30 years after my father retires they bring back warrant officers in the Air Force. I know in my heart my father would have made a warrant officer back in the 80s. He was always top of the class when he was in. He was a munitions expert most of his time in.

Its about time; however, from what I've heard and read it'll be limited to only the Cyber career field. Should mirror the Army's warrants and expand it to rated aviators and other highly technical career fields. Side note, I actually looked into Blue to Green a few years back for the sole purpose of eventually going warrant (270A).

Currently, the US Space Force is NOT going to start appointing warrant officers (WOs). General Allvin, the Chief of Staff of the US Air Force, indicated that the Air Force will be looking to appoint WOs within the ranks of the IT and Cyber Operations Air Force Specialty Codes (AFSCs, same as Army/Marine MOSs). His jurisdiction is ONLY within the US Air Force. General Saltzman, the Chief of Space Operations, specifically mentioned that they would NOT implementing a WO program within the US Space Force at this time.
A bit of history: In 1947, the National Security Act was instituted into law establishing, amongst other things, the Department of Defense and the Department of the Air Force (the latter of which was, as correctly called out by @RobthaBlack, originally known as the Army Air Corps). Since its inception, the Air Force never fully codified the WO's place within its structure (they inherited the warrant officers from the Army). In 1958 (with the authorization of the Military Pay Act of 1958), the Air Force implemented two new enlisted grades, the Senior Master Sergeant (E-8) and Chief Master Sergeant (E-9). These grades have since been traditionally filling the roles of superintendents, chief enlisted managers, and senior enlisted advisors. Unofficially, the Air Force came to the conclusion that (at that time) these two grades can fulfill the roles that they had current WOs filling. They ceased appointing WOs in 1959, the last active duty WO (CW4 James Long) retired in 1980, and the last reservist WO (CW5 Bob Barrow) retired in 1992 (as a CW4, later honorarily promoted to CW5, the only Airman to ever hold the rank). By law, the Air Force has always been able to reappoint WOs, they just hadn't.

New to the channel. So a senior enlisted man in, say, the army, could possibly get a transfer to the air force and a promotion to WO, just like that?

Possibly, as long as you meet the prerequisites and then have to do a branch transfer which is a pain but yes. It won’t happen overnight for sure, there is a process.

What a horrific idea. Signed, a Soldier. Airmen, do NOT allow this change to happen, it will poison your NCO Corps.

How since WO’s aren’t part of the Nco Corps?
