How to Tie Dress Shoes | Berluti Knot Method
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 вер 2024
- Kirby Allison, the founder of The Hanger Project, teaches you how to tie your dress shoes using the Berluti knot. Shoelaces have a disproportionate effect on the overall look of a pair of shoes. A poorly tied pair of laces will not uphold the formal dress look that you want in a well-polished pair of shoes. Follow these simple steps to easily elevate your shoe’s appearance in a matter of minutes.
1:58 Step 1: Twist your laces once
2:05 Step 2: Form 2 bunny ears
2:12 Step 3: Cross the 2 bunny ears
2:23 Step 4: Take the right bunny ear and the end of the left lace
2:31 Step 5: Push both of those through the hole at the bottom
2:55 Step 6: Repeat the step above with the left bunny ear and the end of the right lace
3:15 Step 7: Pull the bunny ears to tighten

The story of The Hanger Project: www.kirbyallis...
Wow, I feel like I haven’t really been living my life. This changes everything.
*:D*
Agreed
I finally understand. This means something. This is important.
I’ve been using this method to tie my shoes for a while and everyone said it was “wrong” or “weird”. Glad to know it has a name to it. Thank you for the video!
SAME!!!
Everyone will make fun of you but at the end you will be the one laughing when the knot still hasn't come undone after a year of wearing it!
Who are these peasants
For anything; if it works for you, nobody can tell you it's wrong...
Because it is an ugly knot
I don't know how I found my way to this side of UA-cam but I'm an outdoorsman, avid hunter, and a 3rd generation Farmer. I tried this just to try it and it's the only knot that has not come untied yet. And is easy get off. I don't like knots that take a lot to untie or come untied. I'm constantly around fast spinning objects and plenty of things that can take my leg from me if I do get my boot stuck or catch a lace flowing in the breeze. a simple yet tough knot and this is the one. I've used it for about 3 months now and will never go back! Thank you!
My father taught me to tie my shoes. This was what he taught me and my brothers. 60 years ago.
he taught you this knot?
@@louiscyfer6944 yes
Do he teach you how to tie this knot?
a very wise man, your dad. 😉
Damn boomers
Good camera angles, good practical demonstration... I nailed it first time... and repeat and repeat. Really easy thanks to your type of presentation. Thanks Kirby. It is now my favourite shoelace knot.
58 years old. Wish i knew this long ago. Hah!!! Old dog, new tricks. Thanks, Kirby.
This has transformed my shoe-tying life! It does take a few extra seconds to tie, but it wears ALL DAY with never a need to re-tie. I especially appreciate it when wearing shoes with round laces. Bunny Ears!!
Being one who has always double knotted his shoes all his life I'm in deep love with this knot. Stays put, looks great, and is easy to undo. Thank you!
There's a quick and easy (and dirty) version that's basically just doing one side and then tightening the whole thing. It still keeps the knot in place, nothing is going to undo it, but alas, visually it looks like the son that always wanted to do things half way because "it's good enough".
Only recommended if you're in an absolute hurry (going to miss your flight) or if you're tying drawstring shorts, other than that I'd say use the full classy version.
I've never seen this knot before and you did an excellent job of showing how to tie it. Truly small details matter. I plan to start using this knot. Thank you.
I started using this for hiking boots, winter boots and running shoes several months ago after a period of much disentanglement aggravation. The improvement was remarkable.
This knot also is perfect for drawstring pants so that the knot doesn't creat a huge bump. Thank you! I am also using it for my shoes. Your explanation was so clear, this has become an easy knot to do. I think the shorter and stiffer laces make it more difficult than with other laces and strings.
Another great use!
I've been tying knots for a long time and have never seen this one. Well done.
It takes me normally 10 seconds 😁
This is a beautiful knot! I love the symmetry. This knot in conjunction with a clean bar lace really polishes the look of a good pair of shoes.
I have been using this know exclusively for all my laces! Love the neatness and the symmetry.
It just pains me to see men with good looking shoes, but tie their laces with granny knots!
This should be the standard knot that parents teach their kids!
this worked great for my womens dress shoes! I was really struggling with how big other knots looked. This video was super helpful and easy to follow :)
Finally! A dress shoe knot that doesn't come untied!
Well done. You had me choking back tears, remembering my dear departed father, when you started to describe the "rabbit ears and going in the hole". My dad spoke six languages, english was not his first, and used to teach his coworkers down in the gold mine how to tie off a rope using these descriptions .. rabbit go round the hole, rabbit in the hole .. ahhh, who's cutting onions?
Usually using this method. Thanks, it took 10mins of work to get it. Simple, fast, nice.
I just tried this and it’s hands down the best knot I’ve ever used. I wish I knew about this along time ago lol
I like that you showed it three times!
