Ep. 8: Personal Trainers in Singapore | The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

  • Ok first off, ’fitness’ is an extremely general term. It’s literally EVERYTHING, from training to nutrition to lifestyle to different sports. What i’ll be sharing about will be more about nutrition and strength training in general, which is more in the wheelhouse of personal trainers.
    Kinds of Gyms in Singapore
    Public (ActiveSG)
Standard equipment, DB up to 20kg, standard BB but it sucks for benching heavy.
Commercial/Boutique Gym (AF, FF, Gymbox, Pure, Barre, Pilates, Yoga, Spin etc.)
    Crossfit-style/Hybrid Gym (F45, Barry’s, UFC, Evolve)
    HIIT classes for quick workout
    Private PT Gym (Ultimate Performance)
Dedicated to personal 1 to 1 training only
The difference between a personal trainer and a fitness instructor.
A personal trainer is someone who trains you and you alone. One to one. If it’s one to two, it’s because your trainer wants to double his income. No way he can give you the dedicated attention you need. No frickin way.
An FI conducts a class and make sure things run smoothly and you don’t die during the class. I mean, the clue is in the name. Personal. It’s a tailored service. Not a generic workout template, like in a typical HIIT crossfit class.
So don’t get me wrong here, it’s not a debate about who is better. It’s quite a different job scope, is what i’m saying.
If you want to burn some calories and have some fun w/ friends, use classpass and go for free spin class trials here and there, at least you’re staying active. Or if you wanna touch some weights, ’HIIT’ classes like Barry’s or F45 are for you.
HIIT classes like F45 or whatever are not MEANT for building muscles, theyre meant to get you moving, move some weights, get your heart rate up, make you feel good. Very very different from strength training w/ a personal trainer. Train for a specific purpose, is my point. Don’t join HIIT classes to ’build muscle’ or ’lift heavier’, go to an actual PT gym w/ heavy ass weights. Similarly, DON’T go to a PT gym and just do cardio. Hello(?)
If you guys are asking what i think is the Best gym in SG, i’ll ask you to google singapore personal training review and see which one has the most number of positive reviews. Let me give you a clue. 2nd place isnt even close.
    PT as a profession/career
    1. The PT industry in SG is so small that If you apply for a job, ’personal training’ isn’t even recognised as a professional field in itself like Finance or Marketing.
    2. PT is growing slowly but surely because health is and will always be important to any demographic.
    3. Leading by example will always be part of the job description. Walk the talk; if you can’t do it well, maybe don’t teach it.
    4. If you don’t enjoy moving iron, you won’t last long.
    5. If you do enjoy it, the lives you change will be the value you contribute back to society and i can assure you it will be worth your time and effort.
Why no Asian parent will want their children to pursue a career in fitness/sports.
You’ll never ever hear the parent saying ’boy, study hard so next time you can train other people and help them get in shape’.
There is tremendous value in PTraining that hasn’t been recognised by the general population yet. People rather eat junk and pay for pills and treatments years later instead of simply watching what they eat. Then again, that’s where i come in. Many people think theyre eating ’healthy’ when they’re actually not. I’m not a doctor, but hey, if you’re 30% body fat and above, no way that’s healthy, come on.
    The good ones
The really legit ones are expensive for a reason. They know what they are doing, w/ a proper training structure and everything, knowledgeable about nutrition and training facts.
    The not so good ones
Well, they may not be bad on purpose. I’m referring to those street level ones who have some training experience themselves and are somewhat in shape and decide to train their friends or schoolmates to make some extra pocket money. Or simply those starting out. Everyone starts somewhere.
    The really shitty ones
Well, we have the molester who went viral
Using phone on the gym floor
Disregard for safety, bad form just push only
Having a good physique doesn’t necessarily make you a good trainer. Some people are just really genetically gifted and look very aesthetic (full pecs, broad shoulders, narrow waist) w/ random training, it doesn’t mean they know what they’re doing w/ you.
I’m in the business of debunking fitness nonsense but i try not to go after my fellow trainers who are trying their best to learn and improve as well. That being said, it’s your job to put out accurate info, it’s my job to debunk it when it’s untrue.
In order to be good at something, you have to be fully invested in it. It’s a craft you have to master. It’s NOT A PART TIME GIG. Before i go, i’m gonna stir things up by leaving you guys w/ this. If you’re paying more than $100/session for someone training you as a part time gig, you’re getting ripped off and i feel thats unethical :)

I am a Personal Trainer in SG for over 20 years. I can strongly relate on peoples view on Personal Trainers. Was a Gen X making a tough decision being a PT from a professional one in the tough old days. I can tell you my parents and relatives were laughing at me and wondering when i am going to have a real job for over 10 years! There is only one direction i can go. Be a damn successful PT. They stopped laughing and now willing to listen about my industry. We actually help people save their lives after most only seek a PT when are in deep trouble.

I think with social media and making use of digital media. Personal trainers can make passive income with their assets.
    Ignore the negativity.
    Stay positive.

Hey Dino. I'd have to disagree when you say that there's nothing functional about tireflips/battleropes etc. With all due respect, 'functional training' has been widely used and misunderstood. When you say 'muscles', I could simple ask, what makes a muscle functional? It's simply through a movement. And personally, I think 'functional training' is just a simple way to advertise movement for inactive individuals.
Well, regardless, I enjoyed your entire video. Thank you for sharing this.
