Please for give the rough playing I,m still getting the hang of the fretless... I'll be posting a build slide show with a hundred or more photos of the process....tuning is Double C gCGCD I did not use a tailpiece in the end it muted the head...just a pin in the rim to hold the string loops....I tried 5 different sets of strings on this till I figured out it was the tailpiece causing the sound problems!!!!!

I like the imperfections more so than a perfectly made one. It looks homemade and the sound is loud. Don't change a thing...

Thanks for check it out, I definitely have a lot of respect for the mountain folks who designed and build banjos like and similar to this....they did it with hand tools on top of everything else !!!!! Lord what skills...I am bit relieved that it actually rings a bit....I was wonder if it would make out alive!!!! all the best cj

I had one instrument do a sitar buzz on one fret. I wish I knew why it did that, because I want the rest of them to do it, too.

Great job CJ! I love the style of those mountain banjos! Packs quite a punch for such a small head, i agree about the sitar "buzz" it suits the instrument and with the fret less fingerboard you can play a mountain raga! :)

Yes I had watched a Richie Stearns interview where explains his techniques or some of them, then lost it, searched wildly for it, thanks for his mentioning his name I had forgot it....I just did a search and went right too it!!! THanks much!!!! cj
Can you show us how to build one? I couldn't find the plans bluestemstrings. They aint no videos on step by step instructions.
This video is five years old, and bluestemstrings dot com takes you to a generic site, but you can still find the original site on the Internet Archive Wayback Machine (I can't post the link here, but maybe I can send it to you in a message, or you can find it for yourself on the Wayback Machine site -- go back to 2011 or so).
After that, check out the archived 18 page discussion on Banjo Hangout (search for "the amazing Mountain Banjo").
I'm just about done with my first one of these, and learned a lot from the discussion and the plans. Also check out Firefox 3 (it's mentioned many times in the BHO discussion).
Thank you, I`ll check the WBM site. I got the Firefox 3 book now from the library and a lot of good ideas in there. The chapter on Simmie Free is great too. Cant get it out of my head to build one of these. I aint got no tools but a rusty old hand saw, ax, hammer and screwdriver. I might try to make it out of plywood first to see if it works. I don't want to use a skin head though. Feel bad for the Animals. But maybe I can staple on a fiberskyn head instead. Thanks and nice job on this here banjer! She sure sounds nice! Great sustain!

Oh yeah you can tell that neck really sounds right.... Walnut worked in another guy's neck too. I'm surprised because it's so dense.
Walnut does not get enough credit as a tonewood, the new Taylor 110's are laminate walnut back and sides...

What do you use for the tension hoop? (The ring under the skin)
Matt Stroud .. I used a piece of sheet copper...folded the edge over so as not to tear the skin...
Why do Appalachian banjo players always strike the strings over the neck instead of over the head?
It gives you a different tone... more subtle i think
