as someone who worked on boats/offshore for many years, I understand the weird feeling it is to see your boat sail away. However, for me it was always a good thing!
Many years ago when I attended the California Maritime Academy, I remember a boats class where the instructor was covering rat guards on tie up lines and when he'd finished, he commented that he didn't see any reason that the rats wouldn't use the gangway like everybody else. Also on the AIS system, if your intent was on harming something, it'd be a handy tool to know where everyone else was in terms of getting in and getting out without risking too much.
Having built my own rat stopping system to keep them off powerlines and climbing onto the house, these are not a very good design alone. They can and will eventually learn to jump over them in time. You actually need to add a round cone shape which is too slippery to grip. Both is best though.
I've worked with the commercial GPS navigation systems on the order of the AIS. We would plug in approximate locations if there's a problem with GPS signals. Most systems need a fairly accurate date/time group to establish the connection. Moreover, you need a connection from several satellites for an accurate position. But, yes, you can manually alter your location.

speaking of unwanted guests, Ive always wondered about how they deal with random people getting on a boat, either to steal things, or maybe as paparazzi trying to get some pics of someone famous in their underwear. I know that marinas have policies that only certain people can be on the pier itself, but often, theres just like a railing separating the two. Getting in would be very easy. Why no rat stoppers aft? AIS is often shut off when entering a harbor, just not to reveal the exact location in the harbor. Technically you can alter your position but normally it's difficult. The position shown is the last known position för Find Ship 18 hours ago. If you look at an online plotter that listen to live AIS signals, you won't see her.
Its very interesting the systems and specs you bring up on these vessels. Id like to know if these pleasure yachts have ice rated hulls? Also id like to know how they perform in heavy seas. I mean those ones where the boat is riding and crashing in massive swells. Somehow those low rear of those boats and all that fancy windows and glass all around those open deck walkways look like they would scoup up lots of water.
Could you explain how the taxes work for where the Yachts are registered? You mentioned about it when that Yacht was registered in London. And what sort of $$ are involved.
Its not just taxes, there are all SORTS of laws that can be inconvenient. US registry in particular can be restrictive. (US Crew, US Captain, USCG safety mandates which are just different than others) They also want US built, but they grant exceptions for that all the time. Imagine needing a new deckhand or cook on a US flagged ship in the Pacific and having to fly an American one in. (you can have a small number of foreign crew, but they have to have right to work in the US)
As Daniel mentions there is a lot more to cost than just sales and registration costs. If you are chartering, you also have to consider VAT rates from the country of register. There is a level of added security if you are a US flagged ship as the US Navy and Coast Guard will sail to your aid, plus you also have access to a number of US territorial Islands that non-US flagged vessels have to jump through hoops to get to. I would argue that is more of something a smaller owner operated/handed yacht would be concerned with than yachts covered on this channel.
Ah, the good ol' fouled propeller. Had that happen 3 times so far underway, twice were lines and the other a sheet of construction plastic and the fun one was at midnight. The guy that was on the other side of me was the one who went after the guy speeding into the marina. I am a pretty big man and this guy was trying to drag me into his fight. The only part of the fight I had was to tell the guy you don't need to come into the marina like that. He apologized to me but when the guy who originally wanted to confront him things didn't go the same. Once they started Fighting we let it go for a couple minutes since these were both grown men and sometimes you just need to stand back. When the guy that was tied up next to me started losing very badly and the guy with no boot manners wouldn't stop That's when we all got involved and pulled them apart. By that time somebody called the police and I walk back to my boat. That guy who owned the marina made both guys leave his marina and ban them for life. After everything calmed down and both boats were gone the owner came down to my boat since we are close friends and asked me what happened. I told him what started all of it so that's when he told all the doc people to start giving out warnings to anyone coming in too fast. That was 3 years ago and I never seen another incident at that particular marina. I'm lucky now that my new boat is a lot larger than most of the boats in the marina we go to and they normally put me somewhere where I'm not near the boat traffic. But when I'm in Florida especially around Miami some of those boats could use mine as a tender.
