These are the best and most well-spent three minutes and 10 seconds of my social media activity tonight. Succinct but comprehensive; packed with so much information and insights; not a word wasted or misplaced - certainly not an easy thing to accomplish when talking about great producers like Château Pontet-Canet. I watched this excellent video more than twice as I wanted to drink it all in! I’m as impressed by Alfred Tesseron’s Château as I am (impressed) by your presentation and the preparation/production of this content. It’s so fascinating to learn more about Pontet-Canet’s organic certification, biodynamic farming practices, winemaking techniques, and use of amphora that they themselves made. Likewise, I find it quite impressive and fascinating when I see horses working in the vineyards (saw beautiful horses in Rhone Valley vineyards!) and when I hear wineries talk about de-stemming of grapes by hand. Thank you for discussing all those topics with so many interesting details and in a way that is so engaging and exciting. Also, thank you for sharing your favorite and most recommended vintages. Santé, John!
Merci beaucoup, Margaux! Such an impressive estate! They do such an excellent job! Very glad you enjoyed the video and that you are a fan as well! Santé!
John, enjoy all your comments and recommendations. Some of us with a limited horizon might appreciate a review of wines ready to drink . Thanks for you good work.
Thank you! Appreciate the suggestion. There are a couple I mention in the Brunello video that will be ready immediately. But I’ll definitely keep that in mind!
My first solid case purchase in Feb 1973 for $4.37 per bottle. Bought 2 cases while in college. It was horrible😊 compared to the ‘67, ‘68 & ‘70 Napa cabs available then and main reason I didn’t buy Bordeaux until much later.
Yes, this is one that caught its stride in the 2000s. Napa definitely had a strong decade in the 1970s and lots of Bordeaux was uninspiring then, even at the top end.
I have been able to score the last two vintages from my local Costco for around $100 per bottle. Goes really quickly though! Thanks for another informative video!
Thanks for highlighting this chateau! I went all in on pontet canet on this years primeur campaign. I think half my budget was spent on pontet, including their imperial size bottle. Seems like a lot of things are going their way and compared to, as you mentioned lafite and mouton, the prizes are more reasonable. Unless pontet does a figeac I will continue buying from this awesome chateau!
I wonder how you feel about recent criticism from Neal Martin and William Kelley where they have questioned whether recent vintages in particular lack Pauillac typicity? I have had 18, 14, 12, 08, 06, 96 and actually quite liked the recent vintages...
I don’t worry about that so much. The production methods are extremely impressive and I like the reduced amount of new oak. I’ve been very impressed with the vintages I’ve tasted as well. Certainly 09-10 are world class, as are 16 & 18.
Excited to be visiting Bordeaux summer 2024. Visiting Lynch Bages (at your suggestion), Giscours and one Saint Emilion TBD. Thanks for all the great content, keep em coming
Your closing comment about bottle aging Pontet Canet is not wrong. I have recently had their 2005 vintage and although it filled the room with amazing blackcurrant, vanillla oak, pencil shavings & mocha aromas, upon tasting it had enough tannin to stop a freight train in its tracks! After decanting for a couple of hours, it paired really well with a Roasted (but bloody) T-Bone Joint, but the rest is staying safely in storage for another few years!
@@artslayer1001 Not really. I see the online average is $150 and lots of places are in the $120-$140 range. Run a search on wine searcher dot com. Can filter by your location and or ships to your location.
I need to give this producer another try. I had one bottle of the 2017 vintage (I know, not a great vintage) and it was very disappointing. Thin, watery, acidic and very closed off even the next day. Was wondering if it was just a weird bottle, but someone else I know had the same experience.
@@jamesleslie1996 I think the 2017’s got marked down quite a bit in the wine shops for this very reason! Seems like a lot of people snagged it at a low price, me included
@@mcrayfourd Great question! That will vary by taste and personal preference. If you enjoy young vibrant wines with lots of fruit then enjoy it young. But this is certainly a high quality wine that will gain complexity with additional time if stored properly. I am just now thinking about opening some 2005s but I prefer wines with more age.
@@mcrayfourd Very nice! It is often a good idea to try one young and then age the rest. That will also let you appreciate how the wine evolves over time.
Hello from norway, great video! I found a deal on "Chateau pichon lalande" selling for 168 dollar per bottle and they both have 2018 and 2019 vintage. Is this a great price and should I buy both or just go for the 2019 vintage? What do you think?
@@AttorneySomm HI, i have a 2010 at home, do u think its fine opening it this year or should i wait a few more years to reach it`s full potential? THX in advance!
@@AttorneySomm I will give it another shot and perhaps try the 2010. I picked it up from total wine and it was stored properly in there locked Fridge. I also didn’t notice Any hints of TCA in the wine so I assumed it was good. It just didn’t blow my mind like a 2nd Growth Bordeaux would. I understand that it’s a 5th growth classification but for the price point I found it lacking

I think Pontet Canet is one of the best quality-price of Bordeaux ! Great tip and great content as always !
Thanks very much! Appreciate the kind feedback! Completely agree with you!
Got the last 2015 Pontet Canet from Pogos today

You’re welcome Margaux! Appreciate the thoughtful and timely comment!
Love Pontet Canet. My most collected Bordeaux. You had Tesseron cognac? Lot 29 and 53 are so damn good..
Thanks! I tried it at a P-C dinner. Agree! They are excellent! I forget the vintage though.
Nice video John, putting Pontet Canet in the spotlight. Three years ago, I acquired 2 bottles of the 1990 vintage that were still going strong 👍🏻🍷
Thank you! Very glad to hear it! 👍🍷

Definitely on my shopping list. The state monopoly on wine sales makes that harder than it should be.

Thank you! Yes, that 05 vintage is very structured! It reminds me of a younger version of 86 and 95.
I found the 2015 for 165usd. Is it a good deal?

I haven’t had the 17 yet. Try the 09 or 10. Definitely not thin! More recently 16 is top notch.
This was my same experience with the 2017. I bought it for my birthday a few days ago. The 2012 vintage was a much better experience.
