In this video I show you how to make a spiral helical cone antenna tuned more towards the 5.8GHz frequency. One of the major benefits of this antenna over the straight helical is its increased beamwidth.

very helpful thanks. with brass if you heat it up to red heat then quench it in water the bras will become very pluable. making it easier to form. reheat it after you shaped and let it cool slowly and it wil harden back up.

Mark stillman I believe that is reversed. Slow cool soft, rapid quench harder..

Just had a look at the shop, no price!!!
looking to use one for the center antenna of my antenna tracker, would be nice for some feed back on the type I can use. Using three 5.8ghz RX units reading the RSSI to keep the center RX pointing at the craft.

Very good, once again! I wonder if 1.6mm copper coated steel TIG wire might be a suitable, and much cheaper, alternative to the brass?

+James Lamb Hi James the brass rods only cost me £3 for 6 300mm lengths though the sell has since put his price up to £3.99

Have you graphed this on 4NEC? Curious what the radiation pattern and rejection looks like. Nice work!

I want to try to build one like this at 5.5GHz. What design formulas or parameters did you use to get your dimensions?I am following some equations in textbooks but my antenna is being so small, impractical to make.

Hi. I've got an Immersion 5800 duo video receiver. What kind of antennas do you suggest me to use to get the best video signal? Thanks

A tidy build Andrew. The results look great. By the way, what program are you using to scan for signals ?. Look forward to your next project.

    Mr. McNeil,
I have followed you since the beginning more or less. I find your videos wonderful educational experiences that help round out my knowledge of rf in a laser bean focus as my fpv hobby is completely contingent upon good transmission and reception.
I wonder if you might be able to design 5.8 antennae that are as precise and effective for specific frequencies within the 5.8 band?
Here you are discussing wide band antennae, but I would like to have a set of 6 or 8 antennae with each one structured to very specific 5.8 frequencies. Is this a project that is feasible?

+Hiway Hi Hiway do they have to have circular polarisation?

      andrew mcneil
preferably as that is the standard for most of us- I am building a double, dual diversity groundstation which would allow me to run 4 antennae- so I could have linear and circularly polarized but that is just not efficient- I am hoping for a set of omni style 3 lobe antennae that are specific to each of the 6, or 8 channels used in racing. Also, in both left and right hand. Tall order , eh?

You have achieved this wonderful project with a hamradio services, and not a word about that, not even a callsing.... TS TS TS shame... big shame. Without hamradio (amateur radio) you wouldn't be able to touch your nose. 🤔😟😟