@@venom5809 no my home water is the Chesapeake Bay right outside of Annapolis Maryland. On a clear day when we leave our Marina if we had South we can see the naval academy within 5 to 10 minutes of leaving the marina. Our DNR are pretty nice guys and girls. They are extremely friendly. I have seen them many times give someone a warning instead of a ticket for something they are out of date on or in some cases did not know what the law was exactly. Here in Maryland if you were born before 1972 or 1973 not 100% sure on the right date but anyhow if you were born after that you must take a safety course and carry the card with you. It's almost like a driver's license but for the water. When we bought our first boat my wife was young enough that she needed to take the course if she ever wanted to navigate or drive our boat. And our oldest son at the time was 12 and he took the class I also did even though under the law I didn't have to. I highly recommend this course for everyone no matter your age. There's plenty of stuff at that time that I did not know. The course does not cost a lot and if I remember you can now take it online. We are thinking about next summer if the world is better by then meaning the virus of course. We want to go other places and we are talking about going up into the great lakes. Myself I'm like you watching where your work space moves. On a side note, saw a serplus Navy underwater sonar tracking vessel, very large that was up for sale. The guy doing walk through was saying how easy it would be to convert. To private world cruise vessel. Being it stayed out at Sea for 6months. It had fuel enough to go around the world. It had a Hospital space ( separate compartment) it had huge A frame rear boom. Small crane with ungodly lift capabilities. It had ROV spot on back deck. Just my DREAM vessel. With the issue of fuel now with these super private vessels. That surplus Navy vessel would not be looking for fuel barge bunkering, in my Humble opinion. My gosh these Millionaires could just use it as a refueled for there super size vessels.
If Marine Traffic coverage is weak in the harbor, it may cause things like you've seen with AIS. They can also turn off AIS and it will show last known position on AIS like you've seen. Marine traffic is a bunch of random volunteer data collectors, so it's coverage can actually be weak for a global monitoring system. AIS can still be seen between boats of course. You'd have to have an AIS receiver to know for sure whether JOY was transmitting rather than use Marine Traffic.
Talking about time off….so many times I would go into town then get on the bus to work when I wasn’t working, or I’d go to town to shop & rush to get on a bus about to leave….then I’d sit there, feeling a complete idiot because I was supposed to be going home. The worst bit was the first bus stop was about half a mile away and there wasn’t an easy or quick way back to the bus station from it 🤦🏼♀️ As stupid as I was I used to teach 😂 on forms, insurance for school trips for example it would have my name on the ‘adults responsible’ list 😂
With regard to the AIS, I don't think it's the vessel doing that. Some areas may have a lack of coverage or in drop signal, so it will report the last position but if you paying attention you will see the ghost of that vessel ahead or for your situation in port.
If you use the paid sat AIS service you will have the updates in real time. More than likely they have an aerial problem & local VHF station is not receiving their data.
I'm curious about the AIS system you pointed out; My career on an Alaska crab boat ended in the mid 1990s, before commercial use of GPS became available (ARPA radar was the most technologically advanced navigation aide we had). I've never seen an EPIRB in any of your videos, are they now extinct ?

DNR, you don’t by chance live in Michigan? Had many many encounters with the DNR over the years when I had powerboats 🚤 😂
@@davidfrank2824 nice story
I love your state don't care for your governor. When I was growing up a good friend of mine was from Michigan and the way he talked about it it sounds like someplace I would like to visit.
Why not rat guards on the electric connection to the yacht to protect from boarding.
I expect they will get round to that eventually - looks like they just arrived from the South of France or Muscat
About 12 years ago we spent about 1 year @ a rocky marina. We still feel the deck heaving under our feet. Sold boat 7 years ago.
I missed my boat once! Luckily she was canaling and I was able to catch her at the next stop, about 2 hour taxi ride away. Lucky.
I was chewed out and written up, and it only ever happened one time. What a terrible feeling watching her sail out into the lake without me.
Looks like they have rat guards on the bow lines but not the stern lines.
You should visit Recco. It's just 20km from Genova towards Portofino. Love watching your videos from Genova - used to be home.
Oh Portofino lmao... there's this gypsy as hell sounding Italian song that's been playing all summer where some off his head sounding dude mumbles the word Portofino loudly over and over again to some trashy music. I couldn't believe how ghetto it sounded
...looking it up on webnet now...
That tender pilot is going ass over tea kettle if his engine unexpectedly stalls
the best feeling in the world is watching my boat sail away without me. the only better feeling is watching my boat sail away with a beer in my hand.
Another fine video, thank you.
...another fine video you got me into ...
Wait...what happened to chuckin' the louts overboard? Okay, giv'em a survival float thingy...
I think “A” is a prototype of the USS Zumwalt stealth destroyer. Similar shape.
I have a new respect for Water Polo.
Paul S. 1eerrrer
The rats I've seen wouldn't even slow down running past those discs
Always great yacht information. Thanks so much for posting your wonderful videos..
I'm going to make more than one comment as you go along. I love how all fenders are covered with a cleanable cover. That can be taken off. I use those on all my fenders on my let's say working class guy. ($100.000) dollars to me my big motor vessel. Why I say price, and you understand. Just the comparison to a Regular joe. His vessel are for me as expensive. I cover my fenders to leave NO marks on hull. Just like the big boys toys. You get it.
How in the world does water polo generate that kind of cash?? Amazing. Thanks for another great video!
