Gidday mate. 20 odd years ago I used to work for one of the big companies as a driver. Then they made me a nightshift supervisor. I was looking after 25 drivers doing local deliveries . and driving myself if drivers didn't show as we had no spare drivers. There was at least 1 or 2 hours doing paperwork every day .Since it was a 7 day 24 hours a day operation if no one showed up on a sat or sun it was my job to cover for them. Doing 12 hour shifts . My missus said either i quit or she would as she was hardly seeing me. So i left .The big companies don't care about anything but profit, Cheers.

True that. And if you do go out of your way to help them out they start to take it for granted and give you a hard time when you don't want to do it. Have to have a work/life balance so you work to live and don't live just to work

I can't understand why all the drivers don't get together and stop work for a day or two. Even if half them did. Demand things improve. Demand the police stop harassing truck drivers. If this happened then the country would come to a screaming hall and demands would be meet

Come across this video, thought I'd watch a bit of it, 1hr later still watching it, he knows how to tell a story. Takes me back when i was working in the transport industry driving forklifts loading and unloading local and interstate trucks, still to this day the best job I've ever had. Yes we use to do silly stuff on forklifts when quiet. I'll have to look up more of these videos, subscribed!

Great video Shane, as a 30 year old Asian male who just immigrated to Australia and does not work in transport industry or anything near it, you are the person that is about as aussie as I can know. Surprisingly, I agree with the values you showed in your story. Guess what’s right is right, got nothing to do with races or cultures. Great story teller, keep up the good work mate!

Hey Shane, just found your channel and subscribed straight away. I retired back in April after 35 years working in the railways. I was an interstate freight driver who worked mainly nights on a variable roster with no social life and a loving wife that tolerated a lot with me being away from home much of the time. It would have to be the last couple of years that changes in management practices on how things should be done and the new OH&S crap that we have to put up with really got me hating the job more and more. The new staff that were coming through were not getting the training and we had to carry them as well as do our jobs and nothing could be achieved quickly because of the OH&S red tape. I finally decided to burn up my surplus sick leave and then retire. I really loved my job and driving once but now don't miss it at all. Love the channel and look forward to another drive and chat. Stay safe. Cheers👍

Just left a job after 12 years.

I asked the skirt if she had completed a 4 year trade course and spent 10 years in the trade.
    Response was “I know”.

Sounds like no matter where you work you come up against ‘those’ people. As someone else commented, work changed in the 90s onwards. Worst thing that can happen to a business is to go corporate.
I work retail (supermarket). Have done for 35 years. I’ve seen those manager suck ups come and go, even helped a few out the door. The only thing that remains consistent are the workers who actually do the work. To survive you either have to leave to go to better jobs, or like me, just learn to turn up, do your job to your pay grade the go home and disconnect. And count down the days to retirement 😊
Thanks for the interesting story. ❤

Thats Toll to the T. Whole managment is ran by a group of friends that all know each other outside of work, and they all get away with it. Same situation with all the other different Toll banners and states of operation, cant escape it. I'm currently on my way out aswell, best advice for anyone working for Toll.... We're all just a number to them, nothing to benifit from in a long term job. Very hard to build a future under any Toll banner, only place i've worked that has zero reconition for their employees. Shane love the video watched it all the way through and can relate in portions of what you were saying. I’ve worked at numerous Toll sites in Victoria back in the day from Toll as one organisation to tall Ipec and to see how they just tried to get the most out of you And hope that you forget or not make it their priority to see the value as an individual.
The things that make me stay in a workplace sometimes is knowing that you are good at your job and you are putting others in shame that’s sometimes the best feeling being in a job and others looking like their shit but at the end of the day also .
Leaving jobs just because there’s so many lazy individuals time wasters and then the organisation hoping that you can be there to pick up the pieces is sometimes the reason why walking out of the place is needed because if they don’t notice at times full-time is doing less work and they hope that casuals Should work twice as hard is something that does not go well with me at the time.
That’s why I believe working for yourself putting something in place in the background so then if anything blows over out of your control, you have something that you are building because at the end of the day we are all working on somebody else’s dream and need to start focusing on our own

Loved this story, it's so much bound by how many workplaces have changed since the late 90's, and enforced more during the 2000's. Lately in Australia there is savage nepotism leaching into companies, sort of employment that lets unsuitable staff to be employed and protected. It's when she starts employing her friends when the big shit hits the fan. Shane you remind me of the late great UA-camr Aussie50. As a female I GET you. I worked for a boss in the Territory many moons ago. Your story was almost a carbon copy of my story. I had been working in the office, unloading trucks, reloading trucks, making local and day long deliveries, had the keys to the safe to pay employees their wages, and he had the audacity to say that I had to work the till in the retail shop. He wouldnt pay me my final pay, and let me finish on the friday of my termination. He insisted I work the saturday and get paid at the end of my shift. Before I stormed out the door with my pay, I ripped off my company shirt, threw it at him. Luckily I had a Tee shirt on as well. I told him he needs a machine to work my job, and when it breaks down, he would reset it, to make it work harder. Stay Safe.

