N.I.B. is a reference to the drummer, who had a beard at the time that “looked like a pen nib” and it’s an inside joke for the band. As for the lyrics, the song is about the devil falling in love and deciding to change completely and become a good person for the sake of his lover.
I had to double-check, but you're completely right about the meaning. I always thought it was a cautionary tale about how the devil tricks and seduces people with sweet lies while demanding the utmost obedience. First person perspective is always a hard artistic choice to make when speaking out against something, because people automatically take things literally.
I know , just like how they see the title for the song suicide solution... They instantly think it's for commiting suicide when it's a sarcastic plea against it.
Interesting Black Sabbath fact: their first advertisement in the rock magazines was a half page completely black with only one sentence. Didn't say anything about Ozzy, it only read: "Black Sabbath - louder than Led Zeppelin."
Rumor went around that it was short for Nativity in Black. It was actually based on a joke that Bill Ward had a beard like a Pen Nib. The song was about Lucifer falling in love with an oxymoron. Welcome to the 1970s.
They wrote dark music to stand apart from the pack . When first they got together , their practice spot was near a movie theater . Their name comes from the title of a Boris Karloff horror movie . They liked the vibe and began writing horror songs .
don’t forget their previous name was ‘earth’ and when getting booked they would get mixed up with another band lmaoo. geezer said the looks on the faces when they had to play at those shows were like church boys in chicago
In the rock/metal community black Sabbath is considered the top of the top of the mountain and even the blueprint of hard rock and metal. (Ozzy years) 🏆
You can almost say that not only did Black Sabbath help invent the final development of Heavy Metal that so many metal bands have come to be inspired by but they also were sort of the first Christian metal band 😂😂
My friend is a vicar/priest and loves Black Sabbath, so don't take their lyrics seriously. In fact, because of their name and lyric content, they used to attract a lot of occult fans. They were asked by some satanists to play at stonehenge, Ozzy told them to f**k off. He told one group who invited the band to black masses that "the only spirits I'm interested in are whiskey and vodka". There are lots of stories about Satan in the bible and no one says "I'm not going to read the bible any more". This song is simply about Satan falling in love and trying to tempt her, much like us humans do. If you really want to know what Black Sabbath were about.....the classic song War Pigs says it all......anti war, anti violence.
I just started reacting to Black Sabbath!you have no idea how excited I am to see my fav reactor check this out!! Please do a Black Sabbath marathon!!!
No this is not the kind of thing you would find on a jukebox. This is way too hard for most of the bars back in the day. This was at home on your vinyl! Or at your buddies house, or in your dad’s collection! We would all hang out and get our mind right and listen to Sabbath! They are definitely a jam!
The song is about Satan falling in love. It's a humorous take on Satan falling in love. N.I.B. means "Nativity in Black," which is a reference to the birth of the antichrist. Supposedly, the title has nothing to do with the content of the song, according to Ozzy and Iommi
Pen "nib". Others tried to impart their own ideas. Named after Ward's beard. They just put a period after each letter as if they were initials for something. Basically, a joke.
LMAO --- integrity is standing firm in what you believe in my friend. But please do more Black Sabbath - they are the quintessential and original metal band.
Black Sabbath was a blues/Jazz based rock band named Earth. One day they were standing outside the rehearsal space that was across the street from a movie theater. There was a line of people waiting to get in to see the Boris Karloff movie, "Black Sabbath" Either Geezer or Tony said, "Isn't it weird how people line up to get the shit scared out of them?" They decided to write horror themed music, and the band Black Sabbath was born. People don't get mad at Halloween or Friday the 13th because you know it's art for entertainment.
