Norton Nemesis V8 rebuild - Episode 10
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- In this video I will be fitting the new cylinder liners, main bearings, and installing the crankshaft.
Note: All parts will be thoroughly cleaned before final assembly, so any debris , swarf dust of dirt seen under macro cinimatography in this video will be cleaned off before the final assembly..
The Norton Nemeses is a pre production prototype that was made in the late 90's with claims of a 200+mph top speed from its 1500cc fuel injected V8 engine.
As far as I'm aware, this is the only bike that has survived but if any of you know of other bikes please leave a comment. This bike is owned by the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham UK has been on display as a non running exhibit for many years.
I have already worked on the bike last year getting the engine to run after a few rudimentary checks, new oil and batteries for series 12 of Henry Cole's "The Motorbike Show" where Henry rode it for a few miles up to around 50 mph, but it wasn't running very well and was leaking a lot of oil and coolant.
Episodes of "The Motorbike show" can be seen on itvx player on line and some shorter edits are available on Henrys UA-cam channel.
Over the coming months I will be stripping the bike to sort out a few issues with the V8 engine and hopefully make it run and ride how it was intended 25 years ago.
A million times better than watching England play football
a very welcome antidote indeed
🎯❤
"Play" is a bit rich!
Yes, he knows what he’s doing.
Have they blown it yet?
Opened up the laptop, Alan posted this vid 12 seconds ago. So that was just perfect.
Yes, I'm really pleased with that
Standby for hedgehogs in you garden..
34. minutes.

@@michaelcurley7801you beat me to it
Not only are Allen's builds 'just perfect' but so is his production and camera work that makes it a joy to watch.
Даешь ежикам номинацию на Оскар!))
just sat down with a cuppa and a muffin, perfect timing....no annoying music, just the clock ticking and Alan's dulcet tones for company..... absolutely perfect.
Allen made a mistake but still included it in his video. That level of honesty is a good bench mark for all of us who both teach, and know we can still learn.
Agreed, fair play to him for including that mistake. Hats off to him
+ we all learn from our hopefully minor mistakes ! Cheers to Allen.
My revered English lecturer at uni used to say, We grow by experience, and here is living proof of it.
I was just going to say the same thing. In the age of all kinds of fakes, honesty really stands out. Was just recently watching wristwatch revival rebuild the same watch 3 or 4 times because he'd made a mistake and wouldn't be satisfied until it was perfect. A lesson for us all.
and what a mistake.! how could Mr A.Millyard do that.!,? …oh the modesty of the man.
No CNC machine anywhere close, just a good old fashioned lathe and highly experienced machinists hands, love it
Hand files crank cases
@@WorksopGimpcuts crank cases with a hacksaw!!
Why would he have any use for a CNC?
I bet the liners were produced on a c n c lathe
@@chriswild2458 Came to say that
Watching Allen work is a privilege, genius at work.
My wife doesn't know the difference between a spanner and a hammer. She knows motorcycles have two wheels and that's about it. BUT - she asked what I was watching, and has now watched all of these herself at least twice. She loves them.
That’s brilliant 🙂
Lucky you wish my wife would catch interest in something of mine. 😅
Lucky you wish my wife would have some kind of interest in something I'm passionate about. Or maybe not because it would end up I'm doing it all wrong. 😅
Not knowing the difference between a spanner and a hammer is not that important, every tool eventually gets used as a hammer.
She might be secretly watching it to pick up some cup cake baking tips from Mrs. M.
Had we mere mortals have attempted this task, the crank being the wrong way round (quickly remedied) would have been the least of the issues. Like any true expert, Alan makes what are actually difficult tasks seem effortlessly simple. The fruits of great skill and experience.
Everything about this was a joy to behold. Thank you Alan.
I love the whole "I'll just spin that up in the lathe and give it a tickle up till it fits just perfect"
If he wanted to, Allen could have edited that bit out, and we would have been none the wiser just goes to show even the best of us makes mistakes, credit to him for leaving it in.
I was driving home from work the other night, a car had stopped in the middle of the road (country lane) i stopped to see what was up, 2 young lads trying to move a Hedgehog off the road, i picked it up and placed him on the other side of the hedgerow, but hats off to the youngsters for not just running over it, think they are a couple of good-uns
That’s really nice of them
At one time I had a tiny baby hedgehog in my front garden where a road ran past. I couldn't see the parent or any other hedgehogs around so I put him safely around the back where the whole Street is sealed off.
