    Reason #136 why the Beatles are unparalleled in music history...honestly feel sorry for those young people who don't give them a chance. Their level of songwriting (though they didn't write this particular one!), craftsmanship, performance, style - the brand new directions they took music, and culture in general - puts 99.9% of current artists to shame.

  • @PhillySouth
    @PhillySouth 10 років тому +205

    The genius of James Paul McCartney which I don't people realize or appreciate fully is that he is doing two (2!) different jobs at the same time ;singing the melody and playing the bass part, which are quite, QUITE different musical things. In other words, he is walking and chewing gum at the same time, except doing something much more difficult and challenging here (and on all Beatles records). George Harrison is doing something more closely related to the melody, playing the lead guitar (on With/Meet The Beatles studio album, a Spanish classical guitar).

      Paul McCartney has not been given the credit he deserves, either as a singer or as a bassist. Everybody knows he is a great songwriter, but he`s also a great singer and musician! and i agree with you on George. George Harrison is the most underrated guitar player ever. Ringo is underrated as well. The Beatles were great musicians. They did not use session players like the Beach Boys. They did their own music. They hired musicians to do strings and trumpets, but they always played their own instruments, and they were all good musicians. John was a terrific rhythm guitar player. Ringo played great drums, George played beautiful guitar, and Paul could play every instrument you handed to him, and he played them well. His bass playing is just amazing..

    I was nearly ten when our parents turned on The Ed Sullivan Show that night in Feb 1964. The entire history of pop music changed forever that night. I bought their first album the next day and began listening later relating to how George Harrison’s “jazz guitar” playing in minors and diminished and augmented chords in this number compared to jazz albums later realizing the guitar genius Harrison was. All four of them together was like magic. They made the 1960’s a special time to experience.

    Fabulous! McCartney's Lyric Pop/Tenor voice, George's extraordinary lead guitar work, Lennon & Ringo supply a solid rhythm section.

      Agreed. I've been playing guitar for almost 40 years, and I can tell you that his solo here is excellent. The tone, phrasing, and groove are super. I like it better than the studio album version. For a 20 year old to play live with such refinement is truly amazing. The natural reverb from the hall adds a great ambiance I think.

      I would like to expound a little more on my previous thoughts. An example here is at 1:23 - 1:26. He gets the harmonics of these 6 chords to swirl with each other beautifully. Perhaps his musical instinct ( or, perhaps, genius) told him the natural reverb would be part of the blooms.
