A truly informative discussion. Thank you for sharing. I've worked with children on all levels of literacy proficiency. There are always solutions and no child ever needs to be excluded from literacy developemt. There are as many methods as there are willing and dedicated teachers. We just have to keep on finding the best strategies for each child in our care.

Science based reading has to be taught with fidelity otherwise it won't be successful for dyslexic students. Thank you IMSE for your work!

My sister tutors children with dyslexia and reading disabilities. I am dyslexic myself, and it hurts a child's self-confidence in the classroom. I am so proud of them and pray that they help these children become excellent readers. Thank you for bringing attention to this important issue. ❤eM

These are great insights. How does decoding help with reading comprehension? I am hearing that although coding can help kids learn to read, some of the heavy based phonics programs inhibit a child’s ability to comprehend what they are reading. Would a better approach be to balance these two methods?

This is so ironic. The systemic approach to learning anything was accepted as the only way to learn since ancient civilization. You can't understand algebra until you know how to multiply and divide. It's common sense. But the present system believes covering basics on the way to advanced concepts will bore students and dissuade them from learning. Just last week I got the warning from my admin to stop teaching things like the 8 parts of speech, and to start asking my students what 'fun' types of things they would like to read.