I'm struggling to think of another man on this planet, who could have done this restoration and rebuild as well as AM.
The only ones that come to mind are the Binky boys and My Mechanics. I think if all 4 of them collaborated on a project my brain would explode
@@RG-gk4yi The issue would be waiting for Binky...... we have been waiting over a year for Ep 39. Just saying.
There's probably some guys in or from F1, and some of the old guys who designed the GSX-R, maybe Hiroshi Fujiwara. After all, much of this bike is a pretty straight rip off of his design.
Don't be so ridiculous...why does Allen's fans have to resort to this type of zealotry?
@@stephenscholes4758 Agreed. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of people around the globe with the skills to be doing this same task.
I have reconditioned, machined and rebuilt engines for a living for 50 years. I am sure I could not possibly watch anyone else doing this work. It is such a departure from the modern TikTok rubbish with captions ,portrait video and music blaring that I find it so refreshing that I could watch it all day. Thank you!
The best 22 minutes of the weekend are over….. Are England out yet? Mind you….. who bloody cares when there is a new A.M. film to watch!
Allen is human but readily admits it. Beautifully done.
Sign of a master.
Just perfect.
Hearing an English Craftsman say: "...to my horror, I..." has got to be one of the very best mental pictures of elegantly understated, self deprecating humour on the planet.
"I just skim this ring on my lathe". Just shows the skill and professionalism Allen possess.
Great vid as usual. Thank you
Love the clock ticking in the background (no music 👏)
Anyone else like the video seconds in without even watching it through? I love these uploads
of course!
I don't know what's more therapeutic, watching alan work his magic or listening to the clock tick in his garrage 😂
Allen, you do realise that you will have to get another project ready for when you have completed the Nemesis!
For many of us, we can't go without our weekly 'Millyard' fix!
It's the perfect antidote to the stresses ofthe week!
I was just thinking, perhaps Allen will take 2 GSX750 engines and make his own version of the Nemesis, without all the crazy nonsense like needing to take the forks out to change the front tyre of course!
From what I’ve heard Allen’s next project is the complete disassembly and reassembly of a top of the range Rolex!
No matter how stressful my day has been, watching Allen meticulously working his magic is as soothing as anything.
Not only a real old school biker, but a real old school toolmaker and mechanical artisan. Respect!
Somewhat encouraging to see even the GOAT makes the odd boo-boo.
From one machinst to another: your machining skills are top notch!
Allen, that was bloody marvellous. Slip set brought me right back to my apprenticeship about 50 years ago.
Great attention to detail Alan as ever, from a 50 year engineer using all the machines and hand tools you use, brings back great memories, keep up the astounding work.
As I watched the measuring and machining of the liners, I was overwhelmed by the calm skill given the tolerances and was beginning to think that Alan had supernatural powers - then the crankshaft went in the wrong way round and showed he's human - human but amazing - endless patience and precise progress. This was an excellent episode, The hedgehogs put on a good show too.
Its Allen's attention to detail that never ceases to amaze me.
It is so awesome that we get to see you in your element. Were all very pleased with that Mr. Millyard. Great job.
I've learned a lot by watching your videos. I usually work on old airhead BMWs, which have their weird quirks. You've taught me to persevere on fiddly bits, and not give up. You've taught me to distrust new-fangled tools, and to go with older tried & true ones. I don't know what your "day job" for MOD entails, but I bet they know they're employing a national treasure.
Sheer poetry. Calm, precise, accurate. Love it.
I am gobsmacked that your were able to machine those sealing rings without distorting them. Even more surprised that the crank could go in wrong and that you would show it.
That's why I watch Mr Millyard... he's that skilled...👍
Never would've thought about machining the cylinder sleeve gaskets like that. Allen is an amazing machinist, fun to watch, always knows what to do, and documents it on great videos.
Absolute genius..... who would've thought some sticky tape would be strong enough to fix the cyl.liners in the lathe???
I call that Rustic Engineering 😂😂.... brilliant..... thankyou Allen yet again✌️🇬🇧
Closing in.on it Allen! I can't imagine how appreciative the museum will be to have that Norton run without the prospect of it turning into a grenade!