When he said "Playing guitars already" on a bass solo (the solo is named Bassically) I laughed. Also, in the 70s era Black Sabbath, Ozzy was famous for "riding the guitar" with his vocals, if you want a banger by them where he doesn't do that, might I suggest War Pigs, Black Sabbath (yes, a song named after the band as well as an album), or Children of the Grave.
I love Ozzy. Happy to see this here. You should check out Black Sabbath War Pigs. Still a relevant song. But I'm shocked that there is nothing about Chris Cornell on this channel. No solo stuff, no Soundgarden, no Audioslave. He is considered one of the best singers in the history or rock. So much talent in that one dude. I’ve never heard anyone not enjoy him. Cornell has something for everyone in his vast catalog. His voice is one that was legendary and he is so missed.
This Song Is about If The Devil met a Woman and Falls in Love. He's offering Everything to Her All by His Seal. By falling in Love with Her, he turns Good.
React to Black Sabbath After Forever. It is the first heavy metal angelical song. After they were invited to play for a bunch of satanist they wrote it to let them know where they stood on that. Got to remember they were 4 Catholic boys.
‘Juke joint’ is old-fashioned terminology, but it’s got style. Today they’d just call it a pub, a club, or maybe a billiard hall. I still say ‘juke joint’. It’s funny you should say that, though, because 20 + years ago between the ages of 18 and 23 I used to play this and the Doors’ ‘Roadhouse Blues’ all the time on the jukebox in my favourite place to make money and drinks credits playing 9-ball. On bad nights, everyone had to suffer through my listening to the Replacements. (I jest; the Replacements were one of the greatest underground bands of the 80s and early 90s, but they were known to be the alcoholic’s best friends. Their songs ‘Hold My Life’ and ‘If Only You Were Lonely’ were my favourite tunes when I’d had a lousy 12 hours (+) at work, and on top of that I was playing pool very badly, and losing money. I just felt lonely and low, all around, so I’d go up to my favourite bartender, order the smokiest, peatiest single malt Scotch they served, which was my signal to her that I was depressed and self-flagellating. She was a sweetheart, so she’d pull the plug on the jukebox if there were under a certain number of people in the pub and play my favourite Replacements tunes on the bar’s own PA system. Also, about every third drink was on the house, and she would hang round at chat with me till I fel roughly human again. She was an absolute darling. Anyroad…I’m off-topic. Pardon me; I’m crippled, now, and haven’t much of a life, so I love to tell stories from my youth, when I was actually a kind of a micro-celebrity in the circles in which I ran. My unmedicated ADHD makes the problem much worse, but ADHD meds-which are all, basically, crank-make my muscles spasm and twitch, which causes a lot of unpredictable pain against which I can’t guard miself. Again, I’m off track. The point is, I’ve heard it more it billiard halls and juke joints than even on classic rock radio, even when I didn’t play it miself.
Ozzy Osbourne said that Black Sabbath' drummer Bill Ward had a beard like a "pen nib"... and was often called 'nibby' as a joke... They decided to call the song 'N.I.B.' and of course, their fans obsessed over the meaning of the letters and came up w/ 'Nativity in Black'... Geezer Butler (bass) said he wrote the lyrics about a fictional scenario about the devil falling in love w/ a woman ... and has to have her. Christian groups freaked out about Black Sabbath's associations w/ 'Lucifer' and 'Satan' on the 1st album in 1970 and blacklisted Black Sabbath ... The band always maintained that the only time satan was mentioned was as a warning about getting involved w/ 'the dark side' 😈 Led Zeppelin also got targeted by religious groups because of guitarist Jimmy Page being fascinated w/ black magic and the works of notorious British satanist Aleister Crowley... but Zeppelin never even mentioned satan in their lyrics.
