Panama's Untouchables: Exiles at Home | From Colon to Rio Abajo

- In this one, we will travel back to Panama to explore the history of Afro Antilleans in Panama. Originally invited to build the canal, early migrants from the Caribbean were responsible for so much of its development. Despite structural challenges, the once thriving community held ethnic enclaves on both sides of the canal at Colon and Rio Abajo. In this video, we will explore how this population was systematically undermined by their own government.
I grew up in Panama in the late '80s, during the birth of reggaeton.. seen it all happened with my eyes.. went to Howard Air Force Base elementary, and Curundu Junior High.. My first girlfriend was a Panamanian.. Her name was Itzel, good times!
Yes , Haitian Konpa has been big in Panama since the 70's... So much so that world famous Konpa band Tabou Combo even created a song for them called "PANAMA QUERIDA"
That's the amazing music history piece that makes this channel and its supporters a little different! Thanks for that! BIG UPSSSS
I spent 2 weeks in Panama City back in 2002. Nothing but fond memories.
Panama is amazing!!!!
Once again, thank you... I wasn’t aware of the Caribbean connection Panama . You are doing an amazing work with this channel .
Thanks so much for the recognition!!!! I appreciate it... Big time!!
Whoah. When I was in Costa Rica in the early 90's, the music we'd know today as reggeaton was mostly associated with Panama and a singer named Gabi. But what I didn't know until I listened to this is that it had to do with the migration of West Indians to Central America, and then this music became viral both in Latin America and the US.
That Jamaican accent cannot die, even after generations.
Home sweet home!!!!! Thanks for showing this!!!
Thank you so much for this brother. You’re telling my family’s story. Came from Jamaica to Panama to work on the railroads. Caribbean creole in Panama is being lost sadly as the older generations start to die. My grandma is 100% Panamanian but her first language was English/Creole. Didn’t learn Spanish until she was much older
Tell it my brother!!! This channel is for us by us...
Cool vibe, real. Thanks for feeding our brother Ernesto. You are a great man always spreading goodwill and I love that about you 🌞🙏
Love these types of videos brother. Keep up the great work.
Thank you so much family!!!! Forwarddddddd
Omg Keenan you are doing a great job in your channel!! So happy for you..enjoy and be safe out there exploring
Thanks so much for you support over the years @Luvzu !!!!! I really appreciate it!
Panamenians love the spirit of the instrument eventhough the words weren't understood it was received as is coming from our brothers and sisters the same way Jamaican Dominican merengue Cuban American so on, the radio played all types of music however panama has it's own flavor
Tell ittttt!
You should visit panama during the PARADE or CARNIVAL season cause most Panamenians are either in school working or in the house HOWEVER during those times you will see more Panamenians out and about in celebration.
Yes the Church of Stones in Rio Abajo Panama 🇵🇦. I remember this church very well: I was baptized there. My home is Calle Quinta Riabajo.
Great video. Thanks for the history behind the people and the food. Blessings.
Thanks for going back my brother, cant wait to see your videos
Thank you my brother for the information on the history of Panama, I am doing my research also. As I still plan to retire to Panama, I want to know all about where I will be living and playing. As always my brother great video.
Mr. Jones! Thanks so much for hanging in her with me! I have more coming! Thanks!!!!
"That's why I never trust a skinny chef." LOL! Cold Blooded!!

