hello, I have the m2 base MB air. I changed it from Auto to Custom and can only check the first box (use GPU for display) other options I can't check even though I have the first checked. thanks for the help.
I'm not sure why that is happening. I was able to enable it on the various base M2 that I have. All I can say is make sure you are running the latest version of LRC.
I have a sony a7r3 and I'm trying to guarantee 1000 raw files in Lightroom, but I'm thinking about which option would be good when working with m2 pro. In particular, the ram and gpu options are the biggest concerns, but I would like to know which option is most recommended at around $3300. Capture One will also be installed.
I just tried this with my laptop but cpu export is faster. my laptop spec is i5 1135g7, iris xe, mx450, 16gb ram, ssd. I've exported 100photos and I was able to do it with 2mins 30sec with auto and with the gpu exporting enable I got about 3mins 15sec. I'm doing it while my task manager. I also notice that when I use gpu export cpu performance is only at 30-40% while when set in auto it bumps to 100%.
I hear you, this guide is really intended toward Apple M Silicon with 8 GB of memory or Intel computer with later generation powerful discrete GPU, i.e. circa 2018 and later. The issue is that MX450 is not the most powerful, it might be for its time, however, GPU optimization on these latest LR is for the current crop of GPU really.
Just tested this..
80% faster exporting time with my Asus M16 12700H + RTX 3060 6gbs
Amazing.
Nice!
Thanks for using my music! Glad you liked it!
Thank you for open sourcing it, they are fantastic!
Super! Thanks for the info, nothing to do on my machine but let’s give LRC a whirl. There’s a 1st time for everything

Thankyou so much!
You're welcome!
My LR auto AI mask does not work...would this be the same issue with GPU or CPU?
I don't think it is related to this setting.
Even on the brand new Mac Studio Ultra this option is off by default. Astonishing.
Interesting, it was full automatic on mine. At least the export time showed as such.