The proper way to enjoy music of this era is with vinyl. In my highschool years, I would play my father's copy of the Paranoid album through the home theater system and let the neighbors enjoy it too. I think the volume was set to 11. Iykyk.
The lead singer of Black Sabbath’s nickname is the prince of darkness. So he went really into that aspect. However had one of the best voices for rock music. Also if you don’t know the lead singers name it’s Ozzie Osbourne.
1:00 that's a 4 string bass guitar, not a 6 string. That is at the beginning/intro of N.I.B. = (Nativity In Black) by Black Sabbath. Oxxy's voice sounded a lot different bacj then... Black Sabbath was considered by most to be the 1st Heavy Metal band. Tony Iommi on guitar was what made that band
I also suggested that lol. Sabbath is my favorite band of all time and I think that's their best beginner song. The change ups are absolutely insane and keep casual listeners involved
You looked stressed at the end. Relax. Sabbath excelled at telling stories that no one else did. Geezer (a good Catholic boy) thought about fallen angels and stories of them mating with humans. Well the devil is a fallen angel. I wonder what his love song would sound like. They used a blues sound in keeping with southern style that often referred to the devil and temptation.
If you're creeped out on the "lucifer" name, just know this was a love song for the "dark one." Rest assured, the band is not in to darkness. Give their "after forever" song a listen before you drop them - - it will change your mind.
fun fact in the intro where it sounds "different" and you said you like them guitars already its actually a bass guitar and the bassist for black sabbath is geezer
That song is a stretch for a reaction, since the reactor is probably religious. NIB was a perfect example here, and only furthers the myth of Rock as satanic.
The song is about the lucifers Tempting Embrace, or if you want to be Hyperbolic, the licentiousness of man. Note how the song is alluring you the entire time. "Some people say my love cannot be true. Please believe me, my love, and I'll show you." It's a sirens call to a life of perverse immorality that as a species we are drawn to. It was also written to piss off the Judgemental Hypocrits that was the Christian population of the time. As a Christian myself it's one of my favorite Black sabbath songs. Ironic right? But, to be fair, these are things that we should be vigilant of: it may sound alluring but it ultimately is the wrong path.
Nativity in Black. Typical musical standards of the times said, you cannot use the fifth note of the scale. Because it invokes a dark and, sinister feeling. Black Sabbath said... Hold my beer! @@LayedBakDFRmuch like the Netflix show Lucifer.
Well said
It's always refreshing to see that people know that it isn't "nativity in black"
Sabbath was NEVER a “satanic” band. Quite the opposite in fact.
Crazy Train lyrics actually REALLY supports that
People always side-eyed me when I said Black Sabbath was actually a band that stood for love.
I know , just like how they see the title for the song suicide solution... They instantly think it's for commiting suicide when it's a sarcastic plea against it.
Black Sabbath is a band that stood for making great tunes.... & Drugs lots & lots & lots & lots of drugs & alcohol
After Forever. That one surprises everyone.
Interesting Black Sabbath fact: their first advertisement in the rock magazines was a half page completely black with only one sentence. Didn't say anything about Ozzy, it only read: "Black Sabbath - louder than Led Zeppelin."
That "guitar" lead in to the song is Geezer Butler playing the Bass guitar, it's a lead in called Bassically.
Rumor went around that it was short for Nativity in Black. It was actually based on a joke that Bill Ward had a beard like a Pen Nib. The song was about Lucifer falling in love with an oxymoron. Welcome to the 1970s.
The album did list the song as N.I.B. (Nativity in Black)
Was not expecting this 😮💨 first baseline I ever learnt dad loved this song big ups ❤️
Oh, Sabbath?
Try Hand of Doom. It's basically 3 grooves in 1 song. And it's glorious
💯🔥
And an anti drug song! Awesome tune
Hand of Doom is one of my favorites and electric funeral
You are officially my friend.

