Messing with Molds & Resins

- I thought I would share a few experiences I have had with silicon molds and epoxy resins. Mainly I want to show that these molds will not last forever, at least the way I use them. If you have experienced problems like mine and wish to share how you overcame them, please comment and bring me up to speed. Thanks for watching.
Hey captain mike. Just found your channel.
Thank you so much. For takimg the time to share your knowledge. Lots of Gratitude from the Caribbean Island of Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹
Thank YOU for watching My videos!
DIY Microwave Kiln | Melt Glass in the Microwave. Capt. Mike, you may want to view this video.
I just started doing resin. I have one of those silicone cups and there was some uncured resin (I mixed the resin poorly) I was able to clean the cup with alcohol. You may give that a try. Also, some molds are meant to be shiny and some are made to be matte. Sometimes they become matte over time if you accidentally rough up the surface. I have also been told that sometimes when you run heat over the top of a silicone mold to release the bubbles, it can "fuse" the silicone to the resin. Not sure if these tips will help, but I hope so. I enjoyed your video and that charcuterie board was beautiful. If you dont mind me asking, what resin do you use on those? Right now, I am using Stone Coat Countertop resin because it is very heat resistant and I plan on making some coasters and maybe trivets.
Shanna, thanks for all the tips. I'll look into them. The resin I am using right now for the boards is Total Boat Table Top Epoxy. It pours a little thick, but evens out nicely and is supposed to be UV resistant.
Microwave Basics. I left you a message on the previous video, was not sure if you would ever see it.
I was going to ask you about using tempered glass, but I found out on another video it can be used for glass fusing, not sure about microwave glass fusing.
It will fuse just fine.
@@CaptMike Thanks.
Have you tried using vinegar? It's a lightly acidic and not strong like what you had used. I think what happened is the lacquer thinner melted it, and when it dried, they fused together.
I have not, but I will try it. Thanks
Aventurine, have you ever done anything with this?
Are you refering to the glass color by that name or the mineral?
@@CaptMike The mineral, I have a huge rock of Aventurine in my front yard, just curious if i can do anything with it to do with glass fusing.
@@raysanders332 My guess would be that the rock would not melt, but bust into pieces. I have tried melting obsidian/volcanic glass and it just bubles up.
@@CaptMike Thanks.
Do you have any idea why glass fusing molds are so expensive? Aren't they made of ceramic slip?
Yes, they are ceramic, but a lot of design and testing goes into a mold before it can be sold to customers with any confidence that it will perform as expected. I have made a few and they are not easy to make.
@@CaptMike Thanks.
@@CaptMike Can be an expensive hobby, I do not plan to sell anything.
Where do you buy your over spray glaze?
I buy most of my supplies on Amazon Prime.
Can you spray the molds with mold release?
I have, but it is not needed in silicon molds.
Can you stack items in the microwave kiln on stilts?
If you have room, yes. Just remember, the volumn will effect the time it takes to fire something, even glass.
@@CaptMike Thanks.
Could you lightly grease them?
I'm not sure. I have tried using mold release on larger molds with some success.
Do you make your own kiln wash? If so, what is the recipe?
I buy it powdered and mix it with water.
@@CaptMike Can you please tell me which brand, I only find two options on Amazon, I am not sure they are powder.
@@raysanders332 start here: www.amazon.com/Fireworks-FW737A-1-Pound-Kiln-Wash/dp/B008D1OQGW/ref=sr_1_4?crid=JQRC61KEL1ZY&keywords=kiln+wash&qid=1659490878&sprefix=kiln+wash%2Caps%2C93&sr=8-4. The description will usually state if it is a liquid or a powder/dry. One pound will last you a long time.
Is there any such thing as ceramic slip?
Yes, it is liquified clay body.
@@CaptMike Isn't ceramic slip different than regular clay slip?
@@raysanders332 no, it's the same thing. I make slip all the time by liquifing a clay body. I think I have a video on how to do it.
@@CaptMike I am about to give up before I get started, I cannot seem to find all of the information I need. Thanks
@@raysanders332 What is it you need and what is your imediate goal?
What is the purpose of Kiln Wash?
Kiln was helps keep glass and glaze from sticking to the kiln floor material. Always use shelf paper too.
@@CaptMike Thanks.
