    Nice tutorial, thanks. I made one change because I would like to sort the table. For example, sort the debit column from smallest to largest amount. If you do this sort you mess up the balance calculation. So I changed to formula for the balance column to this: =IF(ISBLANK(B4),"",IF(F3="Balance",E4-C4,F3+E4-C4)) Row 3 has the column headings and Row 4 is the first row of data entries. Just thought I would post this if some one else wants to sort the table.

    • @headhog77
      @headhog77 8 років тому

      I forgot one thing. I made my register for a credit card account. So there is one less column. There is no number column. So you have to shift the columns over one for the checkbook.
      =IF(ISBLANK(C4),"",IF(G3="Balance",F4-D4,G3+F4-D4))

    Nice clear and concise video. One problem I am having is I have the if-then statement working for the first blank row, but any additional rows I add to the register revert back to just the formula without the if-then portion. I carried the formula down by double-clicking as in the video.

    • @dmwesq1442
      @dmwesq1442 9 років тому

      ***** I have copied the cells both by double clicking and manual dragging - it copies the formula to all existing rows, and to the first new row I add to the table. After that, when I tab into a new row, it does not carry the full formula - it carries over the original formula that calculates the cells on the row, but not the if-then part so it puts a value in the balance column at the end of the row.

    Doug, super job and very informative! Looking for help on the next step...how to create a formula that will allow a fast reconcile with the bank's records once the monthly statement arrives. You already use a reconcile column in the check register; just looking for a way to not add back the checked items but add back the unchecked items, with a balance at the bottom that should match the bank's balance once all the reconciled activities are checked. Can you do that?

    • @leembandy
      @leembandy 10 років тому

      ***** Thanks again! I actually created a separate column to the right of the checkbook for reconciliation and used the following formula for each transaction: =IF(D4="x",0,+E4-F4) In this case, the "x" is what goes into the reconciliation cell inside the checkbook to denote the transaction was reconciled with the bank statement. When the "x" is in that cell, the transaction will show $0.00 in the reconciliation column I created. If not, it will either add back the debits or subtract the credits to reconcile our checkbook with the bank statement. A simple sum command at the end of the reconciliation column, including the starting balance, now makes it quite simple to balance our checkbook!

    Okay, I'm about to lose my mind here. I've never had this issue before, until now. I dont know if my excel has updated or what but this isn't working for me. On your video on min 5:11, you say, double click and its going to bring it down so it autocaluclates" but mine doesn't do that. When I double click it, it copies my balance in every cell all the way down. What am I doing wrong?

      The same thing was happening to me and I had no idea why or how to fix it. I found out that if you go to the formulas tab, calculations options, it should be on automatic. Mine somehow got switched to manual. click on automatic and it will behave as you are used to:)

    I haven't balanced my checkbook in 5 years. It's the most liberating thing i've ever done. Gone are the days of spinning my wheels trying to find the missing 3 cents, to bring some kind of ridiculous closer, that in the end we all know who made the error. 99.9% of the time, it's you. If you live paycheck to paycheck, then yes, it's probably a good Idea to do so, but if you don't, toss that register in the garbage can and get on with life. If you want piece of mind open a separate savings account where your balance is really a balance you can depend on.

    Doug: Great video. I've got my checkbook set up and I've got you to thank for it. A followup question: I added a column for categories (Mortgage, etc). Is there an easy way to keep track of categories? I feel like there should be a way to use the IF function in a "total" cell, i.e. "Total up everything in that debits column IF the word in Column C is 'Mortgage'" or whatever. Is that possible?

    Do you have a video that explains how to create a split transaction in Excel?

    I have the table, as long as I have pulled down the balance box it fills in, but when I get to the last one, the formula stops. I have this problem every year and I can't remember how I got it to work. The formula is correct. It looks like last year - where I finally got it to work - but now it won't continue unless I click and pull that box donw... :(