Watch the next video!!!!
Went to Balboa High School in Panama years ago.
Awesome video Keenan, been in Panama for almost 2 years and was completely unawares of this area/history.
Enjoyed your vlog bro....was in Panama for 5 weeks in 2010...one of my best trips ever...hope to be back there soon
Whenever you get a chance… Panama is lit…. I’m here now….
Absolutely awesome job
Nice touch on Panamanian history. Haitians and Jamaicans always in the same countries, states, and cities worldwide. Jamaicans in the limelight and Haitians are lowkey. Raggae n Konpa
And Barbados.... and African American soldiers who married the daughters of Caribbean
Yes many laborers came from Jamaica, Barbados to work in Panama and build the canal. Many of them came to the U.S by way of the U.S Army.
love these kind of videos
Yes my brother you did it again that was a great video......also about the haitian music u mentioned, like back in the day the use to listen a lot of haitian music.....specially their favorite band was (tabou combo)😊
another excellent video!!
Excellent video Keenan I love Panama and there’s much more than what you covered but it was great anyway.
Thanks for coming through Roger.... Which "more" are you referring to?
Loved this video the kompa was litt
Thanks my friend.... I try my best to make these videos culturally spot on....
Fire channel with good music. Put me on to some new dancehall.
I'm visiting now... great breakdown
Thanks so much for watching this one fam!
.Keenan Lambert Sir.,
Tks. much.
Thank you so much my friend! Big ups!!!
awesome video.
Bro K. very good video, informative interesting and educational. From 1:47 to 2:21 wouldn't know Panama from la Habana, si? The high rises and casinos and Latin hostesses seem a long way from Rio Abajo. The salt cod in your empanada probably came from somewhere here in Atlantic Canada. It has been a traditional trade good for rum for centuries. Saludos mi amigo de Canada.
Solid video
Salute 🫡 G a genuine globe reporter 💯
I try my best to give it as I see it....
No chicks in this video?? I'm unsubscribing!! Just kidding!! Very informative, K! Keep up the good work!
Lmaoooooooo!!!! That's what some ppl do
🤣🤣🤣🤣😭😂🤭
Patties are the thing most inspiring ☺️ & peanut juice! It a real drawcard for Panama the Jamaican, the real cusuine
Yep...they love Haitian kompa. I'm here and hear it all the time.
Kompa is sweeeetttt
Thanks Keenan
One other thing Panamenians called it latin reggae we still use reggae beats on our music Puerto Ricans named it reggaeton and added so many other different beats to dilute the reggae beats in reggaeton most reggaeton artis are white latin reggae was started by black Panamenians and some having Jamaican heritage, just to be clear.
All facts…
Love u channel already
Big ups too you Ron! Welcome home...
Very well put together. As a Panamanian from 19th Street Rio Abajo I can honestly say you did your research. Well done. Look up the Book “Panama In Black” for a more in depth history on this topic.
Que xopa mi gente!!! 🇵🇦
Big upssss!!!!
My niece just showed me the receipt for patties she bought in West Palm Beach, Fl: $5 a patty. F that. I'll make my own!!
$5 in Palm Beach!???? They've gone toooo far lol
Great Job 🍺
Good content
If the ‘peanut punch’ tasted like an oat drink… it probably was sea/Irish moss. You’d taste the peanut in peanut punch. 😋
I wanted it to be peanut punch so bad 🤣🤣
It wasnt Irish Moss though…. Idk
They sell sea must too i live across the street
The first "a" in "abajo" is silent. I used to have an apartment in Panama City in the 90s. El General was poppin' back then and he was the first person I ever heard of to perform what came to be known ass reggaeton.
Brother i love watching your vids , my only complaint is that they are to short, lol,, keep up the good work ,always watching from the 242 Bahamas 🇧🇸
This one did feel really short. I felt like there would be more to it.
@@amiyrbarclift1640Notice Keenan did not respond, so what does that tell you! I think he's experimenting with different lengths!
@@chairlesnicol672 He gets to people in good time. But it is something to consider the different lengths of the videos.
Thanks so much for watching this one... It was an absolute blast to film... I had about 6-5 mins-more worth of content for this video but it felt slightly repetitive...
My people dem from 18th street Rio 🇵🇦🇵🇦🇵🇦🇵🇦

I always wonder did you study the history of Latin America or other countries. I know you mentioned that people don't particularly like the history but it does give a nice backdrop and something to talk about as you traverse the different cities.
Oh yes of course.
My major was Political Science with a concentration in American and Urban Politics and Policy. My minor was History.
History has always been my first love....
My grad degree would be in Urban Studies but it really should have been in history.
@@KeenanLambert198 it does seem like Urban studies applies as you are being a cultural anthropologist.
@@amiyrbarclift1640 good points

Thank you for showing my country.
What made you come back so soon?
The flight was cheap and I love Panama…. So I came back 🫡
His voice though😮😊