That’s amazing! No more double knotting!
This video quite literally changed my life!
BRAVO KIRBY!! Another great tip from the Hanger Project. Since learning the Parisian knot from your videos I've used it almost exclusively until now. Although more secure than the square knot, the Parisian did tend to slip during the day requiring one to retie it once or twice a day. Not so the Berluti! It holds and holds with no maintenance required, then is undone by a simple pull on the strings! Thank you for yet another great dressing tip.
The Berluti knot is pretty great! I still find the Parisian knot easier to tie, but maybe this is because I have more practice.
odd, this knot is more comfortable on the top of my foot! Thank you!!
That's awesome! I never knew there was more than one way to tie shoe laces. Just bought a new pair of shoes yesterday and that's my new knot. Excellent demo, thanks!
A few years ago I learned this knot from this video, and it's my favorite knot to use since. It NEVER came loose and it looks great!
Actually it's pretty easy. You've demonstrated it well.
exactly what I thought. Just tried it waiting for the train. :)
I know an easier way to tie this knot but it is impossible to describe. I had to be shown. Basically, after you tie the first half hitch you add a motion turning the second half hitch into a full hitch. I have to concentrate to tie a regular shoelace knot now.
@@dbmail545 absolutely, I've been doing this knot as you describe for 57 years, and is MUCH simpler than explained here, good for you! And a Merry Christmas
@@LesliePiper and you, as well!
@@LesliePiper how would i do it like that? Could you please describe it?
Hands down this is the best knot for my shoes. I forwarded to all my contacts and those who tried gave me big thanks.
I taught my girls how to tie shoe laces; now 25/26 years later I shall be teaching them a new way of knotting laces! How cool is that! Thank you ever so much! Great video and explanation.
WOW, what a beauty, and actually quite easy. your instructions were perfect.
I use a knot similar to this to tie my shoes. Instead of taking both the bunny ear and the end through the loop, I just take the bunny ear through. The knot I make looks very similar to this one. I love it, I've never had my shoes come untied ever since I started using this method
I've been using this version for years. Stays tied better than a double knot, really easy to untie
Ah, that's the Ian's Secure Knot. Tied in similar fashion except you only work the bunny ears not the tail ends. Great knot which I use as well.
😂😂
Pulling the two lace ends to loosen the knot is where the magic is. Thanks for teaching this knot!
Thank you sooooo much! This has changed my dress code. Always drying to look dapper and this helped quite a bit.
You keep doing what you’re doing mate. You’re doing good.
For those people commenting that it’s nothing special, you all need to realize not everyone learnt what you’ve learnt. People learn different methods from schools/cities/countries etc. Stop putting a guy down for his ‘ignorance’ when you’re ignorant yourself.
I have tied my shoes like this 2 years ago and they are still on my feet!
😂😂
Perfect testimonials don't exist.
Perfect testimonial:
lol
Four years on, how are ya doin? LOL
Any news about the knot after 5 years. Still on?
I have the same question. Let us know!
It's fascinating how with such a simple modification to the basic knot you get something that dresses so neatly.
This is so much better than double-knotting my boots. Looks better and is faster. Thanks.
Yes. Way better than the double knot. And much, much easier to untie, also!
Thank you!! I randomly came by this video and tried the knot on my boots. I love it!!
You know, I used to just tie a Dubble knot without a bow and sometimes even 3 knots, because the shoelaces always open when I have to run to the bus.
This knot is not only really beautiful, it's also stunningly secure but also so much easier to open at home than the Dubble knot. This changed my life.
What a great tutorial! I often have to re-tie my laces so this method may save me from doing so. Thank you KA.
A new footwear knot and shoe polish is an actual thing. Very educational.
I like Ian's secure knot. A bit easier than this knot but just as secure in my experience. I've never had it come undone on its own except with thick cylindrical laces.
I recognize those prints in the background. A lovely set of a great series.
"Hey Honey, look what I learned from the internet today"
Thanks, excellent knot for my combat/work boots.
RussellRanch 😂😂😂
I watched several video tutorials for this knot and this is the first one for which I succeed ! Finally ! Thank you
Amazing! Glad it helped!
I hope you don't call it "Börluhdi" instead of "Berluti" now. 😁
Always a pleasure to learn something new. Great videos , thank you.
My husband thanks you. He said that he has to re-tie his dress shoes several times a day at work and this has solved that problem.
There are DIFFERENT types of shoe knotts!!! WHAATT!! I learn so much from you @KirbyAllison! Thank you! I am definitely trying this next.
Well , did you lived in desert most of your life?
