I like "forced proximity" as a trope, not by kidnapping but due to circumstances. For me as a reader and writer, it's always interesting how (ideally: very different) people react when they have to deal with each other.
I subverted the 'mentor sacrifice himself to make the main protagonist grow and learn to stand on his own' trope by actually having my mentor sacrifice himself to save the day, and instead of the main protagonist to get better and empowered, he becomes worse and leaves everything that reminded him of his mentor behind for good! He eventually gets better but after he battles his inner and outer demons.
I love tropes. It's an easy way to help readers casually understand characters and concepts but that doesn't mean it's lazy either or that you can't twist or spice them up a little. I have fun with them personally. Opposites attract Frenemy rivals Power of friendship Villain teams up with the hero to fight a worse villain Redemption arcs Hero defeats the antagonist by making them their friend The good guys always prevail Good and wholesome hero is actually just a really good person (Superman) Hero gaining a willpower second wind at the 11th hour As you can tell I don't like to write depressing stuff. Personally i've dealt with gritty and edgy bs irl enough as it is.
Exactly. They're like shortcuts for the readers to understand parts of your story. You just want to be judicious in their use and know when you need to stand them on their head!
I need to asee a list of tropes. I had a little look at aquery submission form the other dau and one feiod in the form simply said " Tropes?" I can't even think of any as yes, they did used to have a negative connotation so I avoided bothering learning about them. And I thought they were jainly for Romance books. I wish these hoops to jump through would stop popping up. Because in that form dfeild , I just want to be honest and say " I don't know of any as don't know much about them"
Often when I can't think of what to write, I go on TV Tropes and look up the tropes of all my favourite works. Whatever they all have in common become the tropes that I try to hit within my own work. So to that end, I find tropes very useful. Trope =/= Cliché

I definitely want to write a farm kid fights the dark lord story one day. I know those are almost cliches now, but I do love them
Something that impresses me is her presentation of arguments. She balances both pros and cons. It feels like reading an argumentative essay!
The Christie-esque whodunnit drawing room reveal is a trope I'd like to subvert.

Thank you so much for all of the work you put into your content! It's helped me a lot on my journey of writing!

I like to add twists to tropes.
