    Conformal coatings don’t actually waterproof electronics. What they do is prevent corrosion of the circuit board from any moisture present. To waterproof you need to completely encapsulate in some kind of epoxy. This is from the mg chemicals website;
    “Waterproofing electronic circuits requires the application of an unbroken conformal coating that is free from any voids and has a watertight seal around the edges. Some believe this is the actual function of a conformal coating, but this is simply incorrect. Rather, a conformal coating acts as a semi-permeable membrane through which water can pass by osmosis. It protects the circuit from the harshest effects of long-term moisture exposure, such as the corrosion of copper traces, but in order to truly waterproof a PCB, the circuit must be fully encapsulated in epoxy, polyurethane or a silicone resin.”

    The ports thing is a misnomer. It's a pain in the ass to rub the pins off but it's doable even easier if you reflow the joint. Protect those fetz! I love how most quad guys (not you as I don't know you) have no idea what a fet is or how an esc works in conjunction with all the different parts. Most can't even solder or use a multimeter. I've watched mod videos that were an absolute joke and an 800 dollar piece of bleeding edge tech were bricked because they never bothered to practice soldering or even learn what a fet actually is.

    I have landed a couple times deep in snow without conformal coating and all I'm saying is after rinsing it with warm water and letting it dry in a warm place everything has worked just fine. Just don't ever plug it back in when it's wet, have got a prop to spin pretty fast for no reason in my room and it made a mess.

    • @Ancyker
      @Ancyker Рік тому +1

      Exactly. And I know your comment is old but for anyone that comes across this video on Google like I did:
      Electronics are only damaged by moisture in 2 ways. The first is getting wet while powered, this causes shorts to occur and can damage components. At the very least it usually causes the device to misbehave until the shorts are removed. If nothing crazy shorts (i.e. shorting a 12V supply to a data pin) the device might still function once dry. When a device is unpowered (which is not necessarily the same as turned off), liquid will not typically ruin it right away -- that's why if your phone or other device gets wet most sites/people recommend you immediately power it off.
      The other way moisture can cause damage is corrosion. Liquid can destroy something even if it's powered off by corroding it. That's why you can say, spill soda/water/etc on something, you wait a bit, turn it on, and it still works, but a few days to weeks later, it suddenly stops working. That's because though there was no short preventing it from working, but the liquid corroded something during that time to the point where it can no longer function.
      Again, I know you probably know this, just putting it out there for anyone coming across this video/comment. :)

    Thanks. I am worried if I don't coat the boot button it will cause problems when getting wet? Or if I coat the button it will flow under it and destroy the function? What do you say?

    • @woofbark4475
      @woofbark4475 3 роки тому +1

      I say you are correct! I've just finished coating CB radios and i had huge issues with PTT press to talk and other buttons. I had to fart around to get the stuff off using another product and it wasn't fun. However liquid glue is less viscous and very easily removed. U could drop a dab over it to remove later. As this button has to be pressed down to make contact its a relatively unknown quantity whether water would cause an electrical connection. Personally I'd certainly not coat the boot button as it's the other more exposed components that are the issue. Others have mentioned not to coat the gyro but im not certain of the validity of this. If you land in water let it dry before u fly.

    • @Simnettnutrition

      You are correct. This is just extra protection but certainly not perfect. I believe you would need to use special waterproof connections and coat the entire thing in some type of epoxy. There is a more detailed explanation further up in the comments.
