I started doing these about 3 weeks ago. Now I have an obsession. It's so fun and free... I always feel like I have to make my art pretty for others... but I love the simplicity of gestures. I agree with starting with the torso, that helps alot. I do the same thing with eyes, head angles (just focusing on perspective of the face- no details), And hands.
Thank you so much for posting this! I think one of the hardest struggles for 100% self-taught artists like me is simply that we don't know what hard work and good practice looks like. I never knew about this resource or this level of speed drawing. Usually I get one sketch done every 10 minutes, so one small page filled every hour-ish. This motivates me to get more done, faster!
These are such great tips. A long time ago you helped me during a live stream to give more natural movement to a character. I greatly appreciate you and your art. ❤️ thank you for making these videos!
Awesome video! Starting with the torso makes a lot of sense as that tends to be the body's center of mass. Also thanks for talking about reference lines. I have always struggled to make joints line up and i realize it is my lack of reference lines.
It explains the basics of drawing well. It's a very helpful video. The delicate brush touch seems to be alive. large. I was surprised at the planning work.
Hi REIQ. I have been doing figure drawing intensively for the last month. I was struggling a lot with it and feeling frustrated. Your video has enlighten me in how you build the figure. I have seen a lot of videos and instructionals about this but your video made it click in my head. I would really love to see more videos like this. It is really informative to me to draw the thing and later see how you solve it. Sigue así hermano!
Thanks for sharing this O: I have been doing 1 minutes gesture daily for around 2 weeks to improve my drawing efficiency and i still far away from capable to capture the flow of the whole figure movement Lately im trying to use something like "bean method", and i think it definitely good for capturing torso movement However sometime i got a problem with finding torso lean and twist without contour line, and capturing shoulder/hip position while maintaining flow is another problem It seems ur way of drawing by starting from ribcage -> hips -> legs -> shoulder+arm -> head is pretty effective especially with overall shape simplification I'll try this way of gesture myself and hopefully it'll improve my gesture Thanks again for sharing this video
For those with less understanding of gesture and form, would you suggest more time on each drawing, say 120 seconds, or just a greater number of 60 second drawings?
I think that really depends on what you hope to gain the most from gesture drawing. If you wanna focus more on simplifying the form and drawing faster, more 60 secs. If you're hoping to increase your visual library and improve at anatomy, more 120 secs. And as you get a better feel for gesture drawing and can complete the drawings faster, you can pull the time frames either way. I personally aim to achieve both, so I go from anywhere as short as 15 seconds per drawing. I don't have a ton of time to dedicate to art studies, so my long ones are usually 20-30 minutes, but I hope to extend that when I have more time.
check a channel called love life drawing he has a video where he goes in depth on the stages of improving drawing. As an art student I can tell you that short duration drawings say 30 seconds, which is actually a lot, are done to simplify your drawing and focus on gesture. He had classes where we did 5 second drawings for an hours it's also a great way to warm up because you ignore detail. Longer drawings say one minute to five follow the same rules as 5 second drawings you start with the gesture but you now have more time to ad detail. The detail of your drawing depends on what you focus on, what i mean by that is that if you are learning anatomy you will focus on lets say 5 minutes in getting first the correct gesture, then de proportions, then the focus of your study so focus only on the arms, face, head, feet, legs, drapery, light, etc. This way you take big steps forward on a single subject and helps you greatly when you do longer illustrations like 30+ minutes. Hope that helps you.
In the class that helped me greatly improve my gestures, we started class with twenty 10 second figures, ten 20 second figures, then for the most of the rest of class we did 1 and 2 minute poses (and sometimes 5 min depending on the day/ if we got a lesson more on form) Our class was 3 hours long and twice a week! So I would say for gestures 10-30 seconds is all you need. For form, 2 minutes should be plenty, 5 is getting into anatomy and shading. Sounds intense and really fast, but once you get used to the speed, 1 minute will start to feel too long for just a gesture.
You can actually ,an consiously focus what you feel.Draw what you feel not what you see.You need some conscious effort at the beginning so that it ll get automatizated. Also, check Glenn Vippu drawing videos on yt,analyze each stroke he does, listen to him pay attention also check Glenn Vippu drawing demo on Proko,he explains his method more in depth.
Nice ! Do you think you can make a video on how to properly setup brushes on photoshop, or explain how yours are done ? I can't get my hand on something that suits me, and I don't find many useful videos about that.
this video came at the perfect time i have been practicing gestural drawings lately i have one suggestion/request that i have been strugling to understand is how do you draw people from real life like on a bus or coffe shop if they are always on the move you still seem to do an amazing job of DRAWING PEOPLE from REAL LIFE its that something only professonals can do??? and if you can pleeeese make a video explaing/showing how you do that
You need to learn to see better.Read Drawing on the right side of the brain ,search a pdf for it,follow the exercices, you ll get better. Also ,speed is very important too.

Hey, sorry in advance! I know enough Spanish to understand your question, but not enough to answer in Spanish. I hope you are able to understand my answer! For studying anatomy, you want to spend more time per drawing. I usually warm up with 1 minute drawings, then work my way up to 20-30 minute ones. It gives you more time to focus on the bone and muscle structure underneath. 1 minute, 2 minute, and 5 minute drawings I feel are best for more general practice and focusing on simplifying the form. I think it's most useful to do both if you have time, though. This is what I usually do in one sitting: 10 1-minute drawings, 5 2-minute drawings, 2 5-minute drawings, 1 10-minute drawing, 1 20-minute, 1-30 minute. I still use this guide even if I have less time. I just stop wherever I need or want to.
most of images are sexy as hell! and full of life if u guess what i mean.. and you capture them in 1 minute, so do u realise how much talent and posibility of joy u have? who knows how many ppl are dreaming drawing skills u got ...
My issue when i draw is I want to understand why. I can’t help myself. Even if I do a decent gesture and I start refining and it looks ok, I just don’t trust myself that it looks right. So I try and map out the skeleton, and I start to edit the gesture to better fit the skeleton and so on and it ends up looking worse. Not only that, but I end up finding even more flaws in my original drawing that I try and fix but nothing ever works. So I just end up spending 3-4 hours on just trying to get proportions and anatomy right and trying to see the skeleton through my artwork but it ends up becoming a failure. And I know it’s because I don’t know anatomy and the skeleton correctly but I don’t know how to teach myself. I know the skeleton bones and shape but I have no clue how they bend and twist. Same with the muscles and body parts. I’ve downloaded anatomy drawing apps but they don’t show folds in the muscles or anything. Maybe I’m too analytical about this stuff. Im a stats major after all but I hate it. And this process makes me lose confidence in any drawing I try and do that isn’t a face.

Gran video! Una pregunta: ¿Cuánto tiempo recomendarias practicar y estudiar al día Anatomía y/o dibujo en general?
Hey, sorry in advance! I know enough Spanish to understand your question, but not enough to answer in Spanish. I hope you are able to understand my answer!
For studying anatomy, you want to spend more time per drawing. I usually warm up with 1 minute drawings, then work my way up to 20-30 minute ones. It gives you more time to focus on the bone and muscle structure underneath.
1 minute, 2 minute, and 5 minute drawings I feel are best for more general practice and focusing on simplifying the form.
I think it's most useful to do both if you have time, though. This is what I usually do in one sitting:
10 1-minute drawings, 5 2-minute drawings, 2 5-minute drawings, 1 10-minute drawing, 1 20-minute, 1-30 minute.
I still use this guide even if I have less time. I just stop wherever I need or want to.