This man keeps my attention for the full video The man’s a genius every thing Allen does is do to perfection
One thing I've learned over the years; The importance of wood blocks in a shop can't be underestimated.
It's a good thing you caught the crankshaft in wrong. What a surprise it would have been when it took off backwards when you tested it!
Allen, you make this look so easy, and the way you managed to hand-fit the liners without much in the way of measurement is mute testimony to your fabrication skills! An absolute pleasure to watch these episodes on the restoration process of this V8 Norton motorcycle's powerplant.
Cheers to you & yours, and do enjoy the rest of your day!
Oops, easy mistake we've all done similar. Your videos are a delight Allen - thanks for taking the time to do them, and to edit them so well.
When he opened the box of slip gauges my mind jumped back 55yrs to my time as an engine fitter in Chatham Dockyard 😊
Beautiful work Allen. I didn’t know Norton built a V8 motorcycle. That tiny engine is a work of art.
I love watching you work on motorcycles it is my favorite thing on the internet. I just finished building a 117 cubic inch big bore Harley-Davidson motor with a 4.125" bore and a 4.375" stroke
It's not what Allen does but the way he does it (and video's it). It's positively therapeutic; making the whole world inclined to watch his videos his apprentice is just a side effect. Only a very lucky few ever got to learn from masters like this in the past.
Allen’s attention to detail is incredible. Always a joy watching his videos.
This is Allen in his version of a study, wotking away with the clock ticking in the background, very relaxing and inspiring to watch.
It truly is one of life's pleasures to watch skilled hands assemble and explain how easy it is to install a crank shaft back to front. Charlie spotted it first I bet.
You sir are a living legend. Absolutely love how you always have home cooked/baking and wild animals in your videos . Takes a man to admit to his mistakes, hat off to to you sir
So glad that you left the footage in with you installing the crank the wrong way round! This gives comfort to us less talented fellows who FAR more often do similar things.
Richard
I love watching him work. Charlie Weaver has got to be 60 years old and still works perfectly. My grandpa had one at his farm and I played with it in the 60’s.
You were just checking we were paying attention when the crank was in wrong way round .As always , loving the content
Like to watch this everytime. Don’t stop please. These are really too short episodes😅.
Tnx for making us a part of this.
❤
22 mins is manageable for me to shoot, edit and voice over in a week
I understand but it is so calming to watch.
Carry on please.
Gr. From the Netherlands✌️
I can’t believe it.
I’m in shock!
Alan made a mistake ( crank in backwards)
I love the way it was fixed.
No fuss. Not one swear word. Just efficiently done.
Unlike how most mortals would react.
Showing your humanity tells so much more about your integrity...
...not that there was ever a question about it!
The engine whisperer! Wonderful to watch, thank's Allen.
Beautiful work Allen, your vast experience with machining using ordinary "off hand" machine tools certainly shows. Thanks again.
Allen's commentary is so calming and the expert way he handles all tools shows his natural abilities with these complex machining and fitting tasks.
You not only have admirable engineering skills and a perfect hand. You are also very good with the camera. You show us exactly what we want to see, at the right angle, with the right focus and you choose the right scenes.
Thankyou it’s all done on my iPhone 🙂
These videos always seem to fly by. As usual I can't wait to see the next one.
Ep11 next sat 6pm
So pleased to see that I'm not the only one who fits things arse about! Thanks Allen, I'm picking up a lot of useful info.
Not into bikes really, but I could listen to this bloke talk about engineering all day!!!👏🏻🇬🇧👍🏻
It makes me envious of anyone who grew up around this man, as my memories of older mates guidance tuition consisted more of, "when you're putting it back together, remember that the wee bit there, goes in first, then that other wee bit goes in after it.....and remember to use a wee bit vaseline!!!"
Thank you so much for this series Allen I just love watching pretty much anything you release.
It’s nice to see that even someone as experienced as Allen can make a boneheaded mistake. It’s also nice to see someone of his caliber honest enough to show it. Good on you Sir!
A masterclass in engine rebuilding. Thanks Allen.
Thanks Allen for another of my favourite bedtime stories . Looking forward to the happy ending !!😴
Another just perfect video. It's reassuring that even Allan gets it wrong sometimes. Eagerly looking forward to the next episode.
I love watching these videos by Allen. It's like watching a surgeon but with metal. Fascinating!!
