I’ll be honest, I didn’t believe that it would be that easy. Tried it today for the first time and I’m blown away. Thanks for the video, this is a game changer for rust effects!
FYI - amazon UK sold out of Dirty Down Rust within 1 hour of this video going live haha! X
Haha. Similar to AK Streaking grime once people got it into it. It was sold out globally for months.
I just got a pot of this for a project, and this is definitely the best tutorial out there. It was great to watch you experiment with different approaches and having you explain exactly what and why you are doing it. Fantastic work!
I love this stuff, used it for a few years on Nurgle daemons and Death Guard. Of course when I bought this from the UK it was cheaper to ship - now its incredibly expensive. The rust product was originally sold under the Modelmates brand. The Verdigris and Moss are also worth checking out.
For Canadian's & American's for that matter, Sunward Hobbies carries their products, if you have trouble finding it.
Wish I knew that before I paid $41 import fee to get it from Goblin's Hut to Canada.
Edit: although SH is out of stock now, lol.
@@StormcastMarine If you self-clear your goods you will only have to pay the taxes and duties and not the UPS brokerage fee! Canada's import laws makes it so they don't accept hazmat via USPS which would circumvent those fees :(
@@StormcastMarine ahh shit man sorry but Goblin Hut looks to have an answer for you. I've had this product for a few months and only just saw Zatcaskagoon's video the other day
@@goblinshut thanks for your response, I'll know for next time. I don't blame you at all for the fees, just glad you had it in stock :)
This product is epic. Your tutorial for this rust effect is the best I have seen. I have bought a bottle of the rust and verdigris.
Just ordered 2 of each product. Amazing results.
Just discovered this last week and it seems freaking amazing
Great video, I've had this product in mind for a while but this convinced me to finally order a bottle.
Love this stuff, I've been using it for over 10 years
Just bought product after your amazing vid
Fab product makes my death guard look awesome keep up the great work
Not going to lie, you're my go-to guy for figuring out weathering and the grimdark...age to minis. Have you thought about doing a 'basic kit' for weathering? Like your most commonly used paints (like Streaking Grime, this Rust, etc.) and how/where to apply them?
Thanks. I have. We are rebuilding the website soon and all that info will be there.
Great review, thank you. I already knew I was going to pick this up but now I want it right now!!!!
The Verdigris and the Moss Effect from Dirty Down are just as gorgeous! Should try those too!
I plan on it soon!
Very happy finding your channel
Been going through your backlog for a little while, I really like your process
Keep on keeping on
Bought and tried out. I agree it is the best product for rust effects out there. It’s incrediblw
Wow that rust looks great and it went on so quick and easy, achieving so many color gradients. I just had to order some!
Nice!!
Your advice and products have not failed me yet, and while this is a bit pricey, if it works even half as good as what you showed I will be super pleased. Used the code and purchased, looking forward to using it on my orks and necromunda stuff!
Awesome! I think you mind blown. It's an amazing product.
Damn! Gonna have to buy this rust product!
Wow that rust stuff is epic! Buying some now! Also epic tutorial as usual. Thank you 😊
Ty ty!
Holy crap that looks amazing!
Ty ty
Masterful. You really did an amazing job with it!
Thank you!!!
Really cool weathering effect.
Another awesome tutorial! I stopped halfway through to order a bottle. Need this in our arsenal. Don't worry, I did go back and finish the video.
-John
Haha nice!
Youve inspired me to start painting with all your videos - I begin tomorrow!
That's awesome!!
Feel free to contact me RE getting you this shipped at £9 a bottle - I'm UK based, I think I owe you one! X
I just grabbed one! ...but now I may not need to open about 5 different bottles of AK rust stuff I bought on your recommendation haha!
that "dirty down" product are absolute insane !!! it comes from the movie industrie... soooo good for us hobbiest
I’ve not long got some and I love it
Impressive work I'd like to give you a little thank you. Your channel is a hug reason why I've taken to using streaking grime (ak interactive). And I damn well love the stuff.
Going to try oils soon as I've almost got the confidence.
Been using some of these techniques on some Night Lords. I just need to use some nice pigment powders for basing.
That's awesome thank you.
Thank you for the sales. Unfortunately we are also now out of stock until the manufacturer can get us more.
Get us an affiliate link for the next round!
