@@ajasos4589 I understand your point of view on this. In my attempt to enhance the sound some artifacts were introduced and the sound can seem distorted. It was a balancing act and I thought those issues were acceptable in exchange for her vocals being more prominent. I am SO glad you decided to revisit this revised version Mr. LBoyd. When I first heard Angelina’s “Portrait of a Child”, my unfamiliarity with the song, coupled with its poor audio quality, made me not return for repeated listening. YOU sir, are to be congratulated, because your original reaction to this song, along with your vast knowledge of music history made me come back and give it another go. I immediately went and checked out Screamin’ Jay Hawkins version, now with the context that you had provided. What an amazing, brooding lament of a song... just right up Angelina’s alley. Now, in light of seeing and understanding SJH’s version, Angelina’s cover, including her artistic “conceit” of replacing his “man” with her “child” is masterful. When Chris Walker came out with this enhanced version of Angelina’s “Portrait of a Child”last week, I immediately thought of you and I was hoping that you would revisit this. I think of it as sort of a bonus to you, for all of the excellent knowledge you’ve imparted on Angelina’s legion of fans. I am often amazed at the dedication of AJ’s fans. Chris Walker’s efforts, including obtaining Steinar Hatlin’s Norwegian translations are extraordinary. Thanks are deserved all around for this wonderful “remix” (not the least of which is Angelina for her musical genius) including the audio enhancement and translations. And thank you Mr. LBoyd for your wonderful reaction, and your knowledge that made me put “Portrait of a Child” at the top of my playlist. ♥️
Thank you, Peter. My translations in this one is absolutely no big deal. It's easy as a Norwegian to do that. The real hero here is Cristopher. Of course translations are very important, but it's done in minutes for me to translate this. Not many hours work, like Christopher has done with this ''piece of history'' from the prodigy Angelina Jordan. I've translated more stuff, wait and see. I think all of the Norwegian language should be translated and subtitled in English. Not many of us is able to understand this language. So why not translate all of the material out there featuring Angelina Jordan.

The more I listen to her doing this, the more I need to listen again. The soft, then loud repeat ending is also done in the Screaming Jay Hawkins version I've been listening to on repeat. "Painting a portrait in oil" is an extended metaphor used as the heart of the song. He uses "all the colors of blue" on his stand. Blue= sad, the blues, pain, sorrow, burdens, etc. At the end of the song he turns the image around with, "I am the man." So, it is a self-portrait. Meditate on that for deeper meaning. That's what I love about the best songs, especially the old ones: They contain poetry. Angelina herself writes....as does her artist grandmother, the one who played all the old jazz/blues vinyls for her from infancy on. I have listened several times to the SJH original of this song. I have always felt the pain of others, and it is so marvelous to witness this capacity in Angelina, and how she conveys that heart/spirit in the songs.... yes, an old soul.