Hello, my fellow Jamaican, the video is very informative ❤❤. I have a friend who wants to move to Panama, what are your thoughts and the best places to live?
Hey you may have covered this in other videos but I’m about to be in Panama in a few days. Do they take Apple Pay down there?
Some places do… Not all… bring plenty cash
@@KeenanLambert198 Thanks for the heads up. I hate walking around in foreign countries with a bunch of cash. I saw a video you did when you went to Panama before where some guy got robbed by street walkers. Okay I’ll figure it out.
Great minds think alike ? I had wondered why they didn't just pump desalinated sea water into the canal. Near to where I live, there is/was? a water technology company that produced equipment that if you threw it into a swamp and turned it on, you got drinkable water. GE bought them out and we have not heard about the company again.
@hockleyvslleycom Why not go back n see what that company is doing any active production of equipment or if there is any activity going on, since u live so close, this would b doable!
@@chairlesnicol672 Googled it, primary product is now manufactured in both Hungary and China
Great video. However, i noticed you did not list the music played. I look forward to your videos partly because i discover lots of new music. Please list your music selections in all your videos.
I hope that you are Supporting the gentleman.
To make such a request.❤
@Ronaldjonesjr2723 that makes me happy to hear you say that…. I am very intentional abt the music I use in these videos… The music selections are there! Open up the description for the video and scroll down… You should see all 4 there.
@Edwinjones7307 the only support I ask for my brothers and sisters to share the channel to friends…. That’s all
Rio Abajo- my original home! Such fond memories I have of my childhood home in the 1970’s. Salute to you and please keep up the great work!!
Panama city is dope though...
I am wondering if in Panama they are considering or even trying to make sure the area is properly forested, because I think many areas are suffering from rainfall decrease and Forest deforestation is a big problem.
lol. Ya see big man dere. Facts!
😊
They were given work permits. No work in British Caribbean. Work permits were temporary and then back home.
I WAS FORTUNATE TO VISIT PANAMA TWICE AND GOT TO SEE HOW “BOTH” SIDES OF HOW THE PANAMANIAN PEOPLE LIVE….THERE WERE CASA’S THAT IF IT WEREN’T FOR LIGHTS YOU WOULD’VE THOUGHT THEY WERE ABANDONED BUILDINGS…THEN THERE’S DOWNTOWN PANAMA WERE THE MORE AFFLUENT PEOPLE LIVE…IT WAS A REAL EYEOPENING EXPERIENCE….
Hey Keenan, whatever happened to the cutie from Toronto you had with you the first time you blogged about Colon?
….. I’m trying to get her fine azz back in here brother
Man I haven't been to Rio Abajo in a minute! I appreciate the history and the tour man. BTW, get me the whatsapp number for the sista at the beginning of your video!! 🤣🤣🤣 IJK.... Safe travels dawg !
Lmaoooo you’re gunna see her in the next video!!! Want the IG!?! I got you
@@KeenanLambert198 ❤❤❤ help ya brotha.. i'm stuck in the states until December! OH YES, did you have any luck finding a cuban orphanage?
@@KeenanLambert198 🤩🤩🤩
Not a lick of luck bro smh....
@@KeenanLambert198 yo doc! I did some research and found an agency in Ontario Canada that provides support to orphanages in Cuba. They are called "Together For Cuba". I am going to reach out to them and see if I can join them on one of their mission trips and also set up some monetary support for them as they work with the kiddies down there. I really appreciate you making me aware of what is happening there. I'll engage my charity board of directors, make contact with the director of "Together For Cuba", and see how we can move forward with them. I'll keep you informed ! Bendiciones!

The indigenous people of Panama. Don't forget the Panama invasion in 90's.
How about a video on ISLA COLON ?
You have a simple solution to the water problem. To de salinate the water is likely in impossible feat ?
Its doable but it would "dip" the quality of drinking water for Panama City as they use Lake Gatun as a source of drinking water too... Also, it uses a lot of energy and is costly.
If you boil salt water, the resulting vapor will contain no salt. When the vapor turn liquid again, you've got perfectly drinkable water. The trick is to do it on a large scale for the consumption of a city of 2.5 million people.
Wow Colon look the same I was there after the USA military went in
First guy I met who knows how to pick a plantain.

Rahtidd bredda....that girl chopping the jelly, I cud be sure I met her. I think she said she's from Brazil
I was born in that place. Close to Rio abajo. Haitians are Afro antilean also, by the way. Same as black Panamanians. We all
Descend from Afro Arawak. We look like black Indians. Because …..we are black Indians 😐
Yes, Haitians are surely Afro Antilleans but they didn't go to Panama with significant numbers..... Meanwhile, Bajans and Jamaicans did..... The connection to Dancehall and Reggae is an act of reconnecting with their familial root. Whereas Kompa and that connection is a little bit different....
I can't eat plantain when they're soft and black. However I just discovered a recipe for making plantain bread similar to banana bread but supposed to be even better.

Are we allowed to buy property Rio Abajo??
For sure!

The first thing. I look at in foreign countries. Are the kids' faces. Rich USA kids are not as happy as Panama kids. I hear the kids still pray in schools they are not prey. Well done, Panama. I am a poor man. I am going to find a way to get there.

Calling them untouchable is kind of exxagerating
I'm drawing a comparison between the caste system of India and the Spainish casta system... Speak to older Afro Antilleans from Panama... They will tell you their stories and the stories of their grandparents...
@@KeenanLambert198 I understand but it's just racism that's prevalent across all of north and South America. You don't need a new paradigm. What happened in Panama is comparable and equivalent to what happened to black people in the US or Brazil or Mexico or even the UK etc
