    • @Rasbiff
      @Rasbiff 6 років тому +28

      "Rap" is not really a new thing. "Rap" literally just means a talk or a speech, but long before hip hop it often referred to a rhymed and/or rhythmic speech. You can see Muhammed Ali pulling that stuff off in interviews and press conferences, and it was a big thing in "blaxploitation" movies of the 70's.
      What happened in the Bronx in the mid- to late 70's was that during dance parties - at which a DJ would play old funk records, preferably with a good ear for the best breaks and loop them - an MC (Master of Concert) would introduce the DJ, often in the form of a rap, *just like Sammy Davis Jr. is doing here.* In other words, a rhymed rhythmic presentation - a *rap* - was already a long established form of expression when hip hop got started.

    Besides the incredible vocals, Tina was in charge of the dance routines too, and worked with the Ikettes to put them together. These were very hard working ladies who took their responsibilities seriously. Notice how great they looked; the act was beyond exciting but never cheap. There is a difference. It already was evident at this point Tina would become one of the greatest stars in show business.

    Two of the Ikettes here remained with the revue, off and on, right up to the end, particularly Esther Jones, in the shortest wig on the right. Lejune Richardson can also be seen in many clips from the 70's in a blonde wig. She was also backup to Tina for many years of Tina's solo career.

      Yeah, I would imagine it was probably a shared responsibility of the folks doing the moves. This was part and parcel of how a lot of groups did it back then as all around entertainers. Tina upped it a notch, of course. But pre-MJ/Janet troupes of background dancers that needed to have a choreographer, the Temptations, The Pips, and the like all had some surprisingly intricate choreo while singing.