Pavel Oknowski idiot - you use “Present tense” with “DID”. So it’s supposed to be “Well, did you LIVE in desert most of you life?” Lmao
And to answer your sorry ass - my desert was still better than yours. At least they taught us the correct form of tenses.
This is the solution for my running shoes which alway untighten themselves when running - concretely my Nike Free and my Altra Rivera 2. With this knot no more! AWESOMELY GREAT! Thanks so much!
How does UA-cam know I need a knot upgrade??
$1,000,000 question...
Yes, how does it find out that I’ve been plagued with auto-untying laces lately? Spookily very useful indeed...
They record your daily talk i guess, I remember complaining with my friends about the rounded tough shoe laces getting lose and look wierd with the knot, andI haven't google it yet :| kinda concern tho
Ebit Lagger haha. Wouldn’t be surprised...they know more than they should! 😂😂
Cow Paddle lol
What a wonderful site. I am going to recommend this Berlutti knot to my husband and father, it is very elegant (and yes - a few of us do still notice those subtle grooming points!)
Thanks, Michelle! This is definitely high-level refinement!
If you've tried this a bunch of times following the video and your knot keeps tilting to the side, make sure you cross the RIGHT lace over the left one in the beginning. Then follow the steps as shown in the video. If you cross the left over the right, the knot will tilt to the right.
I wonder if the instructions might benefit from dropping "left" and "right" and substituting the more precise "medial" (ie closer to the centre of the body/"median axis") and "proximal" (ie. farther from etc). Seems like the key for a balanced knot on both shoes is to start by crossing the "outside', or proximal, lace over the "inside", or medial, one.
@@michaelccozens..... The opposite of "medial" (meaning towards the middle or median) is "lateral" (meaning towards the outer side) while the opposite of "proximal" (meaning close, nearby or next to) is "distal" (meaning away or distant). We use this terms in Medicine and Surgery.
Wow!!! Thank You For The Knowledge…Learning Now..👍👍👍
I had a problem with leather laces loosening and coming undone until I used this knot. Thanks.
great, expecially for my moccasins that need a double knot.
The sense of achievement when I got this right was far great than it should have been! 😁👍
I've been doing this all my life. Didn't know it had a name.
THANK YOU for making this video. I really like the look of this knot.
Tutorial starts at 1:58
ZENNology of Everything He also says "baluti"
Thanks.
You need to be at the top.
ZENNology of Everything Because he talks too much about things that dont really matter
i was gonna say, that's useful and all but does it really need to be 8,5 minutes long?
Sporting Berluti knot now. Thanks, Kirby.
I tie my husbands bow tie when we go to formal (black tie) events. I learned that from UA-cam. I did not realise there is also a 'proper' way gents shoes should be tied. Great to learn something useful. Thank you.
Whatever you do, don't let him talk you into tying his shoes also! Although I am sure he enjoys you tying his bow tie, it is really easy to learn. You should show him our video on the subject: ua-cam.com/video/uCkdNFG7sr0/v-deo.html
Did this for my skateboard sneakers, thanks for the video!
Thank you so much! This knot is awesome and will save me a lot of frustration and From having to constantly retie my shoes. I just subscribed to your channel. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! Let us know how you get along with this knot!
Its Great to hear that at last sweet mr, Allison perhaps saved your mental life Sir , I cant imagine how rough time you had before mr Allison decide to unvailed to us SECRET of THE ,, Berluti Knot " ! Congratulations !!!
I am glad I found this video. This knot solved my life long struggle with knots coming loose on my shoes. This is how I tie all of my shoes now.
Very cool and well explained.
One good thing about this (besides being interesting, and neat looking and an indulgence for those ritualizing things like this) is that it uses up more lace, so if your laces are just a little longer than you'd like this might be just the thing. (Thus I have already appointed this knot to a pair with this 'issue')
Really this impressed me almost as much as when I first learned about Ukrainian lacing which I find such a joy to use on lace-up boots)
Also, I gave you a sub. Yay.
We also sell laces in 60, 75, 80, and 120 cm lengths, so we can help you on the shoe lace front. But, yes, this knot does make the ends shorter.
Excellent video. I love how you walked us through the steps 3 times. I will be using this when I take my wife out this weekend.
As for the lace-breaking Murphy's Law, you are spot on.
This is awesome, thank you, your efforts and time are sincerely appreciated.
Let us know when you've tried it out!
@@kirbyallison this is all i have have used for the last year. my laces have never gotten undone. it is not difficult, i am used to it, comes as naturally as a regular knot. when i told my friend that i learned how to tie my shoes, they looked at me very funny.
@@kirbyallison you should tell people that it matters what direction you cross the laces before the knot. if you do it the wrong way, it won't be flat.
I followed this video and made this knot this morning.
I'm going to use this knot in my sneakers.
