Jamie made the box & it was deposited in Edinburgh. He put Jemmy's name on it and had it delivered, 200 yrs in the future, to the Manse where Fiona lived. Roger would have been in touch with Fiona and she contacted him to pick up the box.
The priest hole that Mandy hides in is actually quite an interesting historical thing. When catholics were persecuted in Scotland, a lot of great houses (such as Lallybroch) had prist holes built - their function was to conceal the priest when the building was searched. Usually they were hidden chambers in walls, under the flooring etc.
“What are priest holes? Under the rule of Queen Elizabeth I, priests were often imprisoned, tortured and even killed. Priest holes were specially concealed places within houses where they could hide away safely during this time when catholics were being persecuted.”
Since Roger had grown up in Scotland and Brianna had roots there, too, Jamie (who actually made 3 boxes) deduced they would go there. Thus the bank in Edinburgh was still in business in 1980 so the box Jamie deposited there was where the one sent to the Manse, where Fiona lived. Roger got the box from Fiona.
Bold colors can work wonders.. especially with the right decor 🤷♀️ There's definitely rooms you don't want to go too dark, and colors that definitely age the room. But bold choices aren't always bad🤷♀️
This series is so great to watch straight through. But I think watching an episode first time around with your reactions cutting into the dialogue, and matching my own thoughts, makes it so much better😂 Like watching it for the first time with a good friend sitting next to you on the couch❤ Now when I "officially" watch it, i will have your sidebar in my head 😂
Dismal town is mostly Rebel... according to somebody in the book (can't remember who) about 1/3 of the town have the last name "Washington". Tom was just brought back to tell us who wrote that famous obituary.
Yes, Great Dismal Swamp is a real place. It’s near the Atlantic Coast on the NC/VA line. It’s currently a National Wildlife Refuge and relatively untouched.
A bit more explanation of the priest hole. It would never have been a room like that that had a very obvious door. Anyone searching for a priest would have found that immediately. They were usually tiny rooms under the floor camouflaged by rug or a piece of furniture. It was a matter of life or death for the priest and perhaps for the family hiding him.
Roger had cleaned out the house for Fiona before going through the stones, but he had NOT cleaned out the garage. He knew that there were things in there that belonged to his parents, but he hadn't gotten around to looking at them, so Roger suggested they get a safe deposit box in a long-operated bank in Inverness and make instructions for the box to be delivered to the manse when Roger was a child, knowing the Reverend would see the name "Jeremiah MacKenzie" and assume it was some ancestor of Roger's father, and just stick it in the garage with the rest of Roger's family history stuff. The show obviously simplified all that down to simply having the letters deposited into the box until the letters stopped, and then the box was delivered to the manse in 1978. They did all this in Scotland because there is likely no bank in America in 1776 that was still open in 1978. You didn't watch the "previously on" which made a point to remind us that Claire left the Boston house, the bank accounts, everything to Brianna. It was enough money to live comfortably for while, even with the addition of a husband and 2 children. They made the decision to live in Scotland once Mandy was better because of Jem's strong Scottish accent. It was difficult to explain away. He may be American, but he spent all his young life in a Scottish settlement.
Your reaction to Claire's reaction was worth the wait! Caitríona Balfe should get Best Reaction award of the decade! I wish there were such a thing. Then you would win best reaction to a reaction. 😂 A lot of storyline got condensed, but the Outlander essence is all there. Bree is all women patronized in job interviews for traditional "men's " jobs. Stay tuned for the Nuckelavee.
I see many people have informed you of the hideaway area. In simplistic more modern terms think of it as the annex behind the bookcase that Anne Frank hid🤷♀️
They probably put Jeremiah's full name on the box so that they receive it at the right time. If they put Briana's or Roger's name they might have received it when they were kids. They arrived when Mandy was infant, they probably went to England because Roger already knew people there and healthcare is cheaper. They lived there years and kids pick up accents really fast.
I was surprised by the inclusion of the fireship scene, since they obviously have to truncate William's story way down from the books to fit it in the show. I think it was to illustrate William's character and to foreshadow something that likely won't happen until the second half of the season. The scar on William's arm is the same shape as the symbol on the cover of the seventh book, a caltrop. DG's description; "A caltrop resembles a child’s jack, but with four tines. No matter which way you throw it, it will always land with three tines down, the fourth one pointing straight up-and every tine ends in a sharp point." The symbolism is that despite the fact that Jamie has placed distance between him and his secret son, fate keeps having William cross paths with his unknown Fraser family. Remember that despite the fact that we're on the 7th season of this show, these new characters, adult William and the Hunters, are VERY young and naive and have not had the benefit of the experiences we've seen the Frasers go through. William has glorious ideals of war in his head. Rachel is this sheltered little Quaker girl, so just thinks she's flirting with a handsome gentleman, not realizing how dangerous it is. But I still love that scene because William has started to realize that it's not as simple as, "We're the good guys. THEY'RE the bad guys." A rebel just rescued him from the swamp, took him to a rebel doctor and her sister, and now he owes all of them his life. Meanwhile, that commanding officer who sent him on this mission is either misinformed or deliberately sent him into harm's way.
