Fengxian is a very prideful woman. As Mei Mei mentioned, it was her wish to not see Lakan (being disease stricken and disfigured) and granny obliged. She's also didn't want to be given handout when she lost her value after having Mao Mao, so she took on all sort of customers and caught syphilis.
I guess you are right, Granny wouldn't keep her around if she really saw her as a useless burden. I kind of thought she was like that at first because of how business minded she is, but I guess she must be more caring than she lets on.
Correct. Meimei was so tragic knowing how pride prevented Lakan and Fengxian interfered. Fengxian was so cherished at the Brothel that everyone knew but agreed to obey Fengxian desires. Meimei’s tragedy is her affection for Lakan and her big sister Fengxian denying her desires for Lakan by obeying her big sister contributing to their tragedy. I hope in season 2 her and Pairin have happiness going forward.
Maomao dislikes her father because of jealousy. She idolizes her adopted father, and he called his nephew a genius. She hates that he beloved "father" has never referred to her that way. She says he is so smart but doesn't show interest in many things; just like she doesn't show interest in things that doesn't interest her. She is a lot like her biological father.
the "but i guess he's easier to talk to when he's being immature" line is probably the only thing thus far that shows a potential for maomao to develop romantic feelings for jinshi. she was basically admitting in that moment that she likes the "real" him
Appropriately enough, the other moments where she catches him being immature are ultimately set up for her conclusion here: he was taking care of her after the poisoning at the garden party, and they started joking around after discovering the cause of Konen's death. It isn't a spur of the moment idea she got, it's a result of being around him for so long, which goes a long way to make that little improvement in her perspective feel earned
according to the author Fengxian is the madam's(obachan's) daughter, that is why she tried to hide her from Lakan and still to care of her even if she couldn't make money for the house, and why she took care of Maomao.
Something in the subtext, but the implication is that the Madame of the Verdigris House is Fengxian's mother (and therefore Maomao's grandmother). However, like Fengxian explained in Lakan's flashback, courtesans cannot be mothers. Some of the clues towards this is that the Verdigris House kept Fengxian through her illness, that the Madame's dance of greed (when Jinshi gave her all the gold for Maomao) matched Maomao's own dance of joy when she sees rare drugs (when she first got into the quack doctor's stores and when she first held the Insect Mushroom), and that the Madame allowed Maomao to visit so often (even after blowing up a room). Also that, despite the fact Maomao owed her a lot of money, the Madame never forced her into prostitution.
Guys maomao doesn't consider her Fengxian as her mother, she is just a woman who gave birth to her, similar to what fangxian said in the flashback "I have no mother, a woman did give birth to me but she is not my mother" even in this ep she keeps calling her "that woman"
If Maomao is Sherlock Holmes, and Suirei is her Moriarty, then Lakan is essentially the Mycroft in this situation - equally brilliant if not more so, but too lazy to actually take action beyond using his words and influence.
@@sayaka19fan He definitely acts as the foil for a lot of Maomao's antics/theories, but I'd more consider him the Irene Adler equivalent, given that there's romantic potential between them. Next season, we will start learning Jinshi backstory with Emperor, previous Emperor, old Dowager Empress, and the reason’s why conspiracies against Jinshi and the current Emperor. Basen’s dislike of Loulan and her father. In other words what and why of Suirei attack on Jinshi.
There's an important detail here if you know Chinese The balsam's Chinese is 鳳仙, and its pronunciation is fengxian. (You can listen carefully.) The woodsorrel's nickname is cat's foot. Cat's Chinese is 貓, its pronunciation is mao. This is how FengXian name her daughter, and it is also the same reason they draw cat ear on MaoMao's head.
You can definitely say that Maomao's jumpscare face at hearing Lakan's name was kind of a red-herring, but at the same time I could see it being explained away by a combination of a) It's from Jinshi's perspective, so he may have been seeing it as worse than it was, and b) That was before Lakan helped her get past the guard to save Jinshi, and so maybe at the time she was pissed off that he was still trying his bullshit, but afterwards she cooled down a bit on him.
Hard to say honestly. Jinshi can pick up on some of Maomao's tells quite easily, but it's notable that that even when the look is outside of Jinshi's perspective, it's still described as obvious and disturbing. One thing to consider is that Maomao is a rather unreliable narrator when it comes to her emotions, even the narration in the LN tends to skirt around any feelings that aren't annoyance, fear or herb-based glee. She may claim to merely dislike Lakan, but that may not be the whole truth; after all, some grudges stick with you whether you acknowledge them or not
I'd just like to say that whatever like or dislike the oba chan has towards Lakan it comes secondary to the main reason Lakan can't see, know or buy Fengxian. The fact that one of the girls got pregnant is already a huge blow to the house, if anyone discovered anything about that girl being bought out after that it would completely collapse the economic structure of the house, since the value of the girls go up over time, a client knowing the strategy could get a girl pregnant, moreover a girl wanting to get bought out for cheap might just choose to get pregnant, if that happens the house go bankrupt since everyone will play that game to get the cheapest price. So no one, absolutely no one inside or outside the house gets to know even a single more detail about Fengxian and what happened. It swept under the rug and hidden away so the house can continue normal operation.
