  • Torme - The Bernie Torme Archives : Vol2 : 1985-1993 : Unboxing Review
Bernie Tormé was a punk blues virtuoso who seemed to channel Jimi Hendrix through his raw, yet intricate guitar sound. His image, like a steampunk pirate, perfectly matched his unique style. The Bernie Tormé Archives Vol 2 (1985-1993) showcases his explosive energy and talent with Phil Lewis and others, across albums like Back To Babylon and Die Pretty, Die Young. A must-have for fans of Gillan, LA Guns, and raw guitar brilliance.

Sadly missed indeed. Very underrated guitarist, singer and songwriter. Never made a bad album. His albums w/Gillan were Gillan's best and it was an absolute crime that Ian Gillan let him go. His guitar tone was unmistakeable and he was a very sweet man. The albums he put out in the years before he died were excellent, too. My hope is that they release Volume 3 very soon

This is really interesting. Totally missed out on all this back in the day.
I see there is also another Gillan boxset due for release in 2025 too…..

Bernie Torme was one incendiary guitar player…I first heard him in 1979 on the Gillan album MR. UNIVERSE which was a damn good atmospheric album with his dive bomb approach and Colin Towns as this great composer…I remember Bernie’s live impromptu intro to the Gillan band version of Smoke on the water on the flip side of the Vengeance single and he made a great impression. I then obtained on white vinyl his early solo album ‘Turn Out the Lights’ …I remember his guitar voicings at the beginning of ‘oh No’ were just astonishing…’Steam Punk Pirate’ is a fascinatingly good description of him really. A great wild player of his instrument who we won’t forget . (Paul)

    Hello Phil 👋🤘
Thanks for your review, as always it’s well done and interesting 👍. I discovered this artist with your words and unboxing, and after an enjoyable listening I decided to order the 2 boxset’s volumes. My preference is for the second period 🤘🤘🤘. You’re right by evoking LA Guns, Hollywood Vampires… For me as a kind of comparison, Tormé’s guitar style would perfectly sound with a rocker like Iggy Pop or Billy Idol. Most of his songs I like reminds me of these two rock legends’ sound style. Greetings from France 🤘,
    Philippe 👋

Awesome guitarist! Seen them once in the early 80ties with Gillan in Belgium

Wow didn't know the second volume was already out! Cherry Red/HNE did a great job with the first one, been looking forward to this one. Finally these albums are available and properly reissued. Demolition Ball was so difficult to find specially, not even audio uploads were available on youtube for many years, having a full disc of demos from that era is so deluxe too. Bernie did 80s style L.A. hard rock better than some of the American bands themselves.

Looks good, though I always do worry when I see the word, "bootleg," on a CD, whether it is official or not.

Phil, are you still planning on doing a review of Jethro Tull's Bursting Out the Inflated Edition? It's starting to get a bit long in the tooth.
