Full version of Ike and Tina Turner on Hollywood Palace in 1968. Features Sammy Davis Jr. They perform "You Got What You Wanted" & "We Need an Understanding".
I love the rawness and power of Tina's voice. Even though her voice is clearly female she has the edge of a male singer. You can just feel all the grit!
I don’t think people understand how fabulous Tina really is from a production and styling standpoint! She and Ike raised the bar!!! The wigs and wardrobe was truly forward and expensive asf! Tina has been a top dollar performer since day 1
@@coltanddj He was probably "the best" at the time. They always are. She even said herself that she forgave him, she realized he was sick. He was good to her at one time and he got her career in motion, but that's it. No more, no less. Keep it moving .... What a woman!
I know right? I was thinking the same thing. I really liked it though. Rap wasn't new like everyone thought it was. It came from the roots he was singing it in....JAZZ, and religious chants
"Rap" is not really a new thing. "Rap" literally just means a talk or a speech, but long before hip hop it often referred to a rhymed and/or rhythmic speech. You can see Muhammed Ali pulling that stuff off in interviews and press conferences, and it was a big thing in "blaxploitation" movies of the 70's. What happened in the Bronx in the mid- to late 70's was that during dance parties - at which a DJ would play old funk records, preferably with a good ear for the best breaks and loop them - an MC (Master of Concert) would introduce the DJ, often in the form of a rap, *just like Sammy Davis Jr. is doing here.* In other words, a rhymed rhythmic presentation - a *rap* - was already a long established form of expression when hip hop got started.
I never realized that Sammy Davis was the ultimate entertainment who was really creative; (singing , dancing, comedian, acting, playing music, as well as poetry/ rapping) and multitalented, Ike and Tina was funky and stylish. Tina was maybe was one of the first to to dance, with an eclectic voice. Nice video.
This performance came to my mind when news of her death came in. Some people just got the IT factor and she definitely had it plus more. Rest in Peace to the incomparable Tina Turner #QueenofRock&Roll
She sang this song like a woman who is going through "it". Not past tensed but right NOW! I went thru the same thing: he got me, mow he treating me like he don't want me. The worse feeling in the world. Thankfully she found peace on this Earth and I'm pretty sure she is in Heaven too.
Tina and her million dollar legs yall know she had a contract on her legs insurance or something to that effect they were famous all by themselves. im convinced that this is who bey is inspired by. tina was by far the greatest female performer in her time love her energy
Besides the incredible vocals, Tina was in charge of the dance routines too, and worked with the Ikettes to put them together. These were very hard working ladies who took their responsibilities seriously. Notice how great they looked; the act was beyond exciting but never cheap. There is a difference. It already was evident at this point Tina would become one of the greatest stars in show business.

I don´t mean any disrespect on your taste in music...there are lots of fans of Miley and Bieber despite negative comments on both...we all have different taste . I wouldn´t want a society where a select few choose what they want all the rest of us to see and hear (like in North Korea). I can´t imagine your idol Miley singing a Tina Turner track just as good or better because her style is totally different. The other way around, Tina wouldn´t sound good doing Miley material. Anyway, that´s your opinion and you are entitled to it.
Nobody, and I mean nobly brings the thunder like Tina Turner. She puts so much heart and soul into her music its almost threatening, but in a good way. Just brilliant
Fantastic performance! Ike and Tina Turner were the real deal. One of the best live acts of all time. Tina was a force and Ike cultivated her talent. B.B. King said Ike was the best bandleader he ever saw. The Ikettes don't get enough credit. Those ladies had to keep up with Tina and looked pretty doing it!
Thank you! I was reading through the comments til I found one that highlighted Ike. I don't doubt that he was abusive. But he was also a musical genius! RIP!