Eh, I'd argue that the way to reduce a courtesan's value is more of an open secret than something that would collapse the nature of the industry. Like Maomao said, Fengxian did everything in her power to ensure that not only did she end up pregnant, but also that said pregnancy resulted in a successful birth. By contrast, most courtesans forced into pregnancy would ensure an abortion took place as soon as possible and have the resources readily available for such a process. It wouldn't be as common as you'd think for a courtesan to commit to such a dangerous play for the sake of affection like Fengxian did, especially high end ones like those at the Verdegris House, who enjoy a decent life and education and thus would have higher standards for who would buy out their contract. Some, like Pairin, can wait out until the end of their contract to have more autonomy in their choice of suitors. Fengxian's plan, as a whole, was rather reckless and impatient in that regard
It's nice to finally have a discussion where they aren't going off into the weeds of their own thoughts. I missed hearing them talk and figure out things that are actually happening. XD

❤❤ It’s always so interesting listening to you two theorize and discuss these shows - and I think apothecary diaries has been quite the ride! 😁I can’t stop coming back to it for the same reason I think lol One thing I keep coming back to in this episode that I kinda missed the first time was Maomao’s note of her jealousy over Lakan. I think (and I’m anime only so no clue if this gets addressed later) THIS could be the larger source of her dislike than his role as her father, which is definitely against expectations. Because from her perspective there’s this creepy old guy who lowkey stalks her, and that’s already disturbing even if she knows why - but then this guy she wants nothing to do with gets praise that SHE never/rarely gets from her father. So in a weird way, I suspect she disdains him more as a rival student/rival for Luomen’s affections than as an absent father
Notes: -Luomen is Lakan's Uncle, not brother. --The 'Big Sister' Mei-Mei was addressing at that point was the Madam of the House, not MaoMao's mom.- ETA: I stand corrected. See detailed responses in thread.
Correction on point 2: Meimei served as Fenxian's kamuro when Fengxian was at the height of her popularity, and before Meimei herself debuted as a courtesan, which is why she calls Fengxian older sister and continued to care for her on her sickbed. Meimei also spent time playing chess with Lakan when she was a kamuro, so later when Lakan kept coming to the Verdigris House after finding out about Maomao, it was only Meimei who was willing to take him on as a client while making sure Maomao didn't run into him.
I am glad that Maomao got such intelligence from both of her parents, maternal love from many big sisters and elderly wisdom/patience from adaptive father. The unfortunate story of her parents and cruel reality in brothel taught her not to fancy on romantic relations, but once she felt happy for her parents to have a good ending, she began slowly opening up to more genuine feelings. The palace is indeed similar to pleasure district meaning she got skillfully trained to survive among power struggles. In a certain sense Jinshi is similar to Maomao, his father only utilizes him as a tool and he was away from his mother and have to play a role to survive. With my Chinese background it’s easier to pick up some culture hints while it can be totally missed by viewers unfamiliar to it. (Lokan labels Jinshi as the high rank official next to the emperor in Chinese Chess). Lack of communication or refusal of communication is pretty typical in traditional patriarchal culture like this, unfortunately. The only “happy ending” for any woman is to win over a man’s favor. The female-centered animation is indeed awesome and comic.
You would need to read the novel as they did a better job of explaining all this. From what I remember of it the quick and dirty is: Louman is Lakan's uncle whom taught him how to see people to manage his condition. Louman was the apothecary to the royal family and when he failed to save the princes life (death by honey) he was stripped of his position, maimed and sent out of the palace in disgrace. Why the current emps son was then taken and became the brother of his father instead of his child. When he got home, he was kicked out of the family home by his brother. At the same time, his brother, Lakan's father, sent Lakan away because of guilt of association. Since Lakan and Loumen had such a great relationship with each other. Lakan thought he would be back in 6 months, but it turned into 3 years. Fengxian could not get in contact with him after the 6 months and her letters went from hey how are you to please help me and your daughter. When he still didn't respond, she severed her and maomao's finger to sever ties with him. Since he had abandoned both her and their child. During this time Loumen had come to the pleasure district and opened a small apothecary. When Lakan got back he was told both were gone and he broke down and became a drunkered. A drunkered that then got systematically kicked out of each bar in the area. While he was being kicked out again, he seen maomao and could see her face. He knew right away that was his and Fengxian daughter and tried to take her. Which was maomao first attempted abduction, the attempts were made to take her were by Lakan. Which traumatized the young child, cause some rando showed up claiming to be her father, drunk as everything and tried to kidnap her. Lakan then started to get his Sh!t together so he could find maomao again, buy her freedom and atone for some the issue he caused without thinking. Which included taking over this family as the head of the house. The old lady was still honoring the severing of ties that Fengxian had imposed. So she sent maomao to live with the apothecary and be his student. Not knowing that Louman and Lakan were related. It wasn't until way later Lakan found out that Maomao was in his uncles care and wasn't alone or being pushed into her mothers line of work. Which gave hime more time to gather resources and negotiate with the old lady. He was also the noble that was supporting the house with his time with maimai. So the whole thing comes down to poor communication between all parties. You are going to love season 2 if they do the conclusion to this storyline they started.
