The SE Electronics Pencil microphone is one of those mics that I really trust. It has a low self noise and a sound that sounds way bigger than it actually is.
It's great for recording instruments and is capable of taking very high levels of sound, so you could stick it say, in the bell of a clarinet or trumpet and two SE8's in stereo, sound even better when recording small groups of people.
I used a pair for recording a piano concert live and managed to record a nice stereo image of the piano notes so that they spread across the soundstage beautifully for a video that I made for a kiddies concert and very little had to be done to the sound file in post.
These aren't a 'budget' microphone, but I'd say at the bottom end of the middle priced mics. It's performance is really reliable and even in my poor sounding front room, it sounds OK. The electric piano at the start was recorded just by plonking the mic down on the floor, on a mini tripod pointing at the piano. It wasn't even close to the speakers and I was in the box room. Even in there, it could be rescued with ease in post.
A really good pencil mic and worth considering paying the extra for if you are looking for something that works well in most situations. It has a pretty even sounding frequency response (like many pencil mics have actually) and it is nice and sensitive so doesn't need massive amounts of gain when recording.
