Someone please tell me why, out of Bruckner's last 3 symphonies (the most highly regarded), the 8th is the least performed. Don't get me wrong, 7 and 9 are good too, but they don't hold a candle to this one.
@@antlereddruid8359 The first three movements are amongst Bruckner's finest works. Better than the 8th easily. And the 7th is Bruckner's best symphony for me.
The last 3 are all magical (I also think 6 impinges on this territory too, a step up from the previous 5 if not quite at the elevated level of the final 3), 7 is just soaring & uplifting beyond words, 8 is giant, heroic, majestic and 9, well 9 just inhabits a World of it's own magic. They're all quite different if unmistakably Bruckner, not sure I can agree that 8 is way above 7 & 9 though.
Saw him conduct the LA Philharmonic about 2 years ago. He walked onstage with a cane and just tossed it to ground and straight away to Mahler Symphony 2.
Metha is the perfect conductor. He was asked about his background. He said that his father was the perfect father for his profession. His father was a conductor. Asked what his mother was, Mehta replied "a conductor of course". It is in the breeding, you see. :)
Was listening to this recording on Spotify. Thought I screwed up my speakers. Why are the trumpets coming from the left of the stage? Now I see why. I've never seen an orchestra configured like this.
For Bruckner symphonies (especially the last 3) this brass configuration is quite common: trumpets on the left, horns (and Wagner tubas) on the right and the low brasses at the centre.
[useless trivia] This excerpt from Bruckner's 8th symphony was used in one of the trailers for the anime series "Licensed by Royalty". The series is not bad, but it is a little muddled by not making a commitment to either a fun, campy "Avengers" (with Steed and Mrs. Peel), or a gritty "Secret Agent Man" atmosphere. At the time, none of the show's fans recognized the music, but found it compelling, nonetheless. [/useless trivia]
Yep. I was there and saw him at the Proms in August 1992 just the night before the Europrom. I have never seen Mehta, but obviously he is more well known than Wand, due to the three tenors concerts in the World Cup.
Could someone tell me what device the trumpet player has mounted to his instrument at 0:45 ? Is it for intonation because parts of the symphony are too loud for him to hear himself properly?
Is it just a Mehta thing to double the tuba part? Those who listen to Uncle Gene’s recordings know the LA Phil Planets recording with Bobo and Tommy Johnson doubling the same part…curious.

Thanks for the hint that this gadget might be an electronic tuner, although I have never seen the use of such a thing by brass players of orchestras famous or not so famous. By the way the brass section is somewhat inflated: 4 trumpets (3 in the Bruckner score) and 2 tubas (1 in the Bruckner score). I don't think there is a need to overpower the brass section in Bruckner.
This is a little feistier, a little crispier than the Thielemann version! Albeit it lacks a bit of the deep romantic pompousness that the Thielemann version displays.
Well, think about it. Music is auditory, right? When one uses and electronic tuner they are training their eyes rather than their ears. It should not matter whether it is considered "unprofessional" or not. Who cares? What does matter is I believe musicians do themselves a disservice when they overuse an electric tuner.
Never rated Mehta conducting Bruckner. Not a touch on Karajan's last recording of the eighth live, or Wand for that matter. He is pretty poor with Mahler too.
Try Bruckner's Fourth with Mehta conducting LA Philharmonic. Recorded decades ago, but IMO above all Karajan, Solti etc (although both are usually my preferred ones for Bruckner). Bonus: american orchestral sound adds some unusual, nostalgic-movie-like-magic flavour to this music.
Don't get me wrong, Mehta is obviously held as a famous and well-known conductor, but his conducting, as far as it can be seen in this little snippet, is crap. That is not conducting....I wonder they can even play with this, maybe only because they are so common with each other
God daaaaaamn. I paid for my whole seat and only used the edge.
Clever joke 😏
Same 😂
aha, here as well
I’m a bass trombonist and I’ve played this in band before and it’s the definition of how people picture trombone being played!

This is how brass is supposed to sound.
Yes. This here is the benchmark
All brass must be at least this good or it goes back in the oven.

I like listening to Bruckner, ...and so do my neighbours 😁
Mine comes round to complain, or to hear it better.
That is most definitely a “2010” comment
what on earth ois there to dislike about this marvellous performance??
You mean 17?
Now, there're 28. They're enemies of good music or just too critical (I must admit that Celidabiche is the best).
@@lindildeev5721 respectfully disagree, Celibidache just wrings every drop of drama and tension out of the music by playing it woefully slowly..
Probably just sad they don’t get to hear the entire symphony! 😂
Or they are trombone players that somehow think they can do better than Berlin lol
I searched in youtube for "that one Bruckner brass passage". FInally found it!
Is it too loud? Yes. Do I like it? YES.
if the music is too loud, you are too old hahahaha
Brass can never be too loud 😉
Damn right I do
It's not Bruckner if there is still unbroken glass windows after the music ends.
If the brass seems too loud, it's because the rest of the orchestra isn't loud enough.
Someone please tell me why, out of Bruckner's last 3 symphonies (the most highly regarded), the 8th is the least performed. Don't get me wrong, 7 and 9 are good too, but they don't hold a candle to this one.
Maybe for its lenght; this symphony is colossal and occupes an entire schedule, whereas instead a normal schedule includes more than one composition
The 9th lacks a fourth movement. Had it gotten that it would probably have been even better

There is no one like Bruckner. It's that simple.
Sometimes, you just have to CRANK it!

Excited to see Mehta conduct Berlin Phil for Bruckner 8 this year again!
Hey Berliner Philharmoniker, is that Heiko Triebener from Bamberg Symphony Orchestra playing the F tuba alongside with Alexander von Puttkamer?
You're absolutely right, that's Heiko Triebener.

Awesome. Must be like the best tuba setup you can get anywhere. That's why I love you, Berlin Philharmonic! :)

Bravo Brass BerlinPhil. Congratulations Sir Zubin Mehta. Greetings from Brazil.

There is no more spectacular opening of ANY movement in ANY symphony by ANY composer. And this performance is flawless( of course- it's Berlin..)
This is the piece with which Mehta started his recording career, and he's still pretty good with it. His Wagner (The Ring) is also good, which fits.
I wonder why there are 2 contrabass tubas?
