- This is ‘La Valse’, a social waltz, which was choreographed by Sir Frederick Ashton for the Royal Ballet in 1958 to music by Maurice Ravel.
It was performed here by the Royal Ballet Corps de Ballet in 1963.
Enjoy!
A great deal of work in this beautiful ballet. Fabulous ❤
How satisfying! The choreography is just like I imagined-and I didn't think real dancers (as opposed to animated ones) would've done it justice because of how magical and impossible it seems. But they did, and this has made me very happy.
it's such a shame it is not still in the rep
I've always loved this music - apparently it depicts the whirl of society on the eve of the Great War.
that's interesting - society as it was before maelstrom that changed everything
Lovely.
thanks for the upload. I love the music and always wondered what a ballet would look like with it. I am happy to see that Sir Frederick Ashton did a choreography on it
the music's lovely isn't it. i'm not sure whether it's currently in the rep. which is a shame as it's a great showcase for the corps de ballet
Really? I always thought George Balanchine did this ballet! My bad.
@@kathymyers7279 Yes, he did. Different from Ashton's in its darker undercurrent. Both are fascinating pieces. Wonderful in fact.
Love the choreography
me too - not sure why it's not in the rep. today.
John Hall well, I see a preview of this ballet of the Royal Ballet on youtube. And it was probably not in the rep because it was a no-star ballet. Is it just me? But I think it is similar to some Balanchine's ballets in the fact that there was no focus on any particular dancer.
I'm sure I've seen a photo of Lauren Cuthbertson dancing in this, so it might still be in the repertoire!
that's great - a pity to loose Ashton works.
Thank you for this awesome footage. Perfect explanation of the true art valse
pleasure - a pity this Ashton 'corps' work is not still in the rep.
Splendid👏
Enjoy the waltz... 👏👏👏
indeed :)
Give me anything performed to a waltz and I will be in pure heaven...
me too! and add something with a Latin rhythm and i'll be in heaven plus!
Amen :)
:) :)
The choreography at the coda was incredible.
aren't they!
Danke
Eccezionale
Ottima coregrafia
Music is by Maurice Ravel not by Leonide Massine.
yes, i have that in the 'notes' attached to the video upload.
P Da - yes, indeed
Great choreography! I wish the end were not covered by fog though haha.
aren't they!
Wonder if there is a modern version of dance using Ravel's masterpiece?
i'll check around to see :)
I don't like the end. In my fantasy it has to be all falling down, not some daze covering unknown end. It's Dance Macabre, not a usual Wiener Walzer, but The dancing ladies just continue to smile as though nothing happens. It take the edge of this music completely away.
Do you know who the six leading dancers are? I think the one in the yellow dress may be Merle Park, but I'm not sure!
hi Jane. the ballet was created to show off the corps de ballet and no individual dancers are listed in the cast list - curiously in the same documentary - 'An Evening with the Royal Ballet' - Merle Park dances the 'valse' in 'Les Sylphides'!
the one in the yellow dress is Christine Beckley (1939-2023). I can say this with some certainty as I attended her memorial service today and they played an edited version of this film pointing her out. Apparently, she was particularly proud of her performance in 'La Valse'. There were some lovely tributes from Dame Monica Mason, her son (Igor Clark) and a former student (Valentina Karoleva).
I used to play the piano for her classes at the Urdang Academy and she made an indelible impression through her immensely dedicated, if somewhat fierce approach to teaching. Very respected by some of her students, she leaves a tangible legacy. RIP
Find it a bit "old fashioned". I really prever the dark and manic version from Balanchine.
노란 옷 입은 무용수 혼자 너무 튀네요.^^;;
Thank you, John Hall!
pleasure :)
