I loved this! It's fun seeing you talk about someone's work when you clearly feel very passionately about it! I've only read The Fifth Season, and I've been thinking about rereading it and then continuing on in the series.
Thanks for the video! I have read exactly the two books you hadn't read yet when making this video, and I highly recommend them. I think I'll read the short story collection next.
I stumbled upon this video because I just finished The Stone Sky and my heart was exploding and my mind needed to process the epic tale I just experienced with someone else. I loved this video, so excited to check out more of Jemisin & your videos. How is she both a beautiful prose writer, a social theorist, and a master of developing relationship dynamics? How do you weave systemic and historical oppression with generational trauma and the radicalization that is born out of both love and marginalization? What is this? I am weeping. I am calling everyone I love. I am plotting revolutions.
I just finished the Broken Earth trilogy and was looking for where to go next, and this video was exactly the content I was looking for. Super helpful overview of her other works. Thanks!
I love this! I've been wanting to read some Jemisin but never knew where to start. A LOT of these sound so good but now I've narrowed it down a bit and can let my library determine where I start based on what's available next time I go lol 🌋
Wow what an extensive video! I've heard alot about this author ofcourse. But it was just her main trilogy. I'm even more interested to pick her up now! Thanks for sharing this on discord for #favoritevideosfriday !!
@@LiteratureScienceAlliance From your video How Long til Black Future Month sounds a good place, or I might start with Emergency Skin as it is the cheapest for Kindle.
I have The Inheritance Trilogy (physical) and the Dreamblood duology (audiobooks) but have not read either. I have read some of the stories in How Long Till Black Future Month? The Ones Who Stay and Fight, and the Storyteller's replacement were my favorite short stories in that collection.
🌋 I've only read the Broken Earth books, but I'll be reading Jemisin's other books soon(tm). I'm one of those that was thrown off by the 2nd person perspective, but I got over it by the end of book 1. Finding out why Jemisin used that perspective was really heart-wrenching
Thank you for the help. This was exactly what I needed. I was excited to discover a new significant author I haven't read at all, and knew from hearing her talk about her work choosing the right entry point might be important. I haven't decided yet for certain, but it sounds like I should start with the Broken Earth Trilogy. The only problem with that is I kind of need to clear the field and finish the (several) other books I've started so I can plow through all three in short order. Then on to... maybe the short stories would help me decide what next after that.
Thank you for this review. I heard N.K. Jamison’s interview with Ezra Klein this week and I was dying to know what kind of books she writes (I have sadly stopped reading in the last couple of years, but I am trying to get back into it). This helped massively, and I’ll be reading the Broken Earth books as soon as they arrive in the mail. Thanks for what you do. Appreciate it.
The hundred thousand kingdoms sounds very much up my alley, and obviously the Egyptian inspired fantasy so if broken earth still doesn’t work for me I’ll try one of those
Cheers for saying prose are. Don’t care about right or wrong grammatically; having the right sounds is important too. I look to read The Fifth Season for Shelf Space Readathon and am excited.
I really want to try jemisin but have never figured out where to start... As a parent of two young children, I am reticent to try the Broken Earth Trilogy, although everything else about the series really sounds amazing. But now that I've heard you mention that "The City We Became" had a Portuguese character, I know which one I'll try first (Being Portuguese myself)! Congrats on the videos, keep up the good work!
Excellent video and exactly what I was hoping to find to give me an “in” to where to start. It can be so overwhelming to start reading an author that already has tons work written. The world building and the inclusive stories are what has gotten me interested in reading Jemisin but yeah… haven’t really known where to start. You enthusiasm for The Fifth Season may lend me to start there. The city we become is the most readily available though my library, but i wonder if this is a less … “bombastic” (?) start to reading her? Massive thanks for you video and i look forward to seeing more. All the best!
I'm currently making my way through the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms series and I've read How Long Til Black Future Month and her comic work on Far Sector. Definitely saving this for where to continue with her novels.
I cannot wait for the bind up of Far Sector to come out this fall! I am normally not a graphic novel person but I like DC and love Jemisin so I am super pumped.
I started with How Long Til Black Future Month and had to put it down. I’m not a fan of short stories but it did show me how much I like her ideas and want to read more. I just ordered the bind up of The Inheritance Trilogy after watching this video. I love mythology and anything involving gods interacting with mortals.
