      So true. And let’s be honest, there are enough people not letting their cars see sun light. They can save em, the rest of us should use them like they were intended.

    There are some truly polarised opinions about this car. I'm no Porsche fan whatsoever yet I see the workmanship that's been undertaken on two old and very rusty former Porsche bodies to come up, phoenix like with a new car in an old guise.
    Thanks Jay for this interesting review.

    As a Porsche owner and fan of the old cars I like what they did. They rescued the 356 so I’m not bothered what they did. Personally I would have rather made the interior look original 356, as the modern interior doesn’t suit the exterior. But bravo gents, nice job.

      i agree, they should have kept original 356 interior, but im assuming that it would have taken to much time to widen all those parts up.

    • @pmodd
      @pmodd 6 років тому +9

      + Mel Kalaj Err... no. Using the 356 interior would have been infinitely easier than retrofitting the Cayman interior, probably by a factor of 50. I've spent a lot of time making cut-and-shut hybrid door panels and retrofitting a dash in my car, and I can assure you it's a lot of work. After all the plastic trimming, fibreglass work, body filler, fabricating bespoke brackets, welding captive nuts and making/running custom wiring harnesses, you might as well have just made the door panels from scratch.
      In contrast, the 356 is just a couple of flat door cards, a blob of metal with gauges in it and some scraps of carpet. Even I could probably widen that dash to a respectable finish in a single weekend, in my own garage by myself.
      To do what WCC did with that interior, given the quality of fit and finish, is nothing short of astounding.

      Remember one episode and they did a wv bus. To fix the rust holes they pop riveted metal and smeared bondo over it. Another episode they fasten body a kit on a Maybach with sheet metal screws and put bondo over. They got away with a lot of stupid stuff like that. Shoddy work like that built their business, maybe it's better nowadays but I wouldn't trust them.

  • @panthershockey4453
    @panthershockey4453 6 років тому +87

    My first impression is that the front is a bit too wide.
    but now after looking at it, its growing on me.
    I see people in the comments criticize this guy because he customizes old cars but in the 50's this would have been the guy turning your dad's old 32 Ford into a hotrod. Which back then was the thing to do. If he makes timeless work then it will stand on its own merit, if not then so be it.

    • @psyku
      @psyku 6 років тому +1

      I kinda have the opposite experience, at first glance really well done. Okay still really well done but the longer i look at it, looks to wide for me, And i'm thinking maybe they should have gone more for a retro style with some modern styles mixed in it. I do like lots of other resto modded cars even among Porsches but this looks to big for my taste.
      In that sense i prefer the original Size of an 356 Porsche.

    • @panthershockey4453
      @panthershockey4453 6 років тому +8

      of course its not as nice as the original but its a nice attempt. Like jay said, its not a hotrod anymore its a cruiser so now you can drive it on longer trips and still look like an older Porsche

    From what I could see the build quality appears to be quite well done. The second thing that caught my attention during this video was the audio, which may have had to with the newer car interior(even with the top off) and a gentrified muffler. No wind noise coming across the mics and you didn’t have to holler at each other to be heard.

      AlexCoronaPhoto and yet they are the least fun. Driving is an experience, its not a mathematical game. No car guy cares about the few milliseconds faster an auto can shift. Automatics are a waste and ruin the experience. Sad

      Yeah, but this is not a racing car or meant to be fast, its meant to be a ''driver'' car... The automatic transmition would've being fine if he puted a 911 twin turbo engine on it or something, but a normal Cayman... an auto... really?

    Thanks for another awesome vid of a sweet looking work of art. I've been a certified car nut since I helped Dad start repairing the family car, 74 Chevelle at the time. I own 2 Mercury Capri's and one of them was at Ford's 100th anniversary bash in 2003. Was a once in a lifetime show, having your car being one of the 101 icons of Fords history on display was quite an honor! A suggestion for an upcoming episode of your show would be to display the memorabilia and posters and dealership signs displayed in your garage, and the stories that go along with them. Keep up the great videos! Cheers from Ontario Canada.

    This car turned out absolutely beautiful. This car is a prime example of what West Coast Customs has learned over the years and what they are capable of. Yes it has some odd parts to it. Like the hump when the top is off, but who really cares when you consider the craftsmanship. I don't understand people complaining about it being a automatic. Its a cruiser not a track car. I have been driving manual since I started driving 24 years ago and regret buying my last new car as a manual even though it is pretty much a track car (WRX). Daily driving a manual to work, the store, etc. Its not worth it for the every once in awhile have fun on curvy back roads days. One time in heavy stop and go traffic will forever change your mind about a manual transmission. New cars these days have automatic transmissions that can almost do everything better than a manual while providing comfort.

    A custom car for someone who wants the best of both worlds. It's not for everyone, but the fabrication that goes into something like this amazing. Thanks Jay. What if someone want say a 63 Sting Ray body on the late model Corvette, the same thing would have to happen the new Corvettes are much wider than a 63 Sting Ray body.

    This example of work changed my image of West Coast Customs. Before, I viewed WCC as a car customizer. Now, I view WCC as custom car craftsmen. Very nicely done!

    how can this still be registered as a 1959 356? Its a 2008 cayman surely? Is the VIN only the body in the US? Here in the UK we have a points system, not enough of the original car means you can't keep the original "title".