Iván Egües I wouldn’t do it you’ll *Royally piss off the well dressed 🙈😂*
Clearly explained and demonstrated, it was easy to follow your instructions. I've tied my shoes the same way for forty years, so this knot is a great new technique for a cleaner look. Thanks so much for this!
Using this knot feels like a deeper layer of attention to tying my shoe laces. I bought a nice pair of shoes recently and they deserve to be nicely tied.
This also works well with sneakers. My laces tend to unravel easily.
Of all the things I have learned about classic menswear in the last year, for some reason, this is my favorite. Thanks, Kirby.
Im gonna use this knot on my work boots...the laces always get untied...thanks👍
Josh Ramirez lol
Josh Ramirez your not *well dressed* so you are not allowed sir 🤣
DonutsRYummy if your nuts are not hanging out your pants and you do not wear them in a fashion where 90% of your boxers is on display... You are dressed well
Just use a standard box knot. Wont come untied, no need to double knot. Theres a 30min documentary on shoe tying, Its actually pretty interesting. Search for shoe tying nat geo
Couldn't find it on UA-cam anymore, but it's a going deep episode about shoe tying if you can find it.
Go with the standard shoelace knot, not the granny knot.
This knot has served me very well for all sort of shoes.
Thanks for sharing!
Pro tip- the way you start the knot matters. If the knot isn't sitting quite right try tying the first bit left over right or right over left, the knot should naturally be horizontal and not diagonal.
This absolutely works well. Doesn't come undone throughout the day
This video was a fever dream
Learned a new way of lacing and a new name , thank you
The new name: "Börluhdi" 😂😂😂
I never knew that before.
Thanks for the video.
Thanks...I just learned my new way to tie my laces.
My father taught me this knot and we just used it for high top boots. We cut timber and a reg knot would get pulled out by the brush. That being said what a person wears does not make the person. People are valued by what they do.
morelanmn Do = Tying a Berulti knot.
This is true. However, any man or women can dress nicely after work. I still do. I’m a hvac/r engineer. Still it doesn’t hurt. I still get down and dirty.
Rider of A Pale Horse
Wow, what a stupid lesson to say related to a knot. And its not even true. Its whats in your heart and mind. If u are valued on just what you do, you are probably a nazist.
I only came here cause a comment under a video called „lace your trekkingboots“ … im an forestry worker and go much hiking with my kids and friends. I will tie my shoes at now in this way.
Thank you for your video !! Lovely greetings from lower austria, christopher
1:58 .... Also tldw = standard up until the "bunny goes through the rabbit hole"... The bunny goes with the aglet and then the other bunny and aglet does as well
Just letting you know, this video is still helping out people.
When I found how to tie a full Windsor knot, it changed my life, this will also do that. Why tie shoes any other way?
Thanks for showing from the shoe wearer's perspective. It was a great tutorial.

Thanks. Now I know that this will be my lifetime shoe knot method :) I practiced few times, and it is perfect now!
My servant has been tying my shoes wrong this whole time.
Craig, mine too, can’t get good staff.
That's what dad used to call the 'three thumbs knot' !
Yes, I completely understand the staff issue; mother never quite got it right either, so I had to put her in a home.
It's all good when you don;t know how to tie your own.
lol:):)
Hi Kirby, first of all, I would like to thank you for introducing the Berluti knot. After watching your video for several times. Finally, I managed to get it. Following are my understanding of tying the Berluti knot.
Step one, I twisted the laces twice instead of one.
Step two, form two Bunny ear with a hole bellow. Instead of left over right, I do it right over left, bcos I am right handed.
Step two, grad the right bunny's ear n d left end l squeeze both inside out of d hole below.
Step three, grab d left bunny's ear n d right end, squeeze it outside in to d hole.
Step four, use d two bunny's ear to adjust it kneatly.
Once again, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
This knot was easy to learn, compact and tidy, perfect for my dress shoes AND my work boots
wow, i am suddenly obsessed with this knot. i found it very easy to learn!
good knot, makes all the others knots look bad
I like the use of the phrase "take the everything" in stride. That works curiously well. Nice vid.
That's impressive. But I wear shoes with Velcro straps. What do you have for that?
Velcro? Neanderthal.
greets with fire, Hahahahaaa
@@EVILVIKTOR tie them too
Nice job! Just learned how to do the Parisian knot after learning this Berluti knot...keep up the great work!!!
Awesome!
Took me 15 mins to get hang of it.
Its super durable and parallel.
Thanks project hanger
Yeah. Pretty clumsy at first.
20 years ago when i was 5, this was the first and only tie i learnt to do from my mother.. she said this is all i need to know.
She is right, you can tie any type of shoes with this.