Water polo is a rich mans sport most teams are at private schools and its a sport that has no superstar so if you can swim you can be good with a little practice. Great video as always Thanks for the rat answer.
the owner of the boat owns the team too ;) might be some celebration
@@kenvischi1047 That makes a lot of sense , could be his son is on the team it a great sport in the sense that all the players are almost equal but that depends on the depth they play.
Wealthy people like to own things. Or "borrow" them from a foundation they run.
@@RodneyLenker Ivovic is probally the best player in world. He happens to be on the Pro Recco team.
Interesting how the Nirvana had those anti rat disc's on the bow line, but not on the stern line or electrical lines
Awesome insider Filming thank you
great job, while on a fishing trip in Alaska . saw M/Y A sitting faroff in a cove . obviosly USA waters . Great photo for me ,
It’s a different world ✨
A fun video. You hit my nostalgia button showing that Porsche. I once owned a 911L Targa with the soft rear window. Totally fun vehicle. Look forward to your next. (Do Porsche owners in Europe flash lights to passing Porsches?)
If were my super yacht I would have my own shark tank built in to deal with "unwanted guests" like a proper James Bond villain!
Such great video as always man 🤙🤙⚓️
That Porsche looks like the newer 992 Targa GTS with the full light bar. Brand Spanker!
No it’s a 991.2. The 992 has a different light cluster. The 991 4 has had the red trim joining the rear lights since the 997 4 car was released.
Somehow I missed the part on dealing with unwanted guests.
Rats!
Jukka Kuusela you’re right! I was thinking the human kind of guest.lol
The Rats and masking cordinates
They attach circular discs to the cables to stop vermine running up the thick cables into the craft.
Joy's head room is extended for a very tall group of sports people.
Owner from India, but he doesn't seem to own an NBA team?
@@williamdrijver4141 Sameer Gehlaut Joy's Owner list of interests is quite extensive. He might be a randy old so and so and own the woman's Indian BB Team. lol
I watch my favorite US Navy Torpedo Retrieve move from Key Port Washington to BC Nanoose
Bay test Range. I have gone to meany open house days at this test base. All the great vessel are open to public. So it's not a big security risk watching these Naval vessel move around. I just love watching them,. And I see them turn off there AIS.
ES; Happy Easter early; always watch your vids including the Bits ones too...
that silver ship looked awsome
Water polo team: spends 800k USD for a boat.
Me: buys bread on sale.
I learn so much from you. Cheers.
Pro Recco are one of the best water polo teams. Many times European Champions. Greetings from Montenegro
Having two mooring lines that close together negates the rat guards since they can go around them by crossing to the other mooring
I checked onboard and their AIS was not broadcasting.
Talking about time off….so many times I would go into town then get on the bus to work when I wasn’t working, or I’d go to town to shop & rush to get on a bus about to leave….then I’d sit there, feeling a complete idiot because I was supposed to be going home. The worst bit was the first bus stop was about half a mile away and there wasn’t an easy or quick way back to the bus station from it 🤦🏼♀️
As stupid as I was I used to teach 😂 on forms, insurance for school trips for example it would have my name on the ‘adults responsible’ list 😂
Great video!
Big fan of the Targa GTS. Joy is a cool looking boat
Unwanted guest's? I'd be the one walking around naked
Completely agree!
You're the one leaving bum sweat prints everywhere ... gross 😂😂😂
@@johnjohn-cs9eu Not sweat, it's sun tan oils.
RATS ! I missed the part about unwanted guests. 😅
Andrea off on his amazing super yaught leaving the port.
That super yacht with the A on the back looked awesome
That's motor yacht "A." She was designed by Phillippe Starck who also designed the more recently famous sailing yacht "A."
Both MY A and SY A belong to the same guy
With regard to the AIS, I don't think it's the vessel doing that. Some areas may have a lack of coverage or in drop signal, so it will report the last position but if you paying attention you will see the ghost of that vessel ahead or for your situation in port.
👍🏻👍🏻... now playing games with GPS is dangerous if you’re in trouble, but very helpful when the X-wives are looking for the alimony!
Love you're videos. Thanks for sharing 👍
That last AIS update was over 18 hours ago. They shut off the AIS transmitter at that point. That is the reason it doesn't show them docked.
That is interesting regarding AIS and being able to update your location with a position other than where you actually are.
Well it’s a delayed position.
@@YachtReport oh gotcha it just doesn't update.
My kids do that when they play Pokemon
Manual input is if your automatic systems fail. Obviously it can be used for nefarious purposes.
Not all ropes have rat guards or shore power lines. What's really going on with rats. Great channel and very informative about life at sea. I haven't heard any horror stories of missing crew, owners, intergenerational scandal on the high seas. Do you have any stories?
Porsche guy checking in 👌🏼
That AIS that you talked about would be super helpful today, with the EU trying to take away the yachts because of a war they have no control over.