:D i just started using this and its blown me away
Ace video, this stuff looks quality, also that's a sick Logan Grimnar conversion.
Thanks.
Thanks!
Thanks it looks amazing, just ordered some and the Verdigris of ebay here in the UK
Awesome!!
For anyone in the UK, Above and Beyond Retail has small bottles of the rust paint for less than £8.
Mine arrived yesterday. Holy crap, this stuff is amazing. A really powerful tool.
You should call this mini Leman Rust lol. Beautiful, I'll try this product and their moss effect soon :)
Great stuff, it's a lot cheaper in Europe as far as I understand it. they also have a manual on their website on how to use it
Nice, thanks!
Amazing work as always sir. You’re one of the people who got me into this hobby, always grateful for that! Can we get a moss and verdigris DD weather in future?
Will be working on that!
That is one of the best rust effects I have ever seen. It's expensive but those results speak for themselves. Damn.
Damn straight! Best product out there for rust for sure.
Love it! Looks ace!
Thanks!
Found a shop here in Germany and order the verdigris too 👍
That looks absolutely insane. Immediately ordering.
Nice++
I just wanted to check back in to this comment to say that the product is exactly as good as it looks in the video. It actually looks too good in some cases, making me have to go back and improve other parts of the paint... lol
Can't wait to see a video on the verdigris!
love your videos :) Id love to see a video about weathering white armor, even just a short demo on a shoulder pad or armor panel.
Plenty of that on the grimdarkcompendium.com
I was wondering how long it would take for the dirty down products to hit UA-cam painting channels. I got the rust and verdigris bottles about 3 weeks ago based on the sample pictures of them in use and they deliver. The way it builds up easily and allows you to create a gradient of thicker, darker rust or patina is just perfect. Makes me wish I had a nurgle or soulblight project on my desk right now, but that will be a couple months while I finish up my current minis. I got it shipped to me from a shop in the states called Goblin's Hut. After testing the 2 I got I wish I had just bought the 3 pack with the moss effect. Great video and terrific product.
I also have their dust and mud products (they are in Model mates bottles when they tried to break into the modelling market a few years ago) not sure you can get these in the dirty down range but they are also fantastic!
@@chrissingleton8295 Did you have a favorite product of theirs? It may be possible to bring a select few back into production. I'm told the Soot was pretty amazing!
what a gorgeous model
Ty!
Their rust is great but their moss is incredible
I'll check it out!
Absolutely love all your work! Have you ever considered doing a necromunda model?
Ur nuts man, ur models and ur process are crazy. Amazing models
Great mini man! Recently saw that Valbjorn is apart of the Grimdark Compendium now. Zatcaskagoon and Valbjorn you guys are both amazing, love your guys work really inspiring! The paint job on Logan has a really nice in-between of Horus Hersey and current Space Wolves. Also for me personally I could see myself using the Dirty Down Rust Effect for HQ's and character specifics for more flare or grimness.
I do have three questions if you don't mind:
-What kind of setting you use for your hair dryer when you use it for drying? Is it on low heat, med, or high?
-What do you call that chipping tool? Couldn't find it searching through google
-Lastly I plan on signing up as a member, but was curious if there was a course or video on fur specific grim dark. As a Space Wolves player I wanted to know how you would go about a fur specific model like Fenrisan or Cyber Wolves. Would you simply just paint desired fur colors then apply dark brown wash?
The pause after you said "come on to it." 😂😂
Would love to see a follow up with how (or if) you adjust your painting approach with how semi-permanent this is (really seems to need a varnish if you want to handle the miniature or apply additional water based paints above it). I’ve seen that you utilize different finishes to great effect (like your recent flesh tutorials), so a mandatory varnish step may necessitate some creative thinking to not lose all that!
Also I really enjoyed how often the word “fuzzies” is used in a grimdark video. :D
Haha! I will let this stuff sit for days on end before I mess with it again. Hopefully it cures solid.
@@GrimdarkCompendium Yeah, I hope so too! I hope you’ll share your future observations and discoveries. This is a very exciting innovation!
@@GrimdarkCompendium I have been using it for years it doesn't cure solid. It remains reactive. So best to keep them dry. Some of my rusty necromunda bases have all turned yellow over the time because they where stored in a humid area.
@@MrVlork interesting.
@@MrVlork Does the acrylic varnish seal it?