I might be a little sensitive but I instantly regretted my first foray into the transport industry as a round town delivery driver of a 10 ton rigid when I went to use the loo upstairs at the depot (the only one toilet for 5 drivers and 12 warehouse staff was occupied at the time)
    and was shouted at....
that upstairs loos (plural for 5 staff) weren't to be used by drivers....
even though I had been able to use it without a problem when I was being interviewed for the job...and during orientation.
I was stopped by Police and the first thing said by them was "Do you know how shit your company is?"
I explained how green I was to this industry...
and they wrote the ticket out for a vehicle fault.....to the company....not me...(Nice bit of legislation....)
once I explained that the Company has us come in 2 hours later on Monday mornings (no pay of course) rather than give us time to maintain the vehicles and they had no water, oil, windscreen fluid, tyre pressure gauges/air pump or even a broom to clean the trucks with at the depot!
Boss looked at me sideways (How TF did you manage that?) without any verbal comment.
I left after 2 months of being imposed upon by pricks.....

Funny how "up and coming" new managers hate being told in meetings
"Yeah we tried that 40 years ago under Z manager and it didn't work.
Then manager Y tried this 20 years ago and it didn't work then either...
So here we are now and YOU think this is going to work...
not without this, this and this being spent by the company
and this system being put in place
that our competitor is using right now to do us over in the market..."

I quit my job as they were trying to word together that they were sacking me. Over the dumbest thing. I told someone that they would have better luck getting water from a rock than an apology from the supervisor.
Some rat screen shot my comment from a group chat and showed the supervisor. Apparently it was rude, discrimination, some how.
But to make the story that much better. 12 months later that same supervisor was on the chopping block and quit her job for abusing her power and abusing staff, harrassing them, treating them like shit.
It's just funny how they can be so upset over a comment that is by no means rude or what ever but they can treat other like that.

It's a wonder no one had an accident. Had to lie on prechecks several times that I had 10 hour break when one of the other guys called in sick... The job was easy and enjoyable enough but management made it not so fun. Earned yourself a new sub mate👍

Story had me truly infatuated. Well done with your storytelling. I could tell the frustrations and misunderstandings management had with yourself, and did nothing about it, even if it was to seperate the two of you but I think that couldn't be done if they were trying to get 200% of the work done with only 50% of the people required to do it. It's an impossible task. Did yourself a huge favour getting out of there my friend.
Likewise for myself, worked for a company for over 5 years, got some promotions and that but never ever really got recognised for anything, none of the hard work or effort I put into that company to make it what it is today. Management can be a real letdown hey. It is important for us to take note of our mental health and wellbeing than the companies' bottom lines. What a letdown! Glad you're doing better for yourself now.

I love your story telling! After being a stay at home mum for 17 yrs I found a job thought ok I have to use my own car to travel and it will be a casual job etc… do the job for 3 months and then ended up quitting cause I was getting 30 packages in 1 week sent to my house. I had to build point of sale bins you see at service stations, Woolworths, Coles etc.. getting paid $30 an hr some jobs in app that were allocated were 20 mins if I was told them that I was sitting in traffic to add the extra time they wouldn’t approve it. I was left with working by myself instead of with a team with most jobs and was taking way longer than the allocated time that was on app had to email to get extra time and the reason why. Had to make up customer interruptions, because going from one job to another doesn’t count in between jobs sitting in traffic. Getting paid extra 88c per km for my car. In that 3 months I racked up 3000 km in the 3 months I worked for them. It was ridiculous. So nah I quit.
Every time I worked in office with a group of people (used to be a receptionist) it was always the females that were the back stabbers I can relate cause the amount of times I’ve been sacked cause of some bitch saying that I said something that wasn’t even true. I’m a female and I mind my own business and never get into anyone personal business either so if someone is talking about something I pretend not to hear or these days just look at my phone. Back when I had a job iPhones or smartphones didn’t exist 24yrs ago so couldn’t do that 😂 but did pretend to ignore gossip etc. That’s what I used to hate when females office workers start being big mouths and say something and everyone believes them. And yet they keep their jobs while I lose mine. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I just don’t get it.

Management always has a serious problem with doing simple math: If you lose 25% of your work force then you'll lose 25% of the job performance in the allotted time.
What I have learned over the years is that if you lose someone from the work force you have to NOT make your job quota starting the VERY FIRST DAY they are gone.
You have to show management that without a replacement they will lose work production...otherwise they will never hire a replacement because just 3 can do the job of 4.
They had several weeks of warning when your mate gave notice in which they could have hired a replacement for you and have them trained before your mate left.
I treat everybody equally...if she can't handle being treated as an equal then maybe she is the problem.

We got a new production manager and within the first week we all knew it was not going to work. Reports from outsiders who knew him at his old place of work had him in the car par of that work place staring at 4 slashed tyres, he was hated that much.
He was an unsafe person on the shop floors and when called out it was always some one else's fault.
He sent 5 workers to anger mangement schooling under the threat of sacking for non-compliance if the worker refused. He had left his wife and 3 children and was sleeping with H.R. so complaining was pointless.
By the time I had to go to anger management it was obvious to all employees what the cause of all the anger was so I brought this to their attention.
Naturally this was to no avail. I retired and kept in touch vide several old work mates and found out senior management finally had enough of him and moved him sideways to a new position created just for him. Why? No one ever told us. The very next Xmas all that knew of him got a wonderful present. He was walked out.
According to those I heard from just after this walking happened the atmosphere became breathable again.
The position created for him has still not been filled and the place is rolling along quite well without him.

But, year after year after year I see management choosing their mates and grooming them into a role they don't completely understand and to be honest for the most part they couldn't even do basic inbound outbound tasks and understanding the requirements for operational excellence let alone multi tasking and managing staff.
