    My girlfriend's car had the same problem. She was stuck in a gas station. I took out the plastic tube and brought it to Napa and asked if they had something to fit. The guy found a perfect match... tubing for an air line. I bought 2 feet of it for $1.24 and she was back running in a few minutes. That got her home but I bought the actual part and installed it a week later because that tubing may not be able to handle hot coolant if it's only spec'd to handle air. But it worked perfectly and I was able to brag that I did a $1.24 BMW repair. And really, that's what it's all about.

    Hey Jake! Great video, very applicable! I had the same problem with the wife's F30/N55 motor. I had little time to get her car fixed so I needed to go to the BMW dealership for another part and got this too ($54!) at the same time. Because the wife's expansion tube cracked at the connector right at the radiator upper hose connector, I couldn't have used a copper tubing replacement. I agree, a piece of copper tubing would have been better than this. What was their engine cost-engineer thinking? Add a few thousand heat cycles and instant coolant gusher. I was just thinking I can replace the upper radiator to upper hose connector with a proper aluminum 3 way fitting, but there aren''t any options that I have seen aftermarket (I in theory could build one with straight aluminum gauge tubing to the ID of the upper tube, drill a port for the return hose, but that's a lot of work for a $20 part replacement!). This didn't happen to me in quite the same way, but I was moving that coolant tube to take the fan out for some reason and the tube broke in about three places. I bet that plastic gets brittle over time due to heat cycling.
    I've also needed to replace that upper rad hose because the nipple broke off. I noticed there was some blue crystallized coolant around it so it was probably already cracked slightly before it broke off completely.
    Last time I tried to do the coolant bleed, I couldn't get the pump to come on. I had to do it through INPA. I probably just didn't hold the gas down long enough.

    • @jake_spence
      @jake_spence  4 роки тому

      Yup, that plastic line and the nipple are both brittle. Not sure what BMW was thinking... but as far as the coolant bleeding procedure, I've done it a bunch of times on different E9X and E8X BMWs, works every time but you definitely need to hold the pedal down and do the HVAC settings properly. Give it a few minutes and it'll start going.

    I have a 2008 E90 (335XI) which is leaking coolant somewhere on the passenger side of the engine and it is causing a lot of smoke as apparently the coolant is touching something hot. The smoke comes from down low on the passenger side between the engine and the body. So far I cannot see where the leak is coming from. If you have any ideas I'd appreciate it as it is causing a lot of smoke. Thanks and nice info in your video.
    Phil

      I could be wrong, but that sounds more like a valve cover gasket that's leaking. It's the typical location for smoke as it drips on the exhaust.
      It's not a bad DIY job but you need the special ultra long 10mm. I ended up using a 6 pt 10mm wrench that I bent in a vise and a grinder to thin out enough to rotate to engage the wrench again... a 12 pt works have been better. Or buy the part from Amazon. But I realized this hours into the job with my girlfriend (her car) standing there, so I had to go into HERO MODE.

      @@ijdad99 Thanks for the info. Appreciated...How long does that 10mm socket have to be so i can find it. Thanks....

      @@uptownphotography -. Google the following...
      CTA Tools 1710 Deep Socket-10mm
      It's available on Amazon for just under $13. In the reviews, it mentions being used for the valve cover gasket. It's for the 3 ground pins.
      Also, if doing the repair following the video on UA-cam, definitely take the time to move all the wires out of the way where the engine computer is. It makes getting the valve cover back on much easier.
      BMW suggests replacing the valve cover at the same time. I did this for my girlfriend and suggested we just do the gasket for $20 instead of the cover for over $500. That worked for 3 years, and then the cover failed, which caused the car to lurch when the gas pedal was pressed down for fast acceleration. So she had to have me do that in the end. Second time is a breeze... which is how I know to move the wires. That 5 extra minutes saved 20 minutes with wireless knocking the gasket off. Live and learn.

    Whenever you have a cracked radiator or cracked coolant hose go ahead and replace the other three hoses. TRUST ME. I did my radiator replaced the two large hoses and then while removing the fan to do the camshafts I broke the expansion tank hose. If one goes they are all on their way out 😂
    Lastly replace that Mickey Mouse flange going towards the oil cooler. It will break I promise you.

    Hey Jake! I have a completely unrelated question to your video, but I have a 2008 335xi and I'm running FBO with upgraded fuel pump and e50. When I run the ethanol tunes, my car tends to ubderboost. It the lower gears it can be about 4psi under target. I noticed in some of my logs that my DME sometimes tries to compensate by raising load target but the boost stays put.
    Yesterday I got into a race and made it to the top of 5th gear. In that log I finally got close to target boost at 18psi as target was 18.5. I recently replaced some brittle vacuum lines in hopes to fix it but it didn't fix the problem.
    I'm at the point where I can't seem to find the cause of my issue other than the FA t that I'm on the original turbos at 178000kms or About 115000 miles. Do you have any ideas?

    • @joeotto775
      @joeotto775 4 роки тому +1

      Check over all your vacuum lines again. Especially the two directly behind the oil filter housing. They crack all the time on the bottom where they're pushed over the nipple. Be sure to remove the lines when inspecting so you can check the bottoms of the lines. Have a spool of new vacuum line ready.
      After checking vacuum lines, I'd recommend going over all your boost piping. You said you're fbo so double check those intercooler connections and up pipe connection. Check charge pipe to throttle body connection.
      Remember, in your case if you are making lots of boost but you're 4psi or so short then you likely won't be able to see the crack or leak. You'll need to go over all clamps again and vacuum lines.
      After that, how old are your turbos? Lol
      Hope this helps. - Joe

    • @jake_spence
      @jake_spence  4 роки тому +1

      Hey man, thanks for watching! I think Joe is covering the first bases pretty well. There is no reason the fuel will affect your boost levels. So check the simple stuff first. What tune are you using?

    Hey dude - you mention the 335 and other N?? engine cars. I have an 2014 BMW X1 that has the coolant going down until light comes on every couple of weeks. so not a bad leak, but it shouldn't be leaking at all. So where to debug this - is it similar to what you are talking about here on this 335

    Germany has strict recycling laws. In fact 15% of modern BMW's are made with recycled plastics. Unfortunately they use these plastic in places that are critical to drivability and in areas that generate a lot of heat which seems counterproductive. How long would plastic coffee pots and coffee cups last? Sadly BMW's are now designed and engineered with planned obsolescence, most are only made to last 3-5 years. I can see why 60-70% of people who buy BMW's, lease them.