It would be awesome to see u revisiting abandon and black legion with this product. Since ur rust in that video was so many steps just to do a comparison.
I just recently got some of this from a US distributor...after looking around like crazy.
too cool as always!
just bought this today at my local shop and was curious how it turns out. gonna make my death gaurd look siiiick!!!!!!
Love your tutorials. I’m using a variation of this grey recipe for my current project.
One bit of clarification though. Can you remove the Ak enamel with a dry tool even after it’s dried? I know you can see it in the video but I’m just wondering about the exact technique.
be made by modelmates. its amazing stuff. the verdegris is amazing too. modelmates had a whole range of liquid pigment weathering stuff. the fact you can darken it with inks as well and reactivate it with just water. can even be thinned to a wash but it dries really fast and it kills brushes
Good info! Thanks 😊
If you put a little bit of pigments powder on the wet painted area’s, it becomes textured rust, really nice by the way 🤟
Hi! Great video as always. Can you put list of product used at the end o at the begginig (I think you've done something like this in the past)? It would help a lot.
Keep up the great work
Thanks!
Absolutely love your work!
Do all these methods work with paint brushes opposed to air brushes? I understand the end product might not turn out identical, but would the order of operations be the same?
Awesome job dude. Absolutely love that. Complete newbie question i'm sure but what is that miniature/character called? I'd love to paint one of those.
wow amazing
That's incredible, I've ordered some. But for orks not my marines as ceramite armour doesn't rust.
Your video convinced me to get a pot.
would love to see you tackle something that doesn't very grimdark like Imperial Guard or something
I have to get my hands on some of these products. I'm going to have to pull the trigger on an airbrush kit. I'm using Typhus Corrosion from Citidel. Works great, but I'm always on the lookout for new paint effects.
Do you have a link where you got this model from?
Does this mean I have to throw out my brand new Rust Streaks?!! :( ;-) Going to try to remember to order this come Springtime. High temps have been around 18F and nights below 0. Don't dare order anything water based for now. Another great vid!
Ordered a set of the 3 but completly forgot to use the code to save the 10% :(
But still excieted to try it out!
Great video. I was wondering where do you order you chipping tool that you are using. I am having issues finding it online. Thanks in advance.
just one question, why layer on the paint then remove it rather than stopping the layering process when you reach that tone of blue you wanted? Is there a certain benefit to going all the way then going back in the long run in comparison to just stopping at the tone and not doing the whole ipa process?
Should you mat varnish over it? I feel like water soluble could wear off
Dang that's REALLY impressive! But the cost per bottle seems a bit high, but still tempting after seeing the results. Thanks for sharing your discovery!
Yeah it is insane. The price is currently very high in the states. However, I dont believe it can be shipped internationally.
@@GrimdarkCompendium in Germany it is about 10€ per bottle. compared to ordinary paint it is absolutly fine
It does seem to be a fairly large bottle, and if it works as well as depicted here then to me it seems worth it. I guess I'll find out in a few weeks when my order arrives :D
@@jon-from-tx Those featured are in 24ml bottles, so 2ml larger than a Pro Acryl bottle. You can also get 250ml bottles! 😲
@@GrimdarkCompendium One store has the RUST, VERDIGRIS and MOSS in Edmonton, Canada (industrial park games) !
what's the chipping tool you are using? looks way easier then the hard brush or toothpick i use.
Thank you so much for sharing these awesome techniques!! Your videos got me into painting minis, not just scenery (and also improved my scenery painting). Two questions now:
1. Have you tried Green Stuff world’s liquid pigments? Are they comparable to this Rust stuff?
2. I have AK chipping medium, is it similar to their worn effects you used in this video?
Thanks!!
Awesome! Thank you. 1. No 2. Yes
@@GrimdarkCompendium thank you! I shall try the Rust then.
Looks great, grabbed their range.
Wondering what you used for the chipping tool?
Cheap plastic brush with the bristles cut off.
The moss and verdigris versions are equaly awesome! try it out :)
I will!!
In November this year...have you followed up with the Moss effect and Verdigris?
I ordered these up right away thanks for showing these off. Would use change up you IronJaw on Goregrunta paint scheme with this rust effects paint or just add it to it? Im interested in using your guide on that for some Ironjaws.