When Tom kissed Claire, it cracks me up. The look on Claires face is hilarious. Roger & Bree both have $ set aside. Claire left everything to Bree. Remember Roger wanted to find Bree & come back to the future. He never planned on staying in the past.
Okay, there's no way to answer your questions without giving away A LOT of future story lines. So, 🤐 Sorry. Man, I'm glad I stayed up late tonight. I can't wait to see your reaction to this. I'm never going to be able to call him William, FYI. To me, he's going to be Willie forever. He's a bonnie young man, very much like Jamie AND John in so many ways, but he's always going to be Willie. Jemmie remembers A LOT of Jamie and Claire. He was 6 when they went back to the 20th. He never forgets his Grannie and Grandda. Lallybroch has been reduced to the land immediately around the house, which is just as well. The Reverend didn't leave Roger much but Frank left Bree quite a chunk of money. And she sold the house in Boston. The scene with Bree and the dam guy is so much CLAIRE that I just cackled all the way through. Ian's not a boy anymore. He was 15 when they arrived in the colonies and they've been there 10 years. He's a grown man and he knows his own mind. He's embraced the colonies and being American. Lallybroch dates back to when Catholic priests were being hunted by the English and Brian and Ellen were Catholic so they were sympathetic to these priest (who were preaching rebellion, BTW) so they built a hidey-hole in the house, the priest-hole. William James is his "Papist name" that Jamie gave him. Willie still remembers. I could tell you that wee Joanie is grown now and wants to be a nun. Or so she thinks. And Laoghaire is being as troublesome as ever. But I won't say anything more. You'll just have to read Seven Stones to Stand or Fall. Denny Hunter is a VERY good doctor for this era. He's also one of my favorite secondary characters. We'll see him and his sister again. I'm fond of both of them. See? This is why I like Denny and Rachel so much. They're GOOD people. Denny's a true Quaker, listening to his conscience, not doctrine. And little Rachel is FIERCE. The British guy who sent Willie into the Great Dismal is Richardson. And we're going to see him again. 🙁
Lallybrock is actually too new to have a "real" priest hole. The house was built by Jamie's father, though the Brock (tower) has been there forever, or one very much like it since it falls down every century or two. But it's one of the things Claire told Jenny to do before she went to find Jamie at Wentworth, like planting potatoes because she knew a famine was coming. She told them to build a secret place to hide, like a priest hole, and sure enough Jamie used it while he was so wounded and sick when he got back from Culloden and too sick to live in the woods alone. And that pretty box with Jemmie's name on it that you're so fashing about? Jamie made it. He's a drive-you-nuts perfectionist about things he builds so it was a very nice box indeed. Jemmie has a Scottish accent because nearly everybody on the Ridge except Bree and Claire had one, and he spent a lot of time with his Grandda. Didn't you love the look on Claire's face when Tom kissed her? It made me giggle a lot. Ms. Balf is such a great facial expression actress.
Jem’s accent is clearly from his father. And Roger and Bri had money left to them from A.) Claire/Frank B.) the reverend and the sale of his home to Fiona. Stop overthinking 😂 or just start remembering what they have shown in the past to explain it all
During the years the Catholic faith was outlawed. Mostly in England under Henry VII and Scotland under James VI most Catholic Recusants families would keep priests hidden as they were often put to death and Catholic Emancipation did not happen until the early 1800s.
All I can say is Whipple wobbly, Timey whiny stuff that’s a Doctor Who reference! About the box 😁. A priest hole was to hide Catholic priests during Tudor times because they were persecuted and burnt alive. So good catholic people would hide priests in households like that one you see there!
Yes these days common sense would say try to “milk” an infection if possible but back then it was trial and error, especially for young Drs like this guy trying learn it all
The box. You know I don't remember. I will have to re-read the books to find out. They have NOT used the gold to fix up the house. Remember, Bree had all the money from both her Mother and Father and the sale of their home in Boston. Roger had whatever money he got from the sale of the Manse after the Reverend died. So, they had quite a bit of money to start with. The Priest Hold was where they would hide the catholic priest when the whole Protestant/Catholic thing happened with good ole Henry 8th.
Bree setzt sich in der Männer Welt in der Zukunft durch. Roger ist noch unschlüssig. Meine Meinung. Wir treffen nun endlich auf William. Ian hilft ihm und bringt William zu den Hunters. In the books, the priest hole is under the floor of the pantry.

The Great Dismal is in southern Virginia almost to the North Carolina border.

I had forgotten Jamie had given him a papist name! I'm glad William remembered.

We actually went and toured Fort Ticonderoga 2 yrs ago!
"And what aspects of plant inspection require a 🍆?"
👏👏👏👏🥳Well done
16:32 you don't need to be the "bread winner" to "take care of" someone 🤷♀️

Cc became irrelevant when "do i look like a Laird" was translated to "do i look like a whale".

I believe in the books they sent 3 boxes to 3 different banks as they were not sure which one might find them in which location.
Fort Ticonderoga was lost to the English just like that , not a shot fired .
Bree setzt sich in der Männer Welt in der Zukunft durch.
Roger ist noch unschlüssig.
Meine Meinung.
Wir treffen nun endlich auf William. Ian hilft ihm und bringt William zu den Hunters.
Claire rennt sprichwörtlich in Tom rein. Dieser nutzt die Chance und küßte sie.
Der Gesichtsausdruck ist zum schießen. 😂😂😂😂😂
Jamie reagiert auf seine Art und Weise.
💋💯❤️💥👍
TG Claire left people in charge that learned from her 🫣😮💨