Yes, Ozzy was drugged out of his mind and bat shit insane, but good lord was he one of a kind. The man is and always will be a legend.

People don't realize this album dropped only 5 months after The Beatles released Abbey Road. Black Sabbath was a GAME CHANGER
You have been hitttttting on the song choices lately!

I always thought NIB stand for Nun Inya Business. lol...for reals...circa 1982 har har har.
Of course i figured it out soon enough.
great great song.

Nativity in black is my fav sabbath song.
Check out the version where Les Claypool is playing the bass guitar.... He's the best I've ever heard play.
NIB - nativity in black

Merry Christmas Happy New Year from Holly from fort Myers Florida and you know this
What does PASS mean?
This is one of my favorites. I dont do karaoke, but I will to this.
Music I grew up with
That was a bass guitar that started off by Geezer butler
The ozzy primus version of NIB is killer as well
There is a live version of this song on Ozzy's live album "Speak of the Devil" but it has a different guitarist as Ozzy was a solo artist at the time.
Someone in the patreon just... bless our brother with "Riders on the storm" or "sultans of swing" alright? He deserves it!👌💪
I would recomend following thhis with "After Forever"".

Mr Geezer Butler on the bass guitar at the beginning. One of the best.
Check out the live in Paris 1970 version. It’s so lit 🔥
Black Sabbath 1968-eternity🤘

i'm not taking lucifer's hand to nowhere, but this is surely an influencial song to all of heavy metal music. good reaction bro
I was told back in the day that NIB stood for Nativity in Black.
Nativity In Black is what N.I.B.stands for.
fun fact in the intro where it sounds "different" and you said you like them guitars already its actually a bass guitar and the bassist for black sabbath is geezer
Nib was a joke with band members goatee it looked like a nib...
Too late LayedBak, you finished the song, you're in the club sir.
black sabbath - god is dead? one of my favourites, ozzy one of very few celebrities i admire, legend.
That song is a stretch for a reaction, since the reactor is probably religious. NIB was a perfect example here, and only furthers the myth of Rock as satanic.
I LOVE YOUR THE BEST

Lot of people here still waiting For All The Dogs reaction
Sabbath is very prophetic way ahead of most truthers
People who seen one of his vids when your scrolling and you go to his channel and check when was the last time they posted
I THINK IF YOU HEAR 'AFTER FOREVER' FROM THE 'MASTER OF REALITY' ALBUM YOUR IMPRESSION OF BLACK SABBATH MAY CHANGE FOR THE BETTER.
Glad to hear that you get it!😊thanks for great comment 👍
You mean that JUKE joint thats like a BOX with music in it. I think it's called a music joint.
This song is actually about the devil falling in love and becoming good for her
I think the story of the devil falling in love is the plot to a Vincent Price movie,if not , it should be.
Check out Sweet Leaf and The Wizard in your own time, Layedbak. Unless Patreon magically makes it happen. 😂
It’s a song of falling in love for the first time for and from Lucifer’s pov…..
The opening riff is played on the bass
Please do Kitchen Sink by Twenty One Pilots! I miss those videos!
Edit: In my opinion it’s one of there most underrated songs.
There's several Black Sabbath "pool hall" songs
It's very similar to Sunshine of Your Love by Cream.
Nativity in Black.
Typical musical standards of the times said, you cannot use the fifth note of the scale. Because it invokes a dark and, sinister feeling.
Black Sabbath said... Hold my beer!
You don't want music to scare people? Well then that's exactly the kind of music we're going to write. And they did, they scared the living s*** out of hippies, baby boomers and, the entire music industry.
They changed the entire face of, heavy metal. With one note, the fifth note of the scale. The dark note.
No one ever does this son😢g and that should be criminal. Lonely is the Word
It doesn't look like any people got the question right N.I.B stands for Nativity in Black
It stands for Nativity in Black
It's warning ⚠️ to all artists
N.I.B stands for Nativity in Black
N.I.B stands for Named In Blood
this song was written conceptually about the devil or satan taking a day off and finding love
If the subject freaks u out, think of it as a WORNING, Satan is a sly one beware his temptations! 😂😂
Its a song about Lucifer falling in Love.
React to Chase and Status Baddadan - some of the best DnB the UK has produced in the last year
Bro Take lucifers hand already 😂😂😂!!!!!😊
