Not gonna lie, this song actually makes me cry, especially the bit at 2:43 It just makes me think of an older and more romantic time of mysticism, faith, home, nature and family. It... makes me miss my hometown... After I moved to the city, I've started to think of my home as being like Gensokyo, somehow romantic and magical. I imagine myself looking out over the nearby lake and seeing fairies skip over the water, playing and happy. The churchyard, holy and special, like I could see a cat that would magically appear and disappear, like it's part of god's plan. The great hill nearby, an analogue of Youkai mountain, that there's something mystical and supernatural about it. I know this song is meant to emphasize the scientific and modern, but I just got so hung up on the "Classic tale resurges from this modern cynical fare" I miss my home so badly... Country roads, Kono michi, zuto, yukeba! Ano machi ni, suzuiteru, ki ga suru... country roads...

I love to come back to this song a lot since its what introduced me to touhou so i have a good bit of nostalgia lol. Happens to turn out that maribel is my fave 2hu character too lol
Really good stuff! You really captured the "childlike duo" part in the first half of the song--Maribel and Renko's banter was hilarious! Also, the trade-off rap part starting at about 1:30 was really well done! And the references to the landmarks and incidents of Gensokyo gave a real feel of their writing--as if we, the listeners (who know about the lore) had somehow experienced it.
There are many more, many sort of scales to keep a score~ Wait, wrong song, wrong album, wrong characters xD Anyways, this is lovely, your voices compliment each other so great, and the DDC references towards the end are just 10/10. And I totally, agree, the smug edits are very important indeed!
Reading your comment at the exact time when I heard the "There are many more" part, I was expecting exactly the same verse to follow. Then had the same "wait, what?" moment x) It really is the same intonation though!
:D Thank you! It makes me so happy to hear that, to inspire someone to appreciate the Sealing Club... Basically, Maribel is a psychology student who can see borders between worlds and visit Gensokyo in her dreams. Renko is a physics student who can sense time and location by observing the sky. One believes that fantasy and reality are subjective and interchangeable, while the other believes that there is an objective reality, but they both believe in things like youkai, and so they search together for the paranormal. en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Official_Literature#Music_CDs Except "Dolls," which is unrelated, all their official stories can be read here!
I'm gonna talk about "Upside-down..." onward for a moment and point out what I noticed: "Floating castles turned about" is probably a reference to Kishinjou, the final location of DDC, where you fight Seija and Shinmyoumaru "Ancient Columns" are probably a reference to Kanako, who's primary weapon in 17.5 is Onbashira, but she used them in her very first appearance in MoF as well. Meanwhile, "As a Drum beat fills the air" is less of what I think, and more This kinda sounds like a reference to Raiko Horikawa, extra stage boss of DDC. "Ripples on a misty lake" Obvious reference to Misty lake. "Holy Mountains rising..." is a clear nod to Youkai Mountain, where like half the characters in touhou have appeared in.
I love the flow of this. It's so bouncy and catchy. I'm not sure if it was intentional but it seems like you included pieces from other songs you've covered. "There are many more... Many sorts of scales to keep a score" from Riverside. Mary detailing seeing a cat at a shrine that you sung about in "Schrodinger's bakeneko." A small nod to your ghostly ensemble cover when they talk about "Ghostwriting" (which to you would be a record of the time) plus I believe you quoted Winston Churchill with "Winners write history." it could be a massive stretch, or there could be more. I'm not sure but it's great and, I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Thank you! I like it when people point out things they noticed~ Yes, I couldn't resist subtly referencing Higan Retour after realizing the tune was so similar. The "ghostwriting" pun felt fitting to reuse, since their book probably involves a lot of ghost stories, and Renko is literally the one helping Merry write it down as she dictates. I just hope she's kidding about charging a fee. It's tough making lyrics for two songs from the same music CD without reusing ideas from its associated story. So I'm glad the Bakeneko shout-out felt satisfying rather than repetitive, because yeah, this one is her recounting the event she experienced in the previous song. And I only played with "winners write history" as a famous quote, wasn't aware if the source was relevant, but thanks for letting me know.
This is so bouncy and really nice to hear and sing along with And it comes so... naturally I can't even imagine hearing this theme anymore without the lyrics, this was so good
Hehe, thanks for noticing~ When I caught the similar melody, I knew I wanted to reference it -- and I was just a little disappointed that Komachi's song hadn't used a more iconic-sounding line on that part. But it worked out anyway.
This is quite possibly my favorite of your covers of all time. I only recently discovered it on your Tumblr and i was wondering why it hadnt been uploaded to the channel yet, but now i understand... The smug edits mustve taken a lot of time, but definitely worth the wait! :D Kudos to Lori-Hime.
I can't say I give a shit about anything Renko/Maribel-related like the rest of the Touhou fanbase REEEEEALLY seems to, but these duets of yours are definitely amazing enough to be very likeable. Your voices are just lovely to listen to in Touhou themes~
Hmmm...So because you set the topic as "Gaming" and the word "unturned" appears in the lyrics in the description, UA-cam realized that the game must be Unturned! Machine learning is so fascinating XD
No other reason than that I realized the melody was borrowed from it. Also, vague references to the main series Touhou games are the Sealing Club's specialty, with them being on the border of knowledge of Gensokyo. I'm glad people noticed!
Hey Lyrica, something I've been wondering for a while now is, where did you get so much philosophical and scientific knowledge and insight? I've been listening to your stuff for a decade now, and the wisdom in your songs often runs really deep. Did you major in some scientific/philosophical field? Or have you just always done your own research? Or, do you just read a lot? 😅Either way, I hope all is well and we're all warmly waiting for your return whenever you're ready for it! :)
Ahh, I'm so sorry... I try really hard to sound as smart as these students, and I'm glad it's working, but I actually know very little about physics. I wish I did, because I think it's a really, really fascinating field with ridiculous relevance to, like, everything. I always enjoy hearing about physics/astronomy news because of Renko but I hardly understand what I read. That "work" formula was something I just happened to remember from high school science, heheh. Still proud of it, though, so thank you. (And I guess being interested in it counts as being "into" it.)
Lyrica Live im a sophmore in high school and i hope to have a career in theoretical physics... my favorite song of yours that is physicsy is Schroedinger's baneko... I love Schroedinger's cat and how it is about quantum entanglement... All of the "new" physics is interesting to me... But when I first heard Schroedinger's baneko, I was fangirling over it so much because of the physics, the good beat of touhou, and the awesome singing in it. Good work! Hope to hear more excellent songs in the future!
Could someone explain to me line "strayed far from home on a quantum scale"? Far in a quantum scale could mean very near, but I can't see how it fits here...
I just realized she's talking about the cat in Schrodinger's Bakeneko
oh ya mean Chen?

I just found this song, and the "Force times distance, get to work!" line coupled with Renko's smirk, is just adorable.

I have only ever heard this but was just re-listening to an old playlist and found this, it is a really nice flow.
I love so much the songs featuring Merry and Renko but by far this one and Hiroshige n°36 are my favorites.
Keep doing such a great job !
You're honestly so incredible with lyrics. It's a real pleasure.
Smug Renko is the best Renko!
In all seriousness, this is one amazing duet!
This is probably my favorite song you have done so far. It resonates so well, and I love the conversations during the song.
“There are many more” line sounds like your higan retour riverside view cover!