Finally got around to watching this. Great video! I loved the broken earth trilogy and have put several other Jemisins on my TBR now 🤗 Not sure which I’ll get to first, maybe The Hundred thousand kingdoms 🌋
ive only heard a couple of people mention the killing moon and you were definitely one of them haha, it seems to fly under the radar. definitely going to read more jemisin at some point 🌋
also i binge read the broken earth trilogy basically one after another and think it was best that way since the narration does take a minute to get used to
Its a shame cause I think the magic and politics in Killing Moon are really engaging. I buddy read that one and we had so much fun guessing what is actually going on, who is involved etc. Just a fun mystery with lots of intrigue!
I read the Broken Earth trilogy. I enjoyed it but not a favorite due to the writing style. I’m excited to try The City We Became since I heard it’s a bit easier to read and I also grew up in Northern New Jersey.
I haven't any of her books yet but from what I heard she'll probably be one of my favorite authors! This video was so helpful thank you!! I think I'll start with the Inheritance trilogy ;)!
My library had The City We Became just randomly on a shelf one day so I borrowed it as my first NK Jemisin, now I'm considering NOT reading that as my first Jemisin because I am, as you mentioned, not interested in New York City. I don't want to spoil my first experience with the authors work! I might just start with the Broken Earth trilogy!
You know how we both don't love how Jordan doesn't really let you try and guess things and figure out what is happening. Jemisin has amazing bread crumbs and reveals in Broken Earth that I think you will have such a fun time with!
I just started my first Jemisin! The 5th Season was recommended to me and so that's where Im starting. And after watching this video, it sounds like that's the right choice for me :)
@@LiteratureScienceAlliance Hey! Sorry I missed your message. Thanks for responding! I just hit the 200-page mark last night and am really enjoying it! Jemisins voice is so refreshing. The story is keeping me on my toes.
Highly recommend the audiobook of Emergency Skin. It's narrated by Jason Isaacs & he is so good! I'm going on vacation next week & I'm taking The Fifth Season and I have all of the Inheritance Trilogy on my Kindle so I'm hoping to finally get to more Jemisin in beyond Emergency Skin.
I am excited to get to Emergency Skin one day! Have an amazing vacation, even though Broken Earth is dark my mom loved starting it on our vacation a few years ago
I tried to started Jemisin with The City We Became only to realize that I hate NYC and DNF it😅 I was unsure where to go from there but this video really helped! I think I might pick up A Hundred Thousand Kingdoms next
Yuppp that happens a lot with that one. It is so heavily about that city that if you don't want to be there its going to be hard to finish. I hope you have better luck with the Inheritance Trilogy!!
For Broken Skin, I’ve had that feeling too of not wanting to finish as off a series or book as it feels like that’s the end. Yeeessss to starting from short stories. I think most people who do Short Stories know it’s not always indicative of the novel form. I always think of wanting to do the City we Became from Deanie always having it displayed in her background 😂 🌋
I love how you combined Broken Earth and Emergency Skin 😆 And yea I trust a short story reader to not judge too harsh but I am always worried that the average reader will read a short story that is pretty good but not amazing and think the author isn't for them. I did like her collection but it was more an interesting exercise of how she thinks and what she focuses on than a great collection of enjoyable story telling experiences. I have heard the audio production for the city we became is the best of all the Jemisin books if that helps!
🌋 You mentioned the Jemisin World Hopper video, is that something I can watch without spoilers? I’ve only read The Fifth Season so far (currently reading The Obelisk Gate).
I gemerally do like stories of interactions between people and gods, but The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms didn't work for me. I am sad, because so many people are impressed with her, and I would like to share their enthusiasm. I have seen her read from what must have been The City We Became. She was working on it at the time. I liked what I heard of that, so maybe that will be a more welcoming entry point for me to her work.
Good luck, I hope you do find a connection with her work. I know the feeling of wanting to connect with an author that everyone loves. For me that author is Abercrombie.
Saaaaaaved!!! I'm only halfway through The Fifth Season and know I'll be continuing through ALL of these. :D
I am so so so happy Jemisin seems to be an author that works for you, it makes my heart so happy. You are forgiven for not loving Elantris 🤣😉