Yeah, I would use this on the gore gruntas. No other changes needed
Slow death games carries it also along with a grass one
I'll check it out
Did you ever had problems with old AK worn effect? I'm not sure if my worn effect is old and just expired and is unusable or am I doing something wrong
Cool stuff!
Can you like put a varnish over the model or will it reactivate or react weird to that product? Or does that paint sit strong enough for grabbing and having on the table playing with?
I wouldn't recommend varnishing over any type of weathering. That defeats the purpose.
Does the rust dry flat? Would it be reasonable to put this on larger sections and then put chip medium over it so when you chip the top layers of paint you reveal the rust in a more natural way?
Love the video! Feel so inspired ❤ I was wondering if you could tell me what the tool you used here 4:52 is called?
That is just a cheap brush I bought from walmart, with the bristles
cut down.
Can get this in the UK, including Amazon, for £10 (so about $12). If you're painting buddies want it as well, buy a bunch and split the shipping costs.
I’ve really enjoyed experimenting with this dirty down rust, but have been struggling with finding a technique to seal or protect it that doesn’t damage the result. Have you found anything that works?
Based on the solvent mix, spray acrylic varnish should leave it pretty well unmolested, though it will kill the textural differences. You could, were you so inclined, go back in and do a brush-on varnish pass to bring in that contrast in finishes, but I don't know how close you could feasibly reclaim, without a full line of brush-on varnishes, and a lot of patience.
Amazing work, but that Logan is looking like he borrowed a plague marine's armour. Have you tried the rusting liquid that actually RUSTS paint? That is the most realistic rust effect i have seen on a miniature because it is done with actual rust. I cant remember the brand of it, but on the video, they try it on a plaguemarine and it just blows your mind.
Will you make a video trying out the moss effect? :)
Yes.
It's definitely the goods!!!!! :D
What color would you use for dark angels doing the same process ?
What about using foam makeup sponges instead of q-tips?
As always your videos are very informative! Question though, Why did you use the second aplication of grey primer instead of grey paint/ Thanks
I just like the combination of the primer and the dark brown wash.
@@GrimdarkCompendium thanks. It does look good. Excellent job on that mini! I’ve never wanted to do space marines until now. Always Orks, Death guard and Necrons.
Can anyone tell me if this is a custom model or where it came from? It's quite amazing and I need one for my wolves
That stuff looks awesome!
What was the tool at 4:50 you used for chipping? I need one of those.
A very cheap brush I cut the bristles off of. 100 pack at Walmart for 97 cent.
So I've found, when using this paint, that if you mix it with water 1-to-1 for your first pass, then paint straight from the bottle over it, as the water evaporates through the layers it can give a more profound rust effect.
Also, be super fucking careful when using heat to speed up the drying, I kinda maybe set my model just a little bit on fire, and it burns clear like race fuel so I didn't even notice at first.
How's the durability of the finish? Would you say it's more or less durable than, say, an oil or enamel rust wash? Or will it require more of a sealant like pigments?
It's about the same as enamels. No varnish over weathering.
Product looks interesting. How does it compare to steel wool and water. I personally have gotten similar results with steel wool/distilled water/ and IPA. I put steel wool in tap water and let it do the thing. When the water is all evaporated I add distilled water and 99% IPA 50/50 or 40/60. Similar results really. Have you ever tried rust out steel wool? Was wondering is all?
I have not. I've usef iron oxide powder and vinegar.
What model is that? Looks amazing with the awesome paint job! I am not sure. Have ever seen it before.
It's a kitbash. A build guide is on grimdarkcompendium.com
Just got my shipment of rust and verdigris. Regarding the rust; mine seems to give me an overall poop brown color. I wonder if you figured out how you can get more variations. I love the light yellow, in contrast to the darker tones, which may be achieved by applying thicker layers. Any follow up tip? Thanks, and cheers!
The light yellow is acheived by adding additional water afterwards. I get more variation by using some Ryza Rust in a stippling pattern as a base to where I will eventually put the Dirty Down. The Grimdark Compendium video on the Lord Discordant gave me the idea.
But for more yellow than brown, just go back to where you already have the dirty down and dab at it with a water wet paintbrush or q-tip! Let it dry between dabs until you get the desired effect.
What is the tool you use for the chipping?
These look awesome. But hey are so expensive to get here in the Netherlands. How do they compare to Greenstuff World Liquid pigments. They have some rust as well
Personally not a huge fan of the greenstuff world paints.
