In the middle 70s this steel door was solid and impenetrable. The padlock on it was in good condition, and, unbelievably, covered in grease. I always wondered what was behind it, now I know.
I would guess that the materials to build it would be brought in to the bay via boat. Then a staircase built to haul it up. I visited the spot light twice last year but didn't get a chance to go in this opening. Did you see the big grove in the cliff towards at Margrets? Made by smugglers pulling loot up the cliff apparently. Great vid
This is fantastic Iks! I'm suprised you aren't up there with Vice and national geographic, your stuff should be getting more than a few thousand views!
Wow very interesting i can see why he didn't want to move. Who wouldn't want live bye the sea. Looks like he really wanted it to be his home poor bloke 😢 great vlog keep up the good work my friend 👍
I was in my teens and living nearby at the time and remember it well. I heard that the council wasn’t impressed with him cluttering up a cave and they arranged for the poor chap to be taken to St Augustine’s, the mental facility in Chartham. He apparently hated being indoors and died soon after. I understand he wasn’t mental at all, but they didn’t know what else to do with him and he spoke no English. Sad story, and it’s a pity the council couldn’t have turned a blind eye and left him alone, once they established he was ok. At that time, St Augustine’s was a dreadful place where trying to cure mental illness involved savage electric shock ‘treatment’ which, if you weren’t suffering mentally before, ensured you soon would. It was barbaric. My Granddad was taken there from the main normal hospital when the doctors decided he didn’t have all his mental ability. He didn’t survive at St Augustine’s long either.
I always liked this video, as it's subject matter is so odd. Is the cave still accessible, or have further cliff falls sealed it off? If still accessible, it might be interesting to lower a GoPro down the shaft to see how far it actually goes, and if anything interesting is still there. Nice one. Good to see it again.
Thought it was kenny everett goes exploring lol.I agree with other comments Ian looks well young,Perhaps he couldn't get served in pubs for looking so young hence grew the beard out lol 😉👍
STU Stuart . 2013 who would go to such lengths to build a wooden floor in a place like that . and why was it tiled . if you ask me the government must have used the cave for something . long ago when it had a steel door it was used for something . Its not exactly hidden and people would have known about it so would the local police and so would the government . so I don't think it was a smuggler cave .
Great story. It's a real shame you couldn't explore the base of the 20ft drop....or....maybe you wouldn't want to....it could have been their toilet. 😂
IKS Exploration Awesome. I look forward to it. Make sure you have your gum boots, waders and face mask on just in case it was his waste deposit hole. 😉

Cool place IKS, Amazing history for a wee cave :)
The tiled floor is very interesting. The polish man must have had a tough time living there.