Thanks for another "Oasis of Calmness" , I'm not sure i could maintain such composure after realising that I had made a mistake as you had with the crankshaft. I would be always anxious when using a brush for the assembly lube, in case a bristle was left behind.
Just perfect post-Sunday lunch viewing. I feel at one with the world after each time I watch an episode. What a talented guy you are Allen.
Having never seen bore liners installed this was very interesting to me. Thank you for sharing with us.
Hey Allen!
I gotta say, having patients is awesome.
Cheers Charlie!
Fair play to you Allen, for including the crankshaft installed the wrong way round, odd the gears lining up both ways 😮 Quickly rectified after realising. Now its just perfect. Always a joy to watch and can appreciate your methodical method.
I was screaming 'you've put the crankshaft in the wrong way" ... admittedly that was after you'd told us but even so. Another great video, cheers.
🙈
I’m subscribed to over a hundred channels, this is one of the few I watch the whole video- no fast forwarding. Brilliant 👏👏
Absolutely brilliant, Allen-- your attention to detail is beyond belief... I would love to meet you someday, to shake your hand and compliment you in person👏
Brilliant precision as always Allen. Better than the original build. Can't wait for episode eleven. 👍🥞🥐🍩😄
Astonishing, manual precision, and sheer patience! this is the real art of machining.
Thanks Allen for a superb video. Guys, does anyone agree with me that watching Allen work is a bit akin to a surgeon doing his job? Cheers, John.
I can’t believe you made a mistake Alan 😮love the clock ticking in the background no music just you telling us what you are doing just perfect can’t wait for your next video 😊thank you
I was editing video clips real time as I was assembling the engine and thought it would be fun to leave it in the Final Cut ✂️
Allen's voice and the ticking of the clock I'm struggling not to nod off ..very relaxing ..Bob Ross had the same effect on me😊
Alan, if you were on the original tream, we would all be riding V8's great work, thank you.
true..even im inspired to add 4 more cylinder to my 1200 bandit.. but of course we all know its not going to happen
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Your incredible attention to detail is amazing Allen. I am 76 years old and was a Volkswagen and Alfa Romeo mechanic all my life. Although I am retired now since 2011, you will never take the mechanic out of me and I thoroughly enjoy my motorcycles (4) and watching you do with the talents what God would have you to do.
Very calming watching these videos, beautiful detail, can't believe it's all done in a garden shed
I’m glad to see that Mr Millyard is in fact fallible after all!
A Great recovery was, of course, the outcome!😊😊
Allen you always leave me in awe how easy you make everything you do seem. I wish I had 1/100th of your skills to work on my bikes. Great vid.
Another 22 minutes that just evaporated. Just perfect!
15:30 the calming tick tock in the background.
Thanks Allen for taking us along this rebuild, it sure was needed.
Cheers 👍💪✌
19:10 even Allen can have a minor transgression with incorrect crankshaft orientation. This makes me fell better about all the things that I have done over the years. Fantastic work as usual Allen.
Amazing, Allen is Actually able to make mistakes, put the crank in the wrong way.
That shows he is Human, not Actually super Human. 😙
So soothing to watch his videos, love them. Just perfect. 😉
Your videos relax me like no other is able to do. It is probably the clock together with your voice that does it for me. It's also very relaxing watching a master of his craft, like you Allen, and watching in total amazement the perfectionist in action..
God bless and lots of love from Norway. And thanks for the video.
We were waiting and up you popped Allen... Amazing .. no football here... Shed/Buried and Motorbike Show whilst waiting . Top job . 👌
Bloody football
I can't wait for the next installment. I'm very much enjoying this series.
Great video as always Alan. Everyday’s a school day watching you, many thanks. 👍
Again Allen’s attention to detail, creating a confident build.
Gripping theses rings and not distorting is a lot harder that Allen makes it look, when you are removing such small amount off the ring.
This engine is going to run just perfect. Can't wait to hear it run.
You, sir, probably have the only set of human eyeballs that could be registered as accurate to .00001 eyecrometers. Another superb video on remanufacturing this machine. Thanks!
A perfect demonstration of Zen and the art of motorcycle mechanics - anxiety about how long something is taking, is one of the recurring and persistent gumption traps.
Watching Allen work is a privilege,,,,,,from Portugal
I am always pleased when Allen says he was pleased.
This is very addictive and therapeutic. Can't wait for the next episode!
